Textile Research Works

Hülegü Khān (r. 654–63/1256–65) established Marāgha as capital of the Īlkhānate (654–754/1256–1353) in 657/ 1259, a year after his siege and largescale destruction of Baghdad. Located 130 kilometres south of Tabriz, Iran, it became the site of an astronomical observatory directed by Nasīr al-Dīn Tusī (d. 672/1273–4), a Persian astronomer and mathematician who assembled a team of the best minds in what are today Spain, Morocco, Egypt, and Iran. The mathematical work on planetary orbits carried out there helped shape the subsequent development of sciences in Europe. Stone remains of the observatory and its equipment were identified in …

The London Game is an interactive narrative developed by students and their instructor at Lindenwood University using the Twine tool. Players take the role of a time traveler who can experience any of three scenarios based on aspects of London history and culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the Great Fire, the theatrical scene, and the struggles of poverty.

T-Aiku Tu Libru | Tiwa Language Book, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2021

T-Aiku Tu Libru | Tiwa Language Book, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

This T-aiku Tu Libru | Tiwa Language Book was put out by the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo of El Paso. I worked closely with tribal elders and an anthropological linguist from UCLA, Dr. Erin Debenport, to develop for the first time a document that formalizes and standardizes the spelling of the Southern Tigua language from its oral tradition into writing. This first edition features animals and insects. The binder will later be added on to to include more vocabulary categories such as numbers, colors, nature, community, etc. I was more than honored to lend my art direction and design to …

Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2020 Year-End Report, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2021

Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2020 Year-End Report, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I designed this Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2020 Year-End Report for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, a Puebloan Native American tribal entity located in the Ysleta section of El Paso, Texas. It is dedicated to all the frontline personnel who tirelessly worked to combat COVID-19 on the reservation and in the surrounding community. The cover features many of these heroes against the backdrop of what will be the Pueblo’s new health clinic. While under construction, the clinic is an inspiration, and its development represents the promise that the Pueblo will have the resources to protect against future health threats. The …

The Myth & Legend Of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial On The Atari 2600: The Fan’S Quick Start And Strategy Guide, Miguel Ramlatchan, William I. Ramlatchan

Distance Learning Faculty & Staff Books

As an instructional designer and technologist, my goal with this book is remarkably simple, to consolidate and create a job aid for a complex and often frustrating/misunderstood quest. Rather than hunting all over the Internet, the map, tips, and information about the game are all gathered and summarized here. Also, rather than being an obscure Easter Egg in Amazon (like an Earnest Cline/James Halliday egg, especially on the hidden Pacman arcade game), I want to make this guide easier to find. Along with the nostalgia, classic video games and the technology and applied message design behind their creation are fascinating, …

Women In British Window Display During The 1920s And 1930s, Kerry Meakin Jan 2021

Women In British Window Display During The 1920s And 1930s, Kerry Meakin

Academic Articles

This paper examines the role of women in window display in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s. Window display in 1920s Britain was very much men’s work. Even when women were encouraged by those outside the profession, they were not necessarily encouraged by those within it. In 1923 the daily press and women’s journals devoted space to the debate on window dressing as an ideal and suitable profession for women. However, the editorial of Display, the official organ of the British Association of Display Men, disagreed. Display believed that women were unsuccessful at window dressing, justified by claiming they …

Where The Glass Glows: Unpacking The Therapeutic Experiences Of Adult Students In A Community-Based Open Glass Studio During A Pandemic, Shelly A. Palmer Jan 2021

Where The Glass Glows: Unpacking The Therapeutic Experiences Of Adult Students In A Community-Based Open Glass Studio During A Pandemic, Shelly A. Palmer

Art Therapy | Electronic Master's Theses 2015 - 2021

This qualitative study used categorizing and theming analysis to learn about how adult students of stained glass and makers of stained glass in a community-based open glass studio understand their experience of working with glass during the CO VID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to acquire an understanding about how working with glass was therapeutic during a pandemic. Open-ended surveys were used to understand the experiences of glass makers (n = 11) and students in a stained-glass studio (n = 26) and their responses were thematically categorized. The findings presented illustrate that creating stained glass objects both inside …

Chalice, Madison Goff Jan 2021

Chalice, Madison Goff

Object Analysis Projects

Madison Goff, VCU Interior Design MFA 2023, selected the Chalice for the 2021 Colonialism And The Americas, Object Analysis Project.

Native Indian silversmiths were forced by Spain to forfeit their traditional silver practices and are taught by Spanish silversmiths the rules and styles of the Spanish Church. The function of the chalice was to hold the consecrated wine during communion. The chalice was created by pouring the molten silver into a cast that the artist made out of wax. The artist then utilized the technique called ‘repousse’ where he hammered from the inside of the chalice which creates a low …

A Looking Glass, Chelcey Dunham

Object Analysis Projects

Chelcey Dunham, VCU Interior Design MFA 2023, selected A Looking Glass for the 2021 Colonialism And The Americas, Object Analysis Project.

Around 1720, mahogany was imported to England and began to supersede walnut as the wood of choice for fancy furniture. The North East colonies were a good stopping point along the shipping route from Jamaica, Cuba, and Honduras. Of course, some of the mahogany remained in the North East, and that is most likely how Mr. Elliott got his supply of Mahogany for his many-looking glasses. It was most likely designed to fit on a wall between two windows, …

Senior Art Portfolios

This body of work was created for the Senior Art Capstone and exhibited in the Bush Art Center galleries in 2021. It encompasses four digital illustrations based on the elements of nature.

I’ve created a series of creatures surrounded by a correlating landscape. Each piece is based on mythology and has ties to the real world. For this series, in particular, I explored a myth that can be found across multiple cultures is that the world was formed out of four main elements; Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. Things are kept natural through the color palette and scenes, but turn …

Creative industries are industries focused on the creation and exploitation of intellectual propert, including art, fashion design, and related creative services, such as advertisement and sales. During a trip to Burkina Faso in \Nest Africa, Keri Fosse was taught by an African woman how to wrap newborns with fabric in a manner that creates a strong bond and frees the mother's hands for other tasks. Burkina Faso has a craft culture and is known for its woven cotton and the textile art of Bogolan. Bogolan is a technique original to Mali and involves the tradition of dyeing threads with bright …

"Sustainability Of Traditional Terracotta Artisan Communities In West Bengal", Laura-Harris Gascogne Jan 2021

"Sustainability Of Traditional Terracotta Artisan Communities In West Bengal", Laura-Harris Gascogne

Sabbatical Projects

Project Synopsis:

The long tradition of terracotta sculpture making survives in the state of West Bengal today, but due to several factors, it is at risk of being lost. I wish to research and document the disappearing processes and traditions being employed by terracotta artisan communities in the state and surrounding region. I believe that I will offer a parallel appreciation and intimate technical understanding of this material as a sculptor who has studied and applied terracotta within my own work. Secondly, as an academic, I have demonstrated a continuum of interest in studying and applying elements of traditional Indian …

It Is What It Is, Richard Kraft, Special Collections, Fleet Library

Artists' Books

5 volumes : chiefly color illustrations,. "On inauguration day January 20, 2017, artist Richard Kraft began issuing Donald Trump colored cards, just as a soccer referee penalizes players who transgress the rules and code of conduct. For four years, Kraft scoured the news and Trump's Twitter feed every day, notating and assigning each of Trump's transgressions a colored penalty card (at first, yellow and red, as in soccer--and then Kraft devised magenta, purple, and crimson for ever-escalating offenses). Kraft issued almost 10,000 cards to Trump, half of them in 2020. In this set of five artist's books, totaling over 1600 …

Coffee Pot, Tawny Chamberlain Jan 2021

Coffee Pot, Tawny Chamberlain

Object Analysis Projects

Tawny Chamberlain, VCU Interior Design MFA 2023, selected the Coffee Pot for the 2021 Colonialism And The Americas, Object Analysis Project.

Entertaining in the home was also important and high society wished to emulate silver tableware from London in particular. Only the affluent could afford silver coffee pots and their elite status would have been marked by how many pieces they used to serve their guests. Tea and coffee rituals were also associated with elite femininity, as depicted by two Boston women in the painting to the right (Jamieson, 2001). We can imagine their parlor had elegantly framed mirrors and …

Candlestick, Caitlin Mclean Jan 2021

Candlestick, Caitlin Mclean

Object Analysis Projects

Caitlin McLean, VCU Interior Design MFA 2023, selected the Candlestick for the 2021 Colonialism And The Americas, Object Analysis Project.

Candlesticks were a physical representation of wealth and status, so it’s very likely these were regularly kept on display during meals or in the bedroom. Candles themselves were expensive - given the prosperity of the Schuylers [owners], it’s probable that these were used fairly regularly, as they could afford to maintain a supply of candles. Because they were originally made in a set of four with a snuffer stand, I believe these were made for display purposes, likely in a …
