The Anachronistic Shrews, James J. Marino Apr 2009

The Anachronistic Shrews, James J. Marino

English Faculty Publications

A single line in the Folio text of The Taming of the Shrew seems to point to dates decades apart. A performer identified by his speech heading as 'Sinklo,' the actor John Sincklo or Sincler, recalls a stage character named 'Soto,' presumably the character from John Fletcher's Women Pleased. Sinklo's name is used to argue for an early date for the play, sometimes as early as 1592, while the allusion to Soto suggests a date around 1620. Scholars intent on setting an early date for the 1623 text and on preserving its priority to the 1594 Taming of a Shrew …

Eloquent Parrots; Mixed Language And The Examples Of Hinglish And Rekhti, Ruth Vanita Apr 2009

Eloquent Parrots; Mixed Language And The Examples Of Hinglish And Rekhti, Ruth Vanita

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

‘Hinglish’ has become the lingua franca among urban Indians today. Listen closely and you’ll hear Hindi and Urdu peppered with English words and phrases. Likewise, English sentences are spiked with Hindi or Urdu. In fact, many words that used to be well known in Hindi and Urdu have now disappeared from the vocabulary of native speakers, who have switched over to English equivalents. Ruth Vanita uncovers some of the roots of this mixed language phenomenon in the hybridised poetry of rekhti.

The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary: Profile Of A Protestant Monastic Order, George Faithful Apr 2009

The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary: Profile Of A Protestant Monastic Order, George Faithful

Collected Faculty Scholarship

It is not self-evident that there should be Protestant nuns. Yet the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary has existed in Germany for over sixty years. Why? How did the Sisterhood come to be? And what are the Sisters’ distinctive practices and beliefs? To answer these questions, I will provide a brief historical overview of the sisters’ founding, followed by a survey of the teachings of Mother Basilea, their preeminent founder, which I will augment with an analysis of the architecture of the sisters’ communities.

Buddhist Thoughts On The Battle For God: Is Fundamentalism A Good Reason To Ditch Religion?, Philip Novak Apr 2009

Buddhist Thoughts On The Battle For God: Is Fundamentalism A Good Reason To Ditch Religion?, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"Not long ago I taught a seminar on science and religion that required three fo the most widely read gospels of the so-called new atheism: Richard Dawkin's The God Delusion, Daniel Dennett's Breaking the Spell, and Sam Harris's The End of Faith. As I read along, I found the Buddhist in myself in large agreement. after all, Gotama himself had been highly skeptical of the God-idea, involving as it often did an onmipotence he could not square with either the world's suffering or his belief in human freedom." ~ from the article

Surprised By Hope: Rethinking Heaven, The Resurrection, And The Mission Of The Church, N. T. Wright, Noel B. Reynolds

BYU Studies

Many Latter-day Saints are showing an increased sympathy for the writings of Anglican bishop N. T. Wright of Durham, England, and others in the Emerging Church tradition. Such LDS interest derives from the movement's emphasis on returning to basic Christian living modeled in the New Testament and adherents' willingness to back away from those churches that have systematic theologies and a seeming addiction to the discourse of power while pursuing their agendas. The Emerging Church is more of a conversation than an organization, and it crosses denominational boundaries around the world. It is characterized by a deep interest in interpreting …

William Clark Indian Diplomat, H. Bert Jenson Apr 2009

William Clark Indian Diplomat, H. Bert Jenson

English Faculty Publications

WILLIAM CLARK IS BEST KNOWN for his role in the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. Meriwether Lewis died two years after that trek-in 1808, but William Clark settled in Missouri and lived on for more than three decades, serving as Indian agent, territorial governor, and later, Superintendent of Indian Affairs at St. Louis. Post-expedition America (1806-1840) was a time when the country looked inside itself for definition, a time when starry-eyed Argonauts peered out through the misty landscape of dreams that many times cloaked fear, reality, and propriety. They looked to settlenlent in the West, where opportunities based in land …

A Case Study Of The Response Of Newsroom Managers To The Psychological Affects On Newsroom Employees Of The Coverage Of A Traumatic News Story, Adrienne S. Garvey Apr 2009

A Case Study Of The Response Of Newsroom Managers To The Psychological Affects On Newsroom Employees Of The Coverage Of A Traumatic News Story, Adrienne S. Garvey

Selected Faculty Publications

Journalists are exposed to traumatic situations every day. Some studies have been done on the lasting effects of the trauma caused by large scale events, such as 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina, but few studies have been conducted on the effects of everyday trauma, such as murder or any other violent crime. Therefore, little is done from a newsroom management standpoint to help address any psychological needs journalists may have following the coverage of a traumatic event. This study examines the Amish school shooting in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, on October 2, 2006 and the effect it had on employees in the …

Experiences Using Health Care Among Latinas In The Capital Region Of New York State, Janine M. Jurkowski, Blanca Ramos

Policy Documents

This report presents data from a quantitative study carried out in 2007 among Latino women living in Albany, Schenectady, Montgomery, and Rensselaer Counties. A community-based convenience sampling strategy was employed because of the difficulty in identifying a sample of Latinas in the Capital District region. Latinos make up a much smaller proportion, albeit growing proportion, of the population in the Capital Region compared to New York City. Unlike major cities or areas of high concentration of Latinos, there are no large regions or neighborhoods in the Capital Region known to have a concentration of Latinos. This study’s sample was recruited …
