The Futures Of Books: Technologies And Forms, Cynthia N. Malone Apr 2009

The Futures Of Books: Technologies And Forms, Cynthia N. Malone

English Faculty Publications

Students often approach discussions about the future of the book with a narrow conception of “the book”: “book” means “codex.” By reading theoretical and historical studies of the book, writing critiques of artists’ books, and creating handmade books, students can examine and question their assumptions about the essential qualities of “the book.” This paper describes a sequence of assignments designed to move students toward analysis of the relationships between forms and content in a variety of printed books, artists’ books, and electronic books. Students come to understand more fully the historical reasons for the development of the codex form and …

Brain-Based Education In Music: A New Science Or Science-Fiction?, Diane C. Persellin Apr 2009

Brain-Based Education In Music: A New Science Or Science-Fiction?, Diane C. Persellin

Music Faculty Research

We can see increased interest in the brain and brain-based education everywhere. Google turns up over one million hits on “brain-based education.” Nearly every education and music education conference offers sessions that teach ways to utilize new research on the brain. Places like MIT and Stanford increasingly sponsor workshops and courses where teachers pay big bucks to attend “learning and the brain” conferences. They believe this research is substantial enough to use in classrooms.

The number of new books on brain-based education is also startling. Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks and This is Your Brain …

Animals And The Problem Of Evil In Recent Theodicies, Mark Maller Apr 2009

Animals And The Problem Of Evil In Recent Theodicies, Mark Maller

Philosophy Scholarship

This paper critically evaluates the theodicies of John Hick, Richard Swinburne and process theism regarding animal suffering and evils. The positions of Hick and Swinburne are based on false empirical assumptions, e.g., animals do not suffer. Process theism’s claim that God is not omnipotent is an unsatisfactory answer inconsistent with the traditional concept of God. These positions cannot fully explain the mass suffering and unnecessary deaths of animals throughout time. My positive position is that God’s putative love for all sentient beings does not necessarily entail that he loves every individual human and animal. Humans do not interfere with the …

The Architecture Of Solitude, Mark H. Dixon Apr 2009

The Architecture Of Solitude, Mark H. Dixon

Philosophy and Religion Faculty Scholarship

As a spiritual or meditative practice solitude implies more than mere silence or being alone. While these are perhaps indispensablecomponents, it is possible to be alone or to live in silence and nevertheless be unable to reconfigure these into genuine solitude. Solitude is also more than being in some remote or inaccessible place. Even though geographical isolation might be conducive to solitude, with rare exceptions human beings have seldom sought solitude in complete seclusion in the wilderness. The places where human beings have sought solitude have in the end been human places, human-built places. It should come as no surprise …

Emerging Identities In Colonial Tunisia: "Alliancist" And Zionist Representations In Tunis Prior To World War I, Joy A. Land Apr 2009

Emerging Identities In Colonial Tunisia: "Alliancist" And Zionist Representations In Tunis Prior To World War I, Joy A. Land

Department of History - Stamford Publications

By 1900 the Jewish community of Tunisia witnessed the emergence of new competing identities: “assimilationist” of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, termed “Alliancist,” and Zionist. Strikingly, two members of the same family in Tunis, Raymond Valensi, President of the AIU Regional Committee, and Alfred Valensi, President of the Zionist Federation, led the struggle for their separate causes. In his discussion of identity in the modern world, Homi Bhabha asks, "How do strategies of representation or empowerment come to be formulated in the competing claims of communities…where, despite shared histories of …discrimination, the exchange of values, meanings and priorities…may be profoundly antagonistic…?" …

The Impact Of Size On The Growth And Development Of A Church, Gary L. Mcintosh Apr 2009

The Impact Of Size On The Growth And Development Of A Church, Gary L. Mcintosh

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Churches operate differently depending on the size of the congregation. "Right sizing" the various ministries and processes of communicating, welcoming, training, involving, and a host of other activities is crucial for smooth operation, as well as increased growth of a church. As a church grows, it connot simply employ business as usual practices. Larger churches are not simply bigger versions of smaller churches. In reality, they are an entirely different structure that requires different operational procedures.

Introduction Winter 2009, Alan Mcmahan

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

With this issue, I have assumed the General Editorship of the Journal under the new and vigorous sponsorship of the School of Intercultural Studies at Biola University. In the spirit of the Journal’s founding, the School of Intercultural Studies, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, has long been in the business of preparing men and women to cross the barriers that prevent people from hearing the good news of the gospel of Christ. Biola’s commitment to this task insures the continuation of the Journal into the future, a future that will bring many new opportunities for expansion and impact. This edition …

Giard's compilation of these portraits of lesbian and gay writers, carefully accompanied with textual excerpts, led this coffee-table monograph to stand as a supreme example of what Giard himself describes as "the autobiography of one gay reader."

Making “Young Hamlet”, Matthew Harkins Apr 2009

Making “Young Hamlet”, Matthew Harkins

English Faculty Publications

While youth’s subordinate position in Hamlet has played a vital role within the play’s critical tradition, this tradition has not questioned the ideological processes that create “youth” as a social category—that define what youth means, whom it includes, and why. Rather than portray an archetypal contest between the young and the old or portray Hamlet’s developmental progression from youth to maturity, the play examines the production and application of these categories as political phenomena. By exposing the circumscribed logic that produces these categories, Hamlet fractures the ideological justifications for early modern constructions of youth and age.
