Gender Roles Presented In Children's Literature: A Random Selection And Analysis Of Non-Award Winning Books, Renae M. Poarch

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender role stereotyping that occurs in children's non-award winning literature. This vast selection of non-award winning books has been neglected by researchers when selecting a sample to study. Past research has concentrated on the Caldecott and Newbery Award Winning books, which are not the majority of those owned by public libraries, hence not the majority being read by young readers. The purpose of this study was not to provide a list of appropriate reading material for parents and educators to select from, but rather provide an awareness of the issues so …

The Old Man and The Sea leads to a reading of The Epistle of James through Ernest Hemingway's deep understanding of Spanish Catholicism and Cuban culture; Hemingway's greatest work, it is his cante jondo, his "deep song" in homage to the suffering of his generation. Cante jondo, like The Old Man and The Sea, moves at a ballad tempo, speaks to life and death struggles, and embraces sorrow and joy in equal measure. Cante jondo, similarly, casts a mournful tone in its flamenco rhythms not unlike that Hemingway reveals in The Old Man and The Sea. What Flamenco …

The big sky of the American West has the striking effect of focusing the viewer’s attention on both land and sky. On America’s Great Plains and High Desert, the sky dominates, forcing the eye away from the traditional Judeo-Christian vertical orientation and toward the horizon, generating a remarkable sense of balance. American Western narrative carries this story of balance and possibility. The Westerner finds himself accepting the landscape, indeed drawing upon it for physical and spiritual sustenance. Since the Civil War white male writers of the American South have created fond fictions about childhood friendships that crossed the color line. For example, much of the poignancy of Faulkner's The Unvanquished (1938) comes from Bayard Sartoris's description of the close relationship he had with a black servant boy Ringo in the Mississippi small town that will separate them as they grow older and that from the beginning marked them as different, based on race.
