Offerings, Diana C. Patin

LSU Master's Theses

These photographs and writing are a set of offerings, collected as part of an intensive examination of myself and my contentious relationship with self-image. I first established which traits in my personality represent me best. I landed on my fatness, my queerness, my southernness, and my penchant for caring. Then I took a deep dive into each of those four themes with the objective of uncovering both the areas of exaltation and spaces of hurt within them. The images that result are both confrontational and gentle. It is my hope that the uncompromising honesty within these offerings communicates that while …

Listening To Current Practice: Patient Involvement In The Pharmaceutical Packaging Design Process, Giana Carli Lorenzini, Annika Olsson, Andreas Larsson Sep 2021

Listening To Current Practice: Patient Involvement In The Pharmaceutical Packaging Design Process, Giana Carli Lorenzini, Annika Olsson, Andreas Larsson

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Multiple functional challenges in the use of pharmaceutical packaging reveal a great need of packaging to be designed inclusively. This study investigates patient involvement in the pharmaceutical packaging design process by analysing interview data from representatives of the pharmaceutical and packaging industry. Four main themes related to patient involvement were uncovered: patient expertise levels, patient involvement modes, factors encouraging patient involvement, and factors discouraging patient involvement. Passive patient involvement modes were found to be dominant due to regulations and a traditional perspective regarding physical testing. However, active patient involvement modes were identified, motivated by empathy and understanding of the lives …

The Role Of The Reader Is To Fallow: Responding To The Negative Reception Of Paul Verhoeven’S Film Adaptation Of Starship Troopers, Julian Meyerstrom Sep 2021

The Role Of The Reader Is To Fallow: Responding To The Negative Reception Of Paul Verhoeven’S Film Adaptation Of Starship Troopers, Julian Meyerstrom

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Robert A. Keinlein’s science fiction novel Starship Troopers (1959), and its film adaption of the same title directed by Paul Verhoeven (1997), received mixed critical reactions. Both pieces came across as supporting fascistic ideals to most critics upon release, despite the two creators opposing political and moral beliefs. Using Louise Rosenblatt's reader response theory as a framework for analyzing both the novel and film adaptation, this paper postulates the film adaptation fails to deliver an accurate critique of the novel by placing the burden of moral knowledge on the audience. Keinlein’s novel guides the reader into his moral sensibilities, whereas …

Veterans And Civilians: Bridging The Gap, Fernando Jose Torres Sep 2021

Veterans And Civilians: Bridging The Gap, Fernando Jose Torres

Masters Theses

Approximately 200,000 military service members transition each year. Of the vast array of transition tools and resources at their disposal, only a handful focus on the transferable skills with which service members transition. Of that handful, there are no readily available resources that use anything more than a basic algorithm to match military fields to civilian careers or assist the service member in identifying the type of post military career they are best suited for. After transitioning, military veterans struggle to communicate their extensible skill sets to potential civilian employers as a result of their highly specialized vocational language leading …

Piety And Cultural Identity: Research, Analysis And Treatment Of Pennsylvania-German Fraktur, Basia Nosek

Art Conservation Master's Projects

The treatment involved two Pennsylvania-German fraktur, which is a highly embellished folk art created by early German settlers in the United States. Digital imagining, visual examination, X-ray Fluorescence and Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy aided the understanding of materials present. The technical analysis of pigments combined with research allowed for a better understanding of how these objects were created, as well as helped tailor an appropriate treatment. Ultimately, due to presence of copper and iron-based pigments, Klucel G in denatured ethyl alcohol was used to provide structural integrity to the objects. Klucel G was an appropriate adhesive choice due to its aging …

Towards A Decolonial Feminist Aesthetics: Gender, Race, And Empire In Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’S Dictee, Juwon Jun Sep 2021

Towards A Decolonial Feminist Aesthetics: Gender, Race, And Empire In Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’S Dictee, Juwon Jun

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Defining revolutionary struggle as a struggle between fictions, Trinh T. Minh-ha asserts that art in revolution is a spiritual presence which widens the conception of freedom. Political struggle is constituted by clashes in differently written and conceived realities—hinged on the creation and realization of multiple liberatory fictions. Liberation then requires us to attend to creating new myths and conceptions of freedom which can free us from the current structures of domination that produce current subjects and realities. If culture is indeed an “essential element in the history of a people,” mapping decoloniality in cultural and aesthetic fields may be essential …

The Conservation And Technical Study Of An Early 20th Century Opera Coat, Heather Hodge Sep 2021

The Conservation And Technical Study Of An Early 20th Century Opera Coat, Heather Hodge

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A ca. 1925 opera coat, made by Tegler, Inc. in Buffalo, New York, was the focus of a three pronged study: a structural conservation treatment, a technical study, and research into turn of the 20th century dressmaking shops. Characterization of the many components on the coat was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography, multi-modal imaging, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Understanding the chemical and physical properties of various components on the coat aided in determining the treatment methodology as well as providing valuable historical context. Background research briefly discusses the coat’s prior owner, the dressmaking …

The Clothing Left Behind: A Collection Of Stories, Grace Coleman Sep 2021

The Clothing Left Behind: A Collection Of Stories, Grace Coleman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Beyond its material use, clothing can have powerful emotional effects such as easing grief from personal loss or serving as a memory recall aid for individuals with dementia. It was during my graduate program that I became interested in exploring the idea that clothing can be powerful beyond its aesthetic. Peter Stallybrass’s essay Worn Worlds: Clothes, Mourning and the Life of Things highlighting clothing’s ability to evoke memories and emotions was influential in setting me on my path to research clothing’s connection to memories. Whether it was embodied identity, grief, dementia, mourning rituals, or collective mourning, I was looking at …

Technical Study And Considerations For Conservation Treatment Of A Banjo Clock, Stephanie Guidera

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A banjo clock featuring reverse glass painted panels with unknown provenance was assessed for conservation treatment. Research into the aesthetics and functionality of the clock, manufacture of clocks in the early United States, patent laws, and historic clock repair was conducted to support the proposed identification of this piece as a 19th century American clock. Conservation ethics regarding functional objects were considered and previous treatments of reverse glass paintings were studied. Materials within the many elements of the clock were analyzed and extensive adhesive testing was executed to find the appropriate consolidant to stabilize the painted glass panels. Treatment …

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A copy of the 1786 edition of Ephraim Chambers’ Cylopaedia was researched and analyzed, developing an informed treatment plan. Imaging techniques and scientific analysis were used to identify materials, revealing details about the original binding structure and later repairs using manuscript waste and textile fragments. Treatment included extensive paper repair to all three volumes and the two gatherings of plates, and strengthening the abbreviated sewing structures with new sewing and spine linings. This complex treatment also involved parchment toning for rebacking material, stabilizing the previous textile repair, and replacing a missing board.

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

This original watercolor and ink painting features a cardinal with its wings spread against a blue sky. The cardinal symbolizes pivotal moments, and we as a nation find ourselves at a pivotal moment with regards to our handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The bird with its wings spread against the sky gives a vision of anticipation. These feelings of hope and anticipation mimic those that many are starting to feel as vaccine distribution has ramped up. Health workers should take a moment to acknowledge this extraordinary state that we have reached while continuing our care and following CDC guidelines. We …

Javanese literary works, especially the Panji tales, often feature human characters with animal names, such as Kuda Narawangsa, Kebo Kanigara, and Kidangwalangka. This naming phenomenon can also be found in old Javanese inscriptions. Recent studies generally concluded that such naming tradition occurred during the Kadiri-Majapahit era, and this was closely related to the banner of the army and the identity of makasirkasir. This study aims to reveal the motivation behind the naming tradition and the relationship between personal name, social status, and occupation of the person so named throughout the ancient Javanese era. This study uses Nyström’s onomastical approach, especially …
