Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels Mar 2009

Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I evaluate the ways in which newspaper articles constructed the gendered cultural and personal narratives of a woman Presidential and a woman Vice-Presidential candidate during the 2008 Presidential Election season. Drawing upon West and Zimmerman's "Doing Gender" (1987) that explains gender is performed constantly throughout life, I assess the stories told about each candidate and the way she performed gender. There are two different types of stories created. The first is a personal narrative which tells the story of each individual candidate, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. The second is a cultural narrative which tells the story of a dis-embodied …

Meltwater And Abrupt Climate Change During The Last Deglaciation: A Gulf Of Mexico Perspective, Clare C. Williams Mar 2009

Meltwater And Abrupt Climate Change During The Last Deglaciation: A Gulf Of Mexico Perspective, Clare C. Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During the last deglaciation, Greenland ice core records exhibit multiple, high frequency climate events including the Oldest Dryas, Bølling-Allerød and Younger Dryas, which may be linked to meltwater routing of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS). Previous studies show episodic meltwater input, via the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) several thousand years before the onset of the Younger Dryas until ~13.0 kcal (thousand calendar) yrs, when meltwater may have switched to an eastern spillway, reducing thermohaline circulation (THC). Data from laminated Orca Basin in the GOM, constrained by 34 Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) 14C dates, provide the …

Time For The Us To Get Serious In The Wbc, Richard C. Crepeau Mar 2009

Time For The Us To Get Serious In The Wbc, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In case you haven't heard, and apparently many in the United States have not, Japan is the World Champion of Baseball for the second time running. No, they did not win the World Series, they won the World Baseball Classic, and for the second time in as many tries the United States did not make it to the finals. If this were basketball the outcry in the United States would be deafening. In fact, there is no outcry.

Leaching Of Active Ingredients From Blueberries And Cranberries Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Ethanol As An Entrainer And Analyzing Using Gc/Ms, Nada H. Elsayed

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Routine consumption of blueberries and cranberries has been shown to have great health benefits. Blueberries have high amounts of anthocyanin content per serving. Anthocyanins are known to be powerful antioxidants and are linked to the reduction of heart disease and cancer. New research suggests that the berries may also play a role in slowing down age related diseases such as memory loss and tissue damage caused by Alzheimer's. In addition the berries have a variety of essential vitamins and minerals that are important for overall health. Cranberries have long been used to treat urinary tract infections due to the high …

Study On Crash Characteristics And Injury Severity At Roadway Work Zones, Qing Wang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In USA, despite recent efforts to improve work zone safety, the number of crashes and fatalities at work zones has increased continuously over several past years. For addressing the existing safety problems, a clear understanding of the characteristics of work zone crashes is necessary. This thesis summarized a research study focusing on work zone traffic crash analysis to investigate the characteristics of work zone crashes and to identify the factors contributing to injury severity at work zones. These factors included roadway design, environmental conditions, traffic conditions and vehicle/driver features. Especially, special population groups, which divided into older, middle Age, and …

Aggression And Its Consequences In Nursing: A More Complete Story By Adding Its Social Context, Liu-Qin Yang Mar 2009

Aggression And Its Consequences In Nursing: A More Complete Story By Adding Its Social Context, Liu-Qin Yang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using a 471-case nursing sample, the current study examined the direct and indirect relationships between workplace aggression (including physical and psychological) against nurses and their health and safety consequences. Specifically, physical and psychological aggression nurses experienced were related to their job dissatisfaction, turnover intention, physical symptoms, injuries and exposure to contagious disease directly and/or indirectly through their emotional strain (irritation, anxiety, and depression). In addition, my findings demonstrated that stronger violence prevention climate (i.e., good prevention practices/response and low pressure for unsafe practices) was related to less frequent violence and psychological aggression incidents nurses experienced. Also, my results indicated significant …

Huiyuan(汇源): My “Nationalistic” Juice, Yu Zhou Mar 2009

Huiyuan(汇源): My “Nationalistic” Juice, Yu Zhou

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

On March 18, 2009, the Chinese Commerce Ministry rejected Coca-Cola’s proposal to take over Huiyuan, the top juice maker in China. This deal was a closely watched one as an early test of China’s newly instated anti-monopoly law. The veto was greeted with dismay in the major western media and widely interpreted as a new signal of Chinese protectionism. The article in the Times and the editorial by Financial Times suggested that the Chinese government made decisions based on nationalistic considerations, rather than any sound economic or legal rationale. The rejection is thought to have far-reaching ramifications for foreign investment …

Advanced Transceiver Algorithms For Ofdm(A) Systems, Hisham A. Mahmoud Mar 2009

Advanced Transceiver Algorithms For Ofdm(A) Systems, Hisham A. Mahmoud

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing advancements in the digital technology, future wireless systems are promising to support higher data rates, higher mobile speeds, and wider coverage areas, among other features. While further technological developments allow systems to support higher computational complexity, lower power consumption, and employ larger memory units, other resources remain limited. One such resource, which is of great importance to wireless systems, is the available spectrum for radio communications. To be able to support high data rate wireless applications, there is a need for larger bandwidths in the spectrum. Since the spectrum cannot be expanded, studies have been concerned with …

Performance Of Rapid Tooling Molds For Thermoformed Sockets, Jairo R. Chimento Mar 2009

Performance Of Rapid Tooling Molds For Thermoformed Sockets, Jairo R. Chimento

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Traditional prosthetic socket fabrication is a laborious and time consuming process that involves physical measurements, plaster wrapping of the stump, plaster casting for positive mold preparation, and a thermoforming process. During the mold preparation stage, significant modifications are performed subjectively based on the prosthetist's experience to transmit an optimum load to the residual limb through the socket. Rapid Prototyping techniques have advanced rapidly during the recent decades emerging as a computer aided socket design alternative which promises a potential reduction in the fabrication time, and a more systematic design approach. In addition, 3-D scanning provides accurate and fast virtual replica …

The Quasi-Uniformity Condition And Three-Dimensional Geometry Representation As It Applies To The Reproducing Kernel Element Method, Nathaniel O. Collier Mar 2009

The Quasi-Uniformity Condition And Three-Dimensional Geometry Representation As It Applies To The Reproducing Kernel Element Method, Nathaniel O. Collier

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Reproducing Kernel Element Method (RKEM) is a hybrid between finite elements and meshfree methods that provides shape functions of arbitrary order and continuity yet retains the Kronecker-delta property. To achieve these properties, the underlying mesh must meet certain regularity constraints, unique to RKEM. The aim of this dissertation is to develop a precise definition of these constraints, and a general algorithm for assessing a mesh is developed. This check is a critical step in the use of RKEM in any application.

The general checking algorithm is made more specific to apply to two-dimensional triangular meshes with circular supports and …
