Medicine As Friendship With God: Anointing The Sick As A Theological Hermeneutic, M. Therese Lysaught Apr 2009

Medicine As Friendship With God: Anointing The Sick As A Theological Hermeneutic, M. Therese Lysaught

Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A theological bioethics needs, first, a theological politics. The thesis of this essay rests on the claim that the contours of a theological politics are found in the nature of sacramental practices. More specifically, a theological politics of medicine is found in the sacramental practice of anointing of the sick. Anointing provides a radically theological hermeneutic—a theologically robust vision for interpreting medicine that, if enacted, can powerfully make real God's work in the world. Such a vision is embodied in one particular twentieth-century exemplar—the organization called Partners In Health (PIH) and its cofounder, Paul Farmer. Farmer and PIH, I argue, …

Irregulars: Guerrilla And Ranchero Warfare In South Texas And Northern Mexico During The Mexican - American War, James Mills

History Faculty Publications

The overall outcome of the Mexican - American War (1846-1848) was determined largely by regular military forces. There was, however, another war within this war waged by irregulars, guerrillas, and rancheros from Mexico, as well as by Texas Rangers and elements within the U.S. volunteers. Although these forces were important to both sides in the war effort, people most often remember them for the atrocities they committed.

"The Most Awful Problem That Any Nation Ever Undertook To Solve": Reconstruction As A Crisis In Citizenship, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Reconstruction is the step-child of the Civil War, the black hole of American history. It lacks the conflict and the personalities that make the Civil War so colorful; it also lacks the climactic feuds and battles, and dissipates into a confusing and wearisome tale of lost opportunities, squalid victories, and embarrassing defeats whose ultimate endpoint is the great American disgrace - Jim Crow. It lives with the short end of the historical stick for accomplishing too much, then accomplishing too little, with the result that almost the worst thing that can be said about someone in American history is that …

Child Of The Long Take: Alfonso Cuaron's Film Aesthetics In The Shadow Of Globalization, James N. Udden

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

Alfonso Cuaron's 2006 film, Children of Men, not only suggests that the economic pressures on contemporary Hollywood directors differ little from those in the studio era, it also suggests that film style in the age of globalization is not as homogenized as many fear. The long take is the most prominent feature in Children of Men, including many which are digitally contrived. Lofty reasons by the filmmakers are given for these long lakes, but there are more pedestrian reasons behind this. Other examples past and present suggest that often the tong take serves the needs of both filmmakers and …

Obama To Visit China Apr 2009

Obama To Visit China

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

After meeting today with Hu Jintao in advance of the G20 in London, Obama accepted an invitation to visit China later this year:

The leaders agreed to “strengthen ties at all levels” ranging from the economy to fighting terrorism, and would expand consultations on “non-proliferation and other international security topics,” the White House said.

“The two sides agreed to resume the human rights dialogue as soon as possible,” the statement said.

In January and February, China Beat ran a series of reading (and sometimes viewing) recommendations for the new president. [See installments 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.] Now …

A Referential Commentary And Lexicon To Homer, Iliad Viii [Review], Erwin F. Cook Apr 2009

A Referential Commentary And Lexicon To Homer, Iliad Viii [Review], Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

A 14,305 page Iliad commentary? That is what we get if we multiply the pages Adrian Kelly lavishes on Book 8 with the poem’s dimensions. And, Book 8? This is never really explained, though I suspect the long scholarly tradition that the book strays from Homer’s typical compositional practices and standards is one reason. For Adrian Kelly’s stated objective is to recreate at least part of the rich network of associations available to the early auditors of epic, with the result that Book 8 is shown to be as traditional as any other.

Secrecy, Textual Legitimation, And Inter-Cultural Polemics In The Book Of Daniel, Alan Lenzi Apr 2009

Secrecy, Textual Legitimation, And Inter-Cultural Polemics In The Book Of Daniel, Alan Lenzi

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

The article presents a critical examination into the Old Testament book of Daniel, questioning the role and interpretation of secrecy in the narrative. An overview of the cultural-historical context of the concept of secrecy and of the story within ancient Mesopotamian civilization is given. The centrality of secrecy to the legitimization of Daniel's authority is asserted and further implications on the concept of Biblical revelation are explored.

A Mother, A Teacher, Nancy Drew, And A U.N. Interpreter: The Aspirations Of Deborah Wiles, Amy L. Johnson, Jennifer L. Fabbi

Library Faculty Research

In an interview, Deborah Wiles, a children's book author and National Book Award finalist, discusses the new trilogy of novels she is writing based on the 1960s. Other topics discussed include balancing humor with seriousness, making connections between seemingly disconnected themes, striving to help young people make difficult choices, and honoring family in her stories.

Bewilderment And Illumination: Catch-22 And The Dark Humor Of The 1960s, Kirsten Staaby

Masters Theses

It is often hard to deal with certain subjects in a way that would not be offensive or painful. Dark humor is a popular and powerful way to deal with serious issues in a manner that is both edifying and enjoyable. In his novel Catch-22, Joseph Heller deals with the atrocities of war, and the subsequent effects it has on people and society as a whole. Heller's novel incorporates the dark humor that became popular in the 1960s, and that was used by this generation to deal with the tensions they faced in the political and cultural realms. There is …
