Using Blogs To Engage Students In Meaningful Thinking And Discussion, Jon Ostenson

The Utah English Journal

As an English teacher, I want my students to engage in meaningful thinking about the issues in the literature we explore. Discussion is a valuable way to encourage this engagement, especially as I push discussions beyond the teacher-led, traditional IRE (teacher initiation, student response, teacher evaluation) format (Cazden, 2001). As I try to encourage discussions where students ask more of the questions and listen and respond to—and even critique—each other’s ideas, I believe that we come closer to achieving more meaningful thinking. However, I still find classroom discussions to be one of the more challenging aspects of my job.

This paper discusses the Zimbabwe situation through a study of contemporary writing from that country. Using the philosophy of sovereignty that has been passed down from Hegel to Bataille, I examine how contemporary African subjectivity is formed in conditions of political violence and economic flux. Following on from this, I make use of Agamben’s work on biopolitics, to suggest ways in which the wounded body can be approached and appraised through the written word.

The Visual Experience Of Image Metaphor: Cognitive Insights Into Imagist Figures, Daniel W. Gleason

In this essay I investigate how image metaphors – metaphors that link one concrete object to another, such as “her spread hand was a starfish” – promote visualization in the reader. Focusing on image metaphors in Imagist poetry, I assert that the two terms (e.g., the hand and the starfish) of many of these metaphors are similar in shape, and that this “structural correspondence” encourages the reader to visualize those metaphors. Readers may spontaneously form a “visual template,” a schematic middle ground that mediates between those similar shapes, in order to smoothly move between the two images within each metaphor. …

Based on Chen’s harmony theory of Chinese communication, this entry explicated that the ability to reach a harmonious state of human relationship is the main criterion the Chinese use to evaluate communication competence. In order to achieve harmony interactants are required to follow three principles: (1) intrinsically to internalize jen (humanism), yi (righteousness), and li (rite); (2) extrinsically to accommodate shih (temporal contingencies), wei (spatial contingencies), and ji (the first imperceptible beginning of movement); and (3) strategically to exercise guanxi (inter-relation), mientz (face), and power in the behavioral level.

Online Theological Education: Perspectives From First-Generation Asian Americans, Roger S. Nam

This essay explores the use of online asynchronous discussions from the perspective of first-generation Asian American seminarians. The pedagogical paradigm implicit in these online forums assumes values that compete and even contradict the values these students bring from their native educational experiences. Combined with the language difficulties, asynchronous discussions can present a serious challenge to the educational goals of both the institution and the student. Despite these barriers, first-generation Asian American students often see the incorporation of the asynchronous discussions as a welcome enhancement to their theological education.

I am a ceramic vessel maker who has developed a passion for the aesthetic, historical and technical aspects of ceramics, merging the three in my work. These are objects that ask one to slow down, and to notice the subtleties of form, surface, and function. My intention is for these vessels to be used mindfully.
