In modern times, where life is permanently accelerating, people loose natural sense for matter as well as their inherent awareness of the environment. Looking back in the history of products, we now acknowledge that the designed did not replace the crafted in all its sensitive and semiotic dimensions. Craft stands for authenticity, skill and tradition – things we naturally rely on – at the same time it's built on human- to-human relations. On the contrary, the industrial lacks the social engagement, the cultural recognition and the “human touch”.

What role do materials play in the communication of information in a public space? In this article we look at a metro station in Oslo and focus on how and where messages, such as posters, graffiti, and commercial advertisements, are connected to the station’s surfaces. How to understand this relationship between materials, surfaces, and messages? In a discussion of representational and ecological perspectives on the properties of materials, we propose to understand the station as a zone of entanglement. Symbiots set out to examine values such as ease-of-use, comfort, and rationality assumed within conventions of ‘good design’, in order to expose issues related to energy consumption and current human- (versus eco-) centered design paradigms. Exploring re-interpretations of graphical patterns, architectural configura- tions and electrical infrastructure typical in Swedish cities, Symbiots takes the form of a photo series in the genre of contemporary hy- per-real art photography. Painting a vivid pic- ture of alternatives to current local priorities around energy consumption, the three design concepts depicted are strangely familiar, al- ternatively humorous and sinister.

Objects serve mundane needs in many capacities in everyday life: “This is what gives them their ‘soul’...” (Baudrillard, J. 1986). The contexts in which objects are used give many insights on how people live. This article considers a theory of play to comment on user interaction with types of objects that cannot be ‘consumed’. Haptic hedonism is about producing sensual enjoyment through corporal stimulation. Haptic here referes to the sense of touch in all its forms, including proprioception and kinaesthesia, but in particular the cutaneous sensations of tactile pressure (mechanoreceptors) (Paterson 2007: ix). The context of art, design and technology frames this investigation on how corporal pleasures can become an integral part of interactive experiences. This explorative article presents theoretical and methodological implications of User Centered Design (UCD) from a perspective of socio material-relations and a theory of performative artifacts. The process of “asking users” is rarely treated as a design artifact that can be interrogated in and of itself. The article introduces a perspective on UCD as a “material-relational activity”. Thus, through the lens of a failed workshop, the article takes a closer look at the shaping properties artifacts, and how artifacts interact and produce results.

It claims that this to a large degree is done today by “add-on” technology, e.g. sound environment is modified with specialized dampening materials, and climatic issues are addressed with increasingly complex and energy consuming ventilation systems. There seems to be a Catch-22 involved in designing interaction; it’s very hard to do it without designing an artifact too. How can we keep our main focus away from purpose, function, form and material in order to put interaction first? We present and discuss the concept of peepholes as a means for creating engaging interactions. By peepholes, we refer to aspects of interactive artifacts and environments that utilize the tension between what is hidden and what is revealed to foster engagement. In this article, I will discuss several cases in order to explore how technological artifacts engage and are engaged in larger sociotechnical arrangements. I will show how they inscribe a certain relationship between users and designers and a certain level of engagement. At the same time, I intend to show how these relationship and levels of engagement are not intrinsic characters of artifacts per se but rather they are effects that are produced and reproduced within socio-technical assemblages. Social media are now an integrated part of culture and digitally mediated social activities. Screen-based devices now employ sophisticated graphics including visual movement on a variety of platforms. This article explores how visually dynamic interfaces can enhance social media applications. A socio-cultural view on communication and interaction design is combined with a practice-based research approach incorporating design production with textual analysis. The term social navimation is introduced and applied in the analysis of multimodal interfaces. A set of semiotic resources are identified that should be of interest for the practice and theory of dynamic interfaces and interaction design.
