On The Concept Of Evil: An Analysis Of Genocide And State Sovereignty, Jason J. Campbell
On The Concept Of Evil: An Analysis Of Genocide And State Sovereignty, Jason J. Campbell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The history of ideas and contemporary genocide studies conjointly suggests a meaningful secular conception of evil. I will show how the history of ideas supplies us with a cumulative pattern, or an eventual gestalt, of the sought-for conception of universal secular evil. This gestalt is a result of my examination of the history of ideas. The historical analysis of evil firmly grounds my research in the tradition of philosophical inquiry, where I shift the focus from the problem of evil, which is indebted to theological discourse, to an analysis of the concept of evil. Next, I show how this gestalt …

Communicating Spirituality, Dying And A “Good Death” At The End-Of-Life: The Role Of Hospice Interdisciplinary Team Members, Jillian A. Tullis Owen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hospices use interdisciplinary teams to aid patients and families as they cope with the imminence of death while helping them achieve a death free of physical and spiritual pain, also known as a good death. This study investigated the communication between hospice team members and their patients regarding spirituality, dying, death and a good death. Through 300 hours of participant observation and interviews with hospice staff at one large not-for-profit hospice in the Southeastern United States this project shows that team members understand patient's spirituality through a religious frame potentially compromising spiritual care. Talk between patients and their care …
From Cultural Traditions To National Trends: The Transition Of Domestic Mormon Architecture In Cache Valley, Utah, 1860--1915, Jami J. Van Huss
From Cultural Traditions To National Trends: The Transition Of Domestic Mormon Architecture In Cache Valley, Utah, 1860--1915, Jami J. Van Huss
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As any architectural historian would argue, historic buildings are the most accessible, yet illusive documents of their founding culture, and as the relevant historiography argues, the early Mormon pioneer built environment in Utah is no exception. In fact, many Mormon architectural historians posit that due to the exclusivity and unusual circumstances of many Mormon settlements, their original structures have an exceptional ability to comment on the culture that erected them. The first permanent settlement in Cache Valley, Wellsville, provides a particularly lucrative opportunity to discover a great deal about the founding pioneers who established it due to the city's time …
The Sweet Air, Ann Braley Smith
The Sweet Air, Ann Braley Smith
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
1. April
1986: Wind melds sky turns to rain turns to snow turns to white closes in.
A South Dakota blizzard is a shape-shifter, undulating, hiding, revealing little of what lies beneath. In its aftermath, fallen snow is delicate, ephemeral. It quells noise, erases the line between earth and sky. It envelops sound: footsteps, passing vehicle, a runaway dog, cannot shatter this silence. The tired scraping of a metal shovel against idewalk is the only thing penetrating the quiet, quiet hush, as I wade through snow in my Sorels, clearing the walk. Breathing in, I feel my nostrils sting. I …
The King And His Council, Karen I. Wadley
The King And His Council, Karen I. Wadley
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Following the Easter celebrations of AD 664, Oswiu, the Northumbrian Breatwalda, called a mixed body of representatives from the Bernician and Deirian royal households and Roman and Irish Catholic ecclesiastical leaders to convene a church council at Whitby Abbey, on the mouth of the river Esk. His intent was simple: to put to rest a fiery dispute over the day upon which Christ’s resurrection was to be observed and bring peace to his household and to Northumbria. He entrusted the defense of his own church, the Irish, to his bishop, Colman of Lindisfarne. Agilbert, bishop of the West Saxons, was …
Confronting Environmental And Social Crises: Octavia E. Butler’S Critique Of The Spiritual Roots Of Environmental Injustice In Her Parable Novels, Melissa Vargas
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
We are living in the midst of environmental and social crises. This fact was not lost on late African-American science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler, whose 1993 Parable of the Sower and 1998 Nebula Award-winning Parable of the Talents depict and critique the current environmental and social crises in the United States. Speaking of Sower in an interview with Essence magazine, Butler says that all she “did was look around at the problems we’re neglecting now and give them about 30 years to grow into full-fledged disasters” (“Brave New Worlds” 164). In another interview with Randall Kenan, Butler describes environmental …
From Screen To Page: Japanese Film As A Historical Document, 1931-1959, Olivia Umphrey
From Screen To Page: Japanese Film As A Historical Document, 1931-1959, Olivia Umphrey
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores to what degree Japanese film accurately reflects the scholarly accounts of Japanese culture and history. It analyzes how four elements of Japanese culture, loyalty, gender roles, foreigners, and the environment, are depicted on screen in films from the 1930s to the 1950s. While there are overt examples and messages regarding loyalty and gender in film, instances of foreigners and the environment are less evident, and in some cases even absent. However, just as much information can be gleaned from their absence. By measuring the scholarly accounts against the films, a conclusion can be drawn regarding the accuracy …
Traditions In Transition: Basques In America, Alissa Peterson
Traditions In Transition: Basques In America, Alissa Peterson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The Basque Museum & Cultural Center’s newest corridor exhibit, Traditions in Transition: Basques in America, is an interpretive exhibit based primarily on material culture artifacts, photographs and literature. The exhibit provides a physical and thematic transition between the museum’s entryway exhibits and the main gallery exhibit. Traditions in Transition uses six corridor cases to exhibit six topics under an overarching theme of Basque migration and expression of their ethnicity through various cultural artifacts, practices, and traditions. This pattern is common largely among European immigrant groups’ later generations. The exhibit addresses how the Basque immigrants adapted these cultural practices to their …
Conservative Conservationists: Water Rights, Wilderness, And Idahoan Political Identity, Kelly M. Orgill
Conservative Conservationists: Water Rights, Wilderness, And Idahoan Political Identity, Kelly M. Orgill
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Idahoans' unique and contradictory history of conservation politics reveals deep tensions between expectations of individual water rights, a shared regard for natural beauty, and a deep-seated fear of government intervention. From its earliest settlers to its Sagebrush Rebels to its modern day miners and lumber crews, Idaho has teemed with those eager to profit from the state’s natural resources. The post-war interest in recreation and the environmental movement of the 1970s, however, promoted concern and support for preservation in Idaho. Coupled with the Idahoan obsession with water rights, Idaho environmentalism prompted the conservative Republican state to elect environmentally-minded Democrats Cecil …
Opium Use In Victorian England: The Works Of Gaskell, Eliot, And Dickens, Jessica Rae Henderson
Opium Use In Victorian England: The Works Of Gaskell, Eliot, And Dickens, Jessica Rae Henderson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
England’s opium trade with China in the nineteenth century, often conjures up images of a powerful nation, for financial gain and heedless of the damage caused, nefariously thrusting addictive drugs on an unwitting Chinese people and unwilling Chinese government. But this image hides the English side of the story, i.e. England’s own problem with opium. The English imported thousands of pounds for domestic use each year in the 19th century, and until the late 1860s its sale was completely unrestricted. It was used as a veritable cure-all for various diseases, as well as a relief for any kind of …
Persuasiveness Of The Text: An Analysis Of Virginia Woolf's "Three Guineas", Carl William-John Linder
Persuasiveness Of The Text: An Analysis Of Virginia Woolf's "Three Guineas", Carl William-John Linder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This analysis is a consideration of the Three Guineas by Virginia Woolf and deals with her use of endnotes and citations throughout the essay-novel, and their persuasive role in regards to the text. This paper will investigate this paratextual source material and its purposeful inclusion into the work. As mnemonic components and logical evidence, the textual citations are subservient to the persuasive quality of the text and the arrangement of her argument. After separating historical elements from the rhetorical aspects of the essay-novel, the paper explores Virginia Woolf's use of Classical rhetorical strategies in constructing her argument in Three Guineas. …
Quest For Quotidian: A National Survey Of Non-Heterosexual Attitudes Toward Marriage, Troy A. Mcginnis
Quest For Quotidian: A National Survey Of Non-Heterosexual Attitudes Toward Marriage, Troy A. Mcginnis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Marriage equality remains a legal impossibility for same-sex couples in most states, and opponents are concerned that expansion of marriage to include gays and lesbians would radically redefine the institution. Findings from an online survey of lesbians, gays and bisexuals— a non-random sample of 466 adult men and women age 18 to 74 in 37 states— strongly suggest that many non-heterosexuals' attitudes reflect neither a radical departure from core definitions of marriage, nor a rejection of traditional "family values," but instead signal an assimilationist position favorable to traditional marriage norms rather than a liberationist position critical of the institution.
"Divine William" And The Master: The Influence Of Shakespeare On The Novels Of Henry James, Amy M. Green
"Divine William" And The Master: The Influence Of Shakespeare On The Novels Of Henry James, Amy M. Green
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Henry James's most sustained commentary on Shakespeare comes in the form of an introduction to an edition of The Tempest that was published in 1907. In it, he remarks that the play is a reflection of Shakespeare "consciously tasting of the first and rarest of his gifts, that of imaged creative Expression...to show him as unresistingly aware" (1207). This praise ties unerringly back to James's praise of the artist as one who views the world through open eyes and can capture the nuance of experience. James himself worked at the craft of fiction, and writes extensively in his notebooks and …
Where Is Thy Glory? Moses 1, The Nature Of Truth And The Plan Of Salvation, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap
Where Is Thy Glory? Moses 1, The Nature Of Truth And The Plan Of Salvation, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap
Faculty Publications
While the first chapter of the book of Moses is often understood as introductory to the rest of the book, the chapter itself is an inclusive text centering on Moses’s transformation through three separate encounters with supernatural beings. In each encounter he is taught something of the meaning of truth and experiences the power that the comprehension of truth brings. His example is particularly instructive in light of the doctrine that “truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come” (D&C 93:24).
The first section of Moses 1 contains Moses’s encounter …

May Fourth Movement: Top Five Readings, Rana Mitter
May Fourth Movement: Top Five Readings, Rana Mitter
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
The May Fourth Movement – so famous in China it doesn’t need a year, although 1919 – the year it happened – has become legendary too. On that date, some three thousand students marched through Beijing demonstrating against Japanese imperialism and started a political movement that would become identified with Chinese demands for “science” and “democracy” through the next century. From the Cultural Revolution to Tian’anmen Square, May Fourth echoes through China’s modern history. The Chinese Communist Party still claims the movement as its point of origin. On May 4, 2009, the movement will be ninety years old. In some …

A Conversation Among Sisters : The "Dangerous Lover" In The Texts Of The BrontëS, Jennifer K. Patchen
A Conversation Among Sisters : The "Dangerous Lover" In The Texts Of The BrontëS, Jennifer K. Patchen
Honors Theses
Since the Brontes first published their novels, critics and readers have often associated the male leads with the Byronic hero. Certainly, Arthur Huntingdon in Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Edward Rochester in Charlotte's Jane Eyre and Heathcliff in Emily's Wuthering Heights are all, like Lord Byron's own heroes, brooding and damaged men. Each of these men, additionally, is fundamentally willing to flout social expectations. Their search for selffulfillment often leads them outside of the boundaries of conventional society, although the three sisters sometimes ascribe conflicting moral values to that search. For Charlotte and Emily, Rochester's and Heathcliffs strong personalities …
Realizing Death: The Journey Of American Cinema, Elizabeth C. Urban
Realizing Death: The Journey Of American Cinema, Elizabeth C. Urban
Excellence in Research Awards
Since their inception, movies have served as the meter of popular culture, reflecting the customs, tastes and thinking of their times. As such, films provide benchmarks for the history of psychological development. A survey of American movies reveals that even though there has been a progression of psychological thought about death and dying by the medical community and a more naturalistic portrayal in our cinema, we remain a death-denying culture.

Non-Contact Characterization Of Dielectric Conduction On 4h-Sic, Helen N. Benjamin
Non-Contact Characterization Of Dielectric Conduction On 4h-Sic, Helen N. Benjamin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Consistent charge or defect control in oxide grown on silicon carbide (SiC) continues to be difficult to achieve and directly impacts the electrical performance of SiC-based metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) devices. This research applied non-contact Corona-Kelvin metrology to investigate the charge transport in oxides grown on n-type 4H-SiC epitaxial substrates. The cost and engineering science impact of this metrology are significant as device fabrication is avoided leading to quick determination of electrical characteristics from as-grown oxide films. Non-contact current-voltage (I-V) measurements of oxide on SiC were first demonstrated within this work and revealed that Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) current emission was the …
A Monster Mash(Up) With Chinese Characteristics: Breaking News From The Prc For Those Intrigued By The "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" Phenomenon
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
By the end of this post, readers will have been able to click on a word to be introduced to the sounds of “Redgrass Music” (a genre that uses Chinese instruments in a novel manner), seen the special look of a curious vehicle recently displayed in Shanghai that one journalist has said should be called a “Lexiac” ( like a Pontiac from the front, like a Lexus from behind), and discovered something important that Zhang Yimou and Jane Austen have in common (hint: surprise appearances by the undead are involved in each case). First, though, some background about “mash-ups” (aka …

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2008-2009 Season
First published as a book by Ken Kesey in 1962, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was inspired by Kesey's job as an orderly at a veteran's hospital and by the 1960s counterculture movement touting such themes as freedom, rebellion and fearlessness. It's the classic anti establishment tale of one man asserting his individuality in the face of a repressive, conformist system.
