Where Are The Women? A Feminist Field Guide To The Museum, Taylor Weaver
Where Are The Women? A Feminist Field Guide To The Museum, Taylor Weaver
Theses
Linda Nochlin’s seminal 1971 essay, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” was at the fore of the great battle cries of many feminist scholars that drew attention to the limitation’s that female artist’s face in the art world. Women have systematically been left out of the art historical narrative while their male counterparts remain at the forefront.
There are many women that are very prominently represented in museums. They are largely nude and have been represented by male artists. While I do not argue that nudity in paintings should not exist, I do insist that museum goers become …

Bonded By Nature: The Prevalence Of Landscape Subjects Within Abstract Expressionism And Their Sources In American Art, Aileen F. Marcantonio
Theses and Dissertations
Landscape subjects reappear throughout Abstract Expressionism. Although it is often overlooked, landscapes were perhaps a natural subject for a group of artists that were known to work from their environment. When we focus on the landscape subjects, we gain a better understanding of Abstract Expressionism and its place within the canon of American art.

While the internet has great potential to bring people together, if the internet was a country, it would be the 7th largest energy consumer on the planet. This is set to increase in years to come moving the internet even higher on this list to become the 4th largest energy consumer if it were to be a country. So, as artists and digital citizens it is imperative that we understand how to create and display the content we produce online in ways that are sustainable and accessible.

Game-Based Learning: Building Competence In Visual Literacy Through Simulation, Carol Record
Game-Based Learning: Building Competence In Visual Literacy Through Simulation, Carol Record
Theses
Game-based learning is an ideal experiential learning framework for introducing the critique process to reduce student anxiety and create competence in visual literacy and self-assessment. Critique, the assessment, and analysis of one’s work is an essential step in any creative process. It is an integral part of art school. However, it can also be a source of high anxiety for new students. This paper discusses the importance of critique, the challenges associated with teaching critique, and the benefits of utilizing game-based learning. Examples of game-based learning solutions are explored, including the development of, and response to, Lumen, a card game …

Studying for board exams can be a rewarding but taxing process. There will always be more books to read, questions to do, and flashcards to memorize. I think every medical student remembers that moment of internal reflection, where they had to set realistic expectations that wouldn’t compromise their physical and mental health.
This drawing is a personal reminder that when we neglect other areas in our lives, we compromise the the balance needed to succeed. Thus, making time for yourself is not a sign of weakness, but rather an understanding of how to achieve sustainable progress during this medical journey.

"The book “Striking Chords: music in ukiyo-e prints” is a student version of a scholarly catalog that accompanies the RISD Museum’s ukiyo-e prints exhibition of the same title. ... This exhibition is a culmination of an ukiyo-e art history course taught at RISD in the fall of 2021. The project was generously accommodated by the RISD Museum. With the help of Wai Yee Chiong, Associate Curator of Asian Art, fifteen prints were selected from the collection of the RISD Museum. For the exhibition’s online component, which is still under construction, additional prints were chosen – two more from the RISD …

There is a narrative encoded in carpets of Morocco, and I set out with the initial intention to learn how to “read” them—thinking that a Western sense of language is present from the symbols and patterns in the rug. As I progressed in my research and met the skilled women artisans, I realized that I needed to rethink how a story that doesn’t necessarily require a written format can be told to relate to these cultural totems of Morocco. Through in-person experience and online research, I discovered many designs and backgrounds unique to specific regions and areas. Rugs can tell …

Young Adult Book Cover Design And Its Impact On Reader Interest, Megan A. Mccullough
Young Adult Book Cover Design And Its Impact On Reader Interest, Megan A. Mccullough
Selected Honors Theses
A book cover is one of the first steps in selling a book and is vital in catching a reader’s attention. Still, many book covers in the young adult fiction market are ineffective at reaching their target audience. Since the birth of young adult books, cover design styles have changed drastically, yet little research has been done. Because of this lack of research, two new surveys were built to investigate what specific elements and styles of current young adult book covers appeal to readers. One survey was for readers, and one survey was for professionals working in the publishing industry. …
The Role Of Infrastructure Capital And Financial Efficiency On Economic Growth And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Mercy Ogutu Otieno
The Role Of Infrastructure Capital And Financial Efficiency On Economic Growth And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Mercy Ogutu Otieno
Dissertations (1934 -)
Sub-Saharan Africa has historically experienced low economic growth and development. Countries in this region either have no financial markets and intermediaries, or they are underdeveloped and inefficient. Furthermore, the region has poor infrastructure that is unreliable and unmaintained, thus continuing to hinder countries in this region from achieving their full economic potential. While a sizable empirical literature dealing with the economic performance of Sub-Saharan countries exists, it suffers from several shortcomings. Most of the literature treats growth as development, thus not providing a clear distinction between the two. On the other hand, those that do, fail to consider the interplay …

A New Design Thinking Model Based On Bloom’S Taxonomy, Fan Wu, Yang Cheng Lin, Peng Lu
A New Design Thinking Model Based On Bloom’S Taxonomy, Fan Wu, Yang Cheng Lin, Peng Lu
Learn X Design Conference Series
A superior design thinking model can improve the quality of design education. In recent years, universities and design institutions already proposed many design thinking models around the world. Existing well-known design thinking models focus on cultivating students' creative thinking but ignore the product's inherent characteristics and users' demands. This paper proposes a step-by-step design thinking model based on Bloom's taxonomy, which is divided into lower-level and higher-level considerations. The lower-level consideration includes remembering, understanding, and applying, and the higher-level consideration includes analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The former integrates the function analysis method, form restriction method, and EGM to help students …

Play Probes: Understanding Young People Through Playful Expressions, Line Christiansen, Sune Gudiksen
Learn X Design Conference Series
Understanding young people can be a difficult matter when one is past that age. Stories of misunderstandings stemming from generational divides are ubiquitous. A virus, such as Covid-19, threatens to create a deeper generational divide and possibly lead to the problem reaching a magnitude not seen before. This paper investigates how probes with play triggers can yield a deeper understanding of today’s youth. By analyzing the outcome of 54 youth-created play probes, clustered themes were identified, and the selected ones have been presented in detail. The prelimi-nary conclusions indicate that the play probes allow access to insights about young people …
Co-Creating A Cross-Material Silk And Porcelain Art Exhibition, Anne Solberg, Ellen Baskår
Co-Creating A Cross-Material Silk And Porcelain Art Exhibition, Anne Solberg, Ellen Baskår
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper resides in the field of artistic research and material-based art. The research issue is the co-creation of an art exhibition by two artist-researchers working with diametrically different materials. The research project is structured as a duo-ethnographic approach, with the voice of each participant present. Text and images are intertwined in the paper, both necessary for the communication of the project as a visual and material enterprise. Theoretical perspectives are the dialogue as a poly-vocal enterprise, embodied making and learning, and the role of materials in the art-making. The communication throughout the project was not vocal only, but visual …

“Changing paradigma” can be defined as a sudden outbreak in the accepted social norm, a fundamental change in the way of thinking and a change of paradigm. Society and culture are two strongly intertwined realities. Every society is, therefore, the bearer of its own legacy and contagious. Today’s Cultural and Creative Industries’ education market is facing a rapidly mutating academic scenario. The revolutionary change of the society and the increasingly sense of Cultural and disciplinary “contagious” request our universities to rethink their philosophies towards critical and creative education. In what ways is the industry’s uncertain future challenging the traditional pedagogy? …

Nordic Life Design: A Holistic Design Approach And Attitude To Life, Kirsten Bonde Sorensen
Learn X Design Conference Series
When discussing future education, we tend to focus discussions on defining future competen-cies on preparing students for an ever-changing labour market with job titles we cannot yet imag-ine. However, we often fail to recognise that our students, for years, have faced an extremely high degree of mental challenges, which indicates a need not only for new initiatives, but for rad-ical transformations in education: initiatives that represent a humanistic and holistic view, com-bining a broad focus on education, including new knowledge, with a clear focus on students' well-being, and vitality. This paper describes Nordic life design, a learning concept rooted in …
Track 02: Empowering Critical Design Literacy, Eva Lutnæs
Track 02: Empowering Critical Design Literacy, Eva Lutnæs
Learn X Design Conference Series
In track 02, we invited design researchers and educators to explore, and crack open critical design literacy as a subset of design literacy. At the core of critical design... literacy, we suggested the ability to connect to real-world dilemmas with empathy, reject destructive products of human creativity and focus on problems that are worth solving. The main concern of the track is the exploration of current educational practices, academic discourses and implications of design education empowering for critical design literacy at a specific level of education or across levels (kindergarten to PhD).
