Map Of The Folded World, John Gallaher Apr 2009

Map Of The Folded World, John Gallaher

University of Akron Press Publications

Map of the Folded World, John Gallaher's third full-length collection, examines the eros and desperation of suburban America with the precision of a cartographer's eye. But as its title suggests, it does so according to the polar opposite of convention. More concerned with subtext than narrative, often childlike in tone and propelled by the logic of innocence, Gallaher's poems don't shy away from a bottom-line sensibility: “If you can just run fast enough,” one poem offers, “no one will ever die. // Do you remember that? / And are you better now?” This is a book filled with swimming …

How "Weak" Mindreaders Inherited The Earth, Cameron Buckner, Adam Shriver, Stephen Crowley, Colin Allen Apr 2009

How "Weak" Mindreaders Inherited The Earth, Cameron Buckner, Adam Shriver, Stephen Crowley, Colin Allen

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Carruthers argues that an integrated faculty of metarepresentation evolved for mindreading and was later exapted for metacognition. A more consistent application of his approach would regard metarepresentation in mindreading with the same skeptical rigor, concluding that the "faculty" may have been entirely exapted. Given this result, the usefulness of Carruthers’ line-drawing exercise is called into question.

Zu Nietzsches Stil, Babette Babich Apr 2009

Zu Nietzsches Stil, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Time, Space, And The Question Of Heroism In Sertorius, Nina Ekstein Apr 2009

Time, Space, And The Question Of Heroism In Sertorius, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

This article examines the exceptional role Corneille gives to the dimensions of time and space in Sertorius, one of the playwright’s later tragedies. In contrast to Corneille’s general dramatic practice, in which the two dimensions are relatively neglected, here they are foregrounded and serve as a framework for Sertorius’s tragedy. His relationship to time—he is essentially a man of the past to whom the future will be denied—and to space—immobilized in Nertobridge while aching to return to Rome—restricts him and prevents forward movement in either realm. Furthermore, time and space provide a vital key for unraveling the thorny issue …

The Legalities And Realities Of Emancipation Policies In The Netherlands And Their Associated Welfare State Typologies, Leigh Ellis Apr 2009

The Legalities And Realities Of Emancipation Policies In The Netherlands And Their Associated Welfare State Typologies, Leigh Ellis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Independent Study Project (ISP) investigated how Dutch emancipation policies have affected female labor market participation in the Netherlands. The ISP focused specifically on The Working Hours Modification Act, The Childcare Act, and The Work and Care Act. The ISP explored both the legalities and realities of the emancipation policies. Additionally, Esping-Andersen’s welfare state typologies were incorporated and each emancipation policy was classified according to the welfare state typology that it best reflected. The legalities of the legislation were researched using literature and the findings of other comparative studies done on female labor market participation in the Netherlands. A qualitative …

Learning The Kora In Two Senegalese Contexts: As A Tradition Vs. As A Religion, Emily Merkert Apr 2009

Learning The Kora In Two Senegalese Contexts: As A Tradition Vs. As A Religion, Emily Merkert

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The kora, a traditional instrument rooted deeply in the culture of West Africa, was originally only played for nobility by a caste of oral historians called “griots.” In the past few decades the use of the use of the kora has broadened, and among many more modern venues, has been adapted to the Gregorian Chants of the Catholic monks at the Monastery of Keur Moussa, who have not only changed the instrument’s use but its physical makeup as well. As an artist and musician I set out to explore the methods of instruction of the instrument in the two different …

Behavioral Application In Wildlife Photography: Developing A Foundation In Ecological And Behavioral Characteristics Of The Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey (Procolobus Kirkii) As It Applies To The Development Exhibition Photography, Matthew Jorgensen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

A fundamental understanding of Zanzibar red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus kirkii) behavior can be used to increase the efficiency of a photographic expedition and to increase the impact and value of a subsequent exhibition of the photographs taken. Preliminary research on cercopithecine monkeys, as well as the individual species, was paired with animal behavior experience in the development and execution of a photographic expedition to Jozani Forest. Collected photographs were compiled, organized, analyzed and edited before final selection of twenty five pieces meant for exhibition. These shots were assessed for their aesthetic, documentary and educational quality both individually and collectively as …

Global Christian Shifts And Missional Church Movements: Linking The Postcolonial Global South With The Postmodern West, Stephen P. Lewis Apr 2009

Global Christian Shifts And Missional Church Movements: Linking The Postcolonial Global South With The Postmodern West, Stephen P. Lewis

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation engages cunent shifts in global Christianity. The problem we are studying is the movement toward the postmodern emerging church in the West and the postcolonial church emerging in the global South, in order to understand both the past failings in the relationship of the Western and Southern church and their present common context, in order to help postmodern and postcolonial churches repent of previous failures and move forward utilizing a common set of experiences and cultural conditions, so that God's people will love and work with one another as co-heirs, co-equals, and comissionaries of the Kingdom.

In order …

Gatorland: Survival Of The Fittest Among Florida’S Mid-Tier Tourist Attractions, Dorothy Mays Apr 2009

Gatorland: Survival Of The Fittest Among Florida’S Mid-Tier Tourist Attractions, Dorothy Mays

Faculty Publications

A combination of factors in mid-20th century Florida gave rise to a unique form of business: the roadside attraction. A burgeoning middle class, widespread ownership of automobiles, and the new phenomenon of the two-week vacation sent tourists to Florida by the millions. Roadside attractions shared a number of common characteristics, including their dependence on impulse visits, the undercapitalized nature of their operations, and emphasis on a unique or exciting feature. While many of these attractions flourished in the mid-20th century, a series of changes beginning with the Federal Highway Act of 1956 ushered in conditions which would drive …
