Jokes From The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976)
Jokes From The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976)
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
(Part One) Understanding jokes in another language is often the highest test of fluency, based as they often are on puns and insider cultural knowledge. When Guo Qitao, professor of Chinese history at University of California, Irvine, mentioned to us that he collects clever Chinese jokes, we asked if he might share a few at China Beat. Even better–he offered to translate and gloss them. The first set we offer here are of jokes from the Cultural Revolution, a period when political rhetoric and in-fighting predominated in the public sphere. Through these jokes, we see the way that Chinese people …
Eve In The Image Of Man: Feminist Concerns In Paradise Lost, Katharine Van Arsdale
Eve In The Image Of Man: Feminist Concerns In Paradise Lost, Katharine Van Arsdale
Honors Theses
John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost (1667) follows the story of creation, the transformation of Lucifer to Satan, and the eventual fall of humanity. Traditional readings of this poem that focus on Milton’s portrayals of Adam and Eve purport that the text presents an unflinchlingly misogynistic view of women. In Paradise Lost there is a definite gender hierarchy at work. This hierarchy is constructed by certain binaries that separate the world of the male from that of the female. Examples of these binaries are rampant throughout the text; men use reason, women do not. Men are strong and women are …

Fifth Wheel For Jazz Band, Ian C. Boswell
Fifth Wheel For Jazz Band, Ian C. Boswell
Music Honors Projects
Fifth Wheel is a composition written for Macalester's jazz band that uses form and extended tonality to create an emotional narrative. It contains elements of both classical and jazz traditions: its form and unusual meter (5/4) from the former and improvisation and jazz harmony from the latter. Writing harmonies in an extended tonal language was of particular importance in this piece's creation.

The Preliminary Assessment And Incidence Of Sexual Identity Issues At Liberty University, Jessica L. Buker
The Preliminary Assessment And Incidence Of Sexual Identity Issues At Liberty University, Jessica L. Buker
Senior Honors Theses
Currently, homosexual identity development is discussed through various models: stage model theory and milestone events. Different researchers propose their own models of homosexual identity development. These models may have different stages, but have the same underlying themes which are acceptance, attitude changes, frequent disclosure, and increased social contact with other homosexuals. There was a great need to develop an appropriate measure of homosexuality to be used by the Student Care Office at Liberty University. The measure could be used to asses and obtain a preliminary measure of incidence of the people who met our criteria for being included in the …

A New Perspective On The Work-Family Interface: Linking Achievement Motivation And Work-Family Balance, Tiffany N. Smith
A New Perspective On The Work-Family Interface: Linking Achievement Motivation And Work-Family Balance, Tiffany N. Smith
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify whether three achievement motivation variables (LGO, GNS, and AO) were positively related to work-family balance, and to investigate plausible interactions between these variables and work-family stressors on balance perceptions. Relationships of these variables to work-family conflict and facilitation outcomes were also analyzed in order to identify differential relationships. Data were collected from 428 individuals through a web-based survey. Results indicated that all three achievement motivation variables were clearly related favorably to work-family balance and facilitation, while only AO was negatively related to conflict. The relationships between schedule flexibility and all work-family outcomes …
A China Beat Reader: 6/4
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Over the past year-plus, China Beat has run several pieces related to the 1989 protests. For readers who may have missed them originally (or wish for a refresher), here is a short list:
1. Par Cassel, “The Gate of Heavenly Pacification” (6/18/08): “Tian’anmen is by no means a peaceful name, but a name rather fitting to a fledging empire that anxiously protected its claims to legitimacy and busied itself with suppressing rebellion and dissent wherever they showed up.”
2. “Liu Si,” looking backward and forward (6/4/08): Two lists of suggested readings, one on the events of 1989 and another on …
