Immunomodulatory Effects Of Novel Therapies For Stroke, Aaron A. Hall
Immunomodulatory Effects Of Novel Therapies For Stroke, Aaron A. Hall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Each year, approximately 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke. About 610,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks (Carandang et al. 2006). Currently the only FDA approved treatment for ischemic stroke is recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (Alteplase) (Marler and Goldstein 2003). Unfortunately its use is restricted to a short, 4.5 hour, time window. Two promising therapies in the treatment of stroke at delayed timepoints are human umbilical cord blood cells (HUCBC) and the sigma receptor agonist DTG
The first series of experiments were conducted to characterize the effects of sigma receptors on various aspects of …

Tiananmen Moon: Preface, Philip J. Cunningham
Tiananmen Moon: Preface, Philip J. Cunningham
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
If getting caught up in a popular uprising in China has taught me anything, it is that the past, present and future flow together as one with ferocious intensity. Looking back now at the eventful uprising at Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989 makes it all the more clear that what happened there was shaped by things that came before; and today’s China, basking in a post-Olympic glow and new-found national strength, is still profoundly haunted by the seminal events of 1989, though the topic is strictly taboo in the media and still feared by influential people in the leadership. …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2009-04-15, Jean Vermette
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

The Contributions Of Axel Jørgensen To The Solo Trombone Repertoire Of Denmark In The Twentieth Century, Andrew H. Converse
The Contributions Of Axel Jørgensen To The Solo Trombone Repertoire Of Denmark In The Twentieth Century, Andrew H. Converse
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Axel Jørgensen is one of a few Danish composers who has contributed compositions to the solo trombone repertoire that gained an international and lasting reputation in the twentieth century. Jørgensen, like many Danish composers from the first part of the twentieth century, is often overlooked due to the imposing figure of Carl Nielsen. Jørgensen’s compositions, while not overly patriotic, give the trombonist a sense of the Danish Nationalistic Romantic style of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Jørgensen was one of the first composers to write for the emerging slide trombone idiom in Denmark at the beginning of the …
The Thematic Organization Of Spirits In Bondage, Joe R. Christopher
The Thematic Organization Of Spirits In Bondage, Joe R. Christopher
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Detailed examination of each poem in Spirits in Bondage, using the young poet’s “Matter = Nature = Satan” equation (as expressed in letters to his friend Arthur Greeves) to explore the underlying themes of Lewis’s not just pre-conversion, but pre-theism “cycle of lyrics.” The contrast between beauty and evil, irreconcilable in this stage of Lewis’s theological development, is shown to be a major concern in this work, heavily influenced by his World War I experiences. An appendix details the matter of the poems rejected and replaced before publication.
Éowyn's Grief, Brent D. Johnson
Éowyn's Grief, Brent D. Johnson
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Adds to the scholarly dialogue on Tolkien’s depiction of war-related mental trauma by examining Éowyn not as an example of post-traumatic stress disorder, but as a character suffering from, and beginning to recover from, traumatic grief. Emphasizes the role of Faramir as counselor and healer. Johnson’s experience as a military chaplain gives added strength to his observations.

Heroic Orual And The Tasks Of Psyche, Gwenyth Hood
Heroic Orual And The Tasks Of Psyche, Gwenyth Hood
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
In-depth exploration of Lewis’s Till We Have Faces, his retelling of the Psyche and Cupid myth from the viewpoint of one of Psyche’s sisters, Orual. Taking as her key the god’s admonition to Orual after she forces her sister to disobey him, “You also shall be Psyche,” Hood examines Orual’s transformations of herself and her society and the nature and meaning of the tasks she symbolically shares with her sister. An appendix details similarities and differences between the classical Latin sources and Lewis’s version.

"A Far Green Country": Tolkien, Paradise, And The End Of All Things In Medieval Literature, A. Keith Kelly, Michael Livingston
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Attempts to explain exactly what Frodo goes to when he sails from the Grey Havens. By looking at paradise, purgatory, and earthly Edens in medieval literature and theology, we gain a better understanding of the spiritual purpose of Tolkien’s “far green country” beyond the bent paths of the world. References “Pearl,” “Sir Orfeo,” mystery play cycles, and Sir John Mandeville’s Travels, among other sources.

"Two Sides Of The Same Magic": The Dialect Of Mortality And Immortality In Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn, Geoffrey Reiter
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Looks at the subtle balance of mortality and immortality in this story and how Beagle resolves their opposition though what his characters learn (or don’t learn) from experiencing both states of being. Considers not just the novel but the sequel short story “Two Hearts” and Beagle’s script for the movie of The Last Unicorn.

The Education Of A Witch: Tiffany Aching, Hermione Granger, And Gendered Magic In Discworld And Potterworld, Janet Brennan Croft
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Explores the depiction of gender in education, and how gender issues in education relate to power and agency, in two current young adult fantasy series featuring feisty heroines determined to learn all that they can: Hermione Granger in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, and Tiffany Aching, main character of three Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. Includes a brief appendix on cross-dressing in children’s literature.

Tolkien And Dogs, Just Dogs: In Metaphor And Simile, Emma Hawkins
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Examines dogs in Tolkien’s fiction; not just the actual dogs that appear in a wide range of his works, but also the use of dog-imagery in simile, metaphor, and character description, particularly the complex pattern of references and allusions Tolkien uses in the depictions of Sam, Gollum, and Wormtongue.

From Secularism Into Modified Pluralism: Comprehensive Application Of John Rawls’S Justice As Fairness Theory In Defining State And Religion Relationship, Sigit Ardianto
Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers
The task of defining the most effective state and religion relationship has been a daunting one. Courts and jurists in different parts of the world have been engaged in this chore for centuries. This paper aims to investigate the state-religion relationship conundrum and the shift from secularism to pluralism and examine modification of pluralism through comprehensive adoption of John Rawls’s justice as fairness theory. The focus of this paper will be placed on the state-religion relationship in the United States and Indonesia whilst also observing the practice in other countries.
