Intergenerational Spanish Transmission In El Paso, Texas: Parental Perceptions Of Cost/Benefit, M. Isabel Velázquez

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This study examines the beliefs held by a group of adult Spanish-English bilinguals from El Paso, Texas, regarding the vitality of Spanish in their community and the ways in which their own experience of being bilingual on the US-Mexico border has influenced their perceptions of the benefits and costs of fostering Spanish development in their children. Results show that parents’ positive attitudes toward Spanish did not translate into the investment of time and resources to foster Spanish development in their children nor, ultimately, into the use of Spanish by their children. Over 33 million people around the world are infected with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS. Of that number, over a million people are infected with AIDS in the United States. At first, AIDS in the United States was considered a white gay man’s disease. In fact, AIDS was once referred to as “The Gay Plague” (Shilts, 1987, p. 352). However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in 2005 that women now make up 26 percent of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. African American women are infected at even higher rates than women of other racial and ethnic groups. …

Richard P. McCormick, John T. Cunningham, and Roger H. McDonough are often spoken of together as having a remarkable impact on the field of New Jersey history. Exploring that narrative demonstrated that the story was much more complicated than that. McCormick had a great gift for gathering allies. The most prominent of his allies, when dealing with public history, were Cunningham and McDonough, for very different reasons. Philosemitism And Christian Hebraism In The Reformation Era (1500-1620), Stephen G. Burnett

Jonathan Israel argues in his seminal work European Jewry in the Age of Mercantilism (1985) that the early modern period marked a distinctive phase in the historical experience and consciousness of the Jews of Western Europe. He contends that the key factor that paved the way for these changes was the "political and spiritual upheaval which engulfed European culture as a whole by the end of the sixteenth century", above all what he terms the "Catholic-Protestant deadlock". The Protestant Reformation, which began in Wittenberg but quickly divided into several competing forms of Protestantism, evoked a Catholic Reformation in response. Polemicists …

The Quest And Reconstruction Of Identity In Haruki Murakami's Kafka On The Shore, Kanya Wattanagun, Suradech Chotiudompant

This essay aims to explore the issue of identity quest of various characters in Haruki Murakami's "Kafka on the Shore." While Hoshino is portrayed as an alienated city-dweller, whose identity formation depends on superficial signs produced in consumer society, Satoru Nakata's identity is noted for its marginalized position as he is unable to make sense of capitalist logic. His viewpoint reveals a hidden side of capitalist society that glorifies such superficial consumption of empty signs in the process of identity construction. Strategies Used In Taking A Computer-Based Speaking Test: A Retrospective Verbal Protocol Study, Sutthirak Sapsirin, Kanchana Prapphal, Lyle F. Bachman

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study investigated the strategies used by examinees when performing a computer- based speaking test. The data were collected from nine university students through a retrospective interview. The results showed that the examinees used several strategies, ranging from goal setting, assessment, planning to communication strategies. These strategies seemed to be associated with the constructs the CBST aimed to measure. It can be concluded that the findings provide evidence that supports the validity of the CBST score interpretations.

By exploring Confucius' attitude towards time, change, and transformation in the "Analects", this paper aims to illustrate that temporality plays a crucial role in Confucian ethics. Confucius uses the notion of timeliness as an ethical guide in self-cultivation and moral practice in order to harmonize human beings with all the events of change. This paper argues that timely sagehood is a key quality of the junzi or "excellent person." To be a timely sage, a junzi must cultivate the virtue of yi. The Polysemy Of "Chɔ̂Ɔp" In Thai: A Pragmatically Motivated Phenomenon, Kandaporn Jaroenkitboworn

This paper analyzes the word chɔ̂ɔp in Thai, which normally signifies three different meanings, namely 'to be right', 'to like' and 'often'. The result of the analysis shows that it is more likely that the polysemy of chɔ̂ɔp arises from pragmatic motivation. Pragmatic motivation, which covers factors such as speakers' attitude, intention, point of view, behavior and social standing, can affect actual use of language. Pragmatically, the word chɔ̂ɔp that means 'to be right' can easily lead to an action of agreement. In other words, when we regard something right; we tend to agree on it without argument. This study is intended to analyze and describe the relationship between the quality of spirituality and the quality of sustainability through the study of residential community developments in the real estate sector. Based on integral theories, this study explores three communities globally and three communities in Thailand. According to the data, gained mainly from in-depth interviews, questionnaires and observation, the findings show that an integral transformation towards a higher degree of sustainability has occurred, which embraces a spiritual, behavioral, cultural, social and environmental dimension. This paper describes a GIS-based application to illustrate the maps of tourist attractions and ethnic groups of Nan Province in Thailand under a research project funded by the Thailand Research Fund (TRF). Various distribution patterns of languages and settlements of ethnic groups within Nan are mapped according to the collected village data. A questionnaire was designed to collect information from 902 villages. The questionnaire included questions about village background and environment, interesting cultural elements, village names, village history, local tourist places and schools, population, ethnic groups and languages. This study analyzes the tonal variation of Lue dialects spoken in Thailand. These dialects are classified into groups based on structural differences in their tonal systems, and this classification then forms the basis for a linguistic map of Thailand's Lue dialects. The data were collected from 45 villages in 7 provinces in the northern part of Thailand. Three informants were selected to represent each village, for a total of 135 informants participating in this research. William J.Gedney's (1972) wordlist was used to elicit tonal data. Syntactic Patterns Of Zhuang Idioms, Somsonge Burusphat, Qin Xiaohang

This paper describes idioms of the northern Zhuang language. Zhuang idioms are analyzed into two major types, based on syntactic structure: trisyllabic idioms and polysyllabic idioms. Tri-syllabic idioms are short, fixed common expressions consisting of a single predicate. The polysyllabic idioms comprise tetrasyllabic idioms, pentasyllabic idioms, hexasyllabic idioms, and heptasyllabic idioms. The polysyllabic idioms display four syntactic patterns, i.e., serial pattern, causative pattern, topicalized pattern, and condensed pattern. Semantically, the meanings of Zhuang idioms are not the sum of their component part but must be metaphorically interpreted as a whole. Global Imaginaries And Global Capital: Lawrence Chua's Gold By The Inch And Spaces Of Global Belonging, Christopher Patterson

The unnamed narrator in Lawrence Chua's novel Gold by the Inch is multiply queered. He appears to the reader as a gay Thai/Malay migrant of Chinese descent living in the United States. As a traveler, his encounters with episodes of sexual desire lead him to different notions of belonging as his race, class, and sexuality travel with him, marking him as an outsider from one space to another. Likewise, every instance of mobility challenges his identity, allowing him to bear witness to unique forms of structural violence relative to whichever locality he happens to be in. Books are indispensable to lawyers and judges, containing as they do the official record of the laws that define rights, liberties, and behavior, as well as the accumulated wisdom with which those laws have been interpreted. Law books were particularly important during the formative years of the American nation, from its founding until the Civil War, as the young federal government and each state developed its unique legal literature.
