Visual Argument Reconsidered: 'Objective' Theory And A Classical Rhetorical Approach, Daniel Richards May 2009

Visual Argument Reconsidered: 'Objective' Theory And A Classical Rhetorical Approach, Daniel Richards

All Theses

Visual argument is a relatively new discipline within the field of visual rhetorics. Consequently, visual rhetoricians have presented new theories of visual argumentation without fully considering the possibilities of existing textual methodologies as explanatory tools—especially classical rhetorical devices. This thesis presents a methodology for examining and creating visual arguments based on the concepts of topoi and figures of speech. I contend that these classical rhetorical devises embody an “objective” understanding of visual communication that shows one way of bridging the empiricism/rationalism debate in epistemology. By demonstrating that knowledge comes from the necessary interplay of perception and conception, I attempt to …

Victims And Aggressors: Black And Jewish Interethnic Relationships In Contemporary American Literature, Jessica Martin May 2009

Victims And Aggressors: Black And Jewish Interethnic Relationships In Contemporary American Literature, Jessica Martin

All Theses

Though blacks and Jews are often portrayed together in African-American and Jewish-American writing, the reasons for the juxtapositions are curious. Contemporary authors have created a close relationship between blacks and Jews that, perhaps with the exception of their cooperation during the Civil Rights movement, historically did not exist. But, the relationship between these two groups in literature offers a unique perspective on American racial and ethnic social structures because both blacks and Jews are considered minority groups, yet they also maintain a hierarchical relationship with one another. By employing black and Jewish characters, American writers, especially Jewish-American writers, create a …

The Rhetoric Of The Comment Box: Editorial Queries As Arguments And Relationships In Engineering Proposals, Ali Ferguson May 2009

The Rhetoric Of The Comment Box: Editorial Queries As Arguments And Relationships In Engineering Proposals, Ali Ferguson

All Theses

In today's academic engineering environments, securing funding has become a volatile process, requiring the hard work of and collaboration between many different people. Technical editors are one of these important forces in the proposal writing process, as they help engineer writers to develop their proposals and persuade reviewers of the value of their research. However, to date, there have been very few studies on how editors convince engineer writers to accept their proposed revisions. To fill this gap in the literature, this thesis offers an in-depth style analysis of six proposals in order to determine what technical editors do when …

The Design, Production And Analysis Of A Realistic Stereo Cg Short Film On A Six Month Budget., Celambarasan Ramasamy May 2009

The Design, Production And Analysis Of A Realistic Stereo Cg Short Film On A Six Month Budget., Celambarasan Ramasamy

All Theses

The production of stereoscopic CG films poses some interesting challenges, especially for student productions that work under the severe limitations of time and resources. This is mainly due to the non availability of off the shelf production tools catering to stereoscopic CG productions. This work presents the production process of one such student produced stereoscopic short film. The production process is described in detail starting from the initial conception of the narrative plot to the actual production of the film. Finally an experimental technique of using eye tracking as a tool for finding out the effectiveness of the various stereoscopic …

Totally Devoted: Developing A Holistic Spiritual Formation Course For Western Christian College, Stanley N. Helton

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports research results from a learning community composed of faculty, support staff, ministry leaders, and students who collaborated in a professor’s development of a new course proposal in Christian spiritual formation at Western Christian College in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The professor used qualitative research methods in the analysis and evaluation of the data produced by the group. The outcome of the project was ethnographic data that informed the creation of the course proposal that included new course application, course syllabus with course schedule, planned activities, bibliography, initial classroom assignments, and initial assessment tools.

An Epic Life: A Story Of Art, Discovery, And Adventure, Sara Silkwood May 2009

An Epic Life: A Story Of Art, Discovery, And Adventure, Sara Silkwood

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This collection of work is inspired by a series of trips I took around the state of Alaska. In the project, I combined illustration, design, page layout and various forms of storytelling.

Initially the project started with the idea that I would be creating both an artist’s journal and a separate body of artwork based around my experiences in Alaska. But the project changed and evolved the more I traveled and the more I reflected by painting, writing and designing.

While I was in Alaska, I gathered reference with photographs and sketches, planning to use them to create a book …

Jane, The Quene, Kathleen Wrinn May 2009

Jane, The Quene, Kathleen Wrinn

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

I wrote and performed a one-woman show entitled Jane, the Quene, about the life, reign, and death of Lady Jane Grey, the 9-day Queen of England in 1553. With the help of my advisor, Lauren Unbekant, I created my piece in a physical storytelling style in which I played all of the characters, adopting different voices, physicalities, and slight costume modifications to distinguish between them. I collaborated with film, costume, set, lighting, and sound designers to create my final product, and the whole project took about a year to complete. I had begun my research in London the previous …

Film Score, Jeff Peters May 2009

Film Score, Jeff Peters

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My capstone project involves creating an original musical score to an independent film. As the music is so invested in the narrative of the film, all work leading up to the actual composition of the music was on the history of film scoring and possible technical and creative methods, learned in classes on the subject. This knowledge and hands-on practice provided me with some limited experience, but this film was the first practical application of my composing skills.

My extensive background in music allowed me to perform all of the parts heard in the score. It was my job to …

Making Home – At Home And Abroad, Stasya Panova May 2009

Making Home – At Home And Abroad, Stasya Panova

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For my Capstone Project, I created a dual exhibition centering on the theme of home, in collaboration with Elody Gyekis, a Schreyer’s Honor student at Penn State University, double majoring in Painting and Ceramics. The show was entitled “Making Home: at home and abroad” and was exhibited both in State College, Pennsylvania, and in Syracuse, New York, in March 2009. The body of work was the culmination of our three-year collaboration and consisted of photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, ceramic, and video art. The making and installation of the pieces investigated the physical and emotional experience of making home, …

Crossing Borders In Leonard Bernstein’S Mass, Theresa Hubbard May 2009

Crossing Borders In Leonard Bernstein’S Mass, Theresa Hubbard

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

On September 8, 1971, Mass by Leonard Bernstein premiered at the inauguration performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C. Subtitled “A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers,” Mass possess examples of several different types of music, making the piece very eclectic in nature. It is a huge work which requires close to 200 performers who are well-versed in several musical genres.

Bernstein composed Mass using the form of the Roman Catholic Mass celebration, as many composers have done in the past. Bernstein was a bit more daring, however, and instead of composing music …

The Lovely Invader: A Documentary On Lonicera Research, Danielle S. Houghton May 2009

The Lovely Invader: A Documentary On Lonicera Research, Danielle S. Houghton

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For over a year a half, I followed Steve Maheux, a Biology major, throughout his journey to conduct a research study on honeysuckle, an invasive plant. He posed a question regarding the possibility of predicting the occurrence of an invasive plant based on certain environmental factors: soil depth, soil pH, neighboring plants and other aspects that would make up an ideal environment for this menacing plant. The focus of my documentary was to show what true research looks like in all of its tedious glory. Research isn’t fancy. It often doesn’t make for “sexy film,” but it is vital for …

Bj: A Musical Romp, Eric Jarboe May 2009

Bj: A Musical Romp, Eric Jarboe

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Through a series of rather unpredictable events, I was asked to write a piano and vocal score for an original musical. After over two years of working on the project, I am very pleased with the size and scope of the finished product, but more importantly, I feel that I actually understand the job of a musical composer. It was my misconception that a composer only writes melodies that are catchy and sound fun to sing. After researching the process of other musical composers, it became evident that my task was to simply tell a story, but through a different …

Kaidan: Fashion And Photographs Inspired By Japanese Ghost Stories, Gabrielle Hennessey May 2009

Kaidan: Fashion And Photographs Inspired By Japanese Ghost Stories, Gabrielle Hennessey

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The objective is to visually represent Japanese ghost stories, known as kaidan, not only as a supplement to the senior fashion design thesis but also as a way to explore the more general human themes of love, loss, and betrayal.

As a fashion design major, it is required to complete in full a six-piece womenswear collection to be shown at a university-wide fashion show in April of senior year. Each individual designer decides on an appropriate theme for his or her collection; this theme is finalised during the fall of senior year, with garment construction beginning immediately afterward. Additionally, …

The B Street Residence Biophilic Design And The Colorado Home, Colin E. Fanning May 2009

The B Street Residence Biophilic Design And The Colorado Home, Colin E. Fanning

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The main focus of this Capstone has been exploratory—self-educational. After having learned, during the course of my studies in interior design, about the methodology of biophilic design (literally, “life-loving”)—which deals with the human psychological affinity for the natural world and attempting to reconcile that with the built environment, in order to create spaces that protect both body and mind—I wanted to experiment within that philosophy, to build my own biophilic design skills. This matched well with my long-running passion for sustainable design—the two methodologies are distinct but closely related, and when used in concert they represent a progressive vision for …

Senior Collection And Fashion Industry Experience, Amanda Coyne May 2009

Senior Collection And Fashion Industry Experience, Amanda Coyne

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My goal upon completing my Honors Capstone Project was to explore the process I went through over the course of the year as I completed my senior collection in the Fashion Design program at the School of Visual and Performing Arts. My senior collection incorporated inspiration I gathered over the past four years to show how I have evolved as a designer. It was a unique experience in that it has allowed me to express my personal design aesthetic through my clothing.

My senior collection consists of six looks that were constructed and styled individually to be ready for two …

The Spiritual Value Of Poetic Expression, Sally Waggoner May 2009

The Spiritual Value Of Poetic Expression, Sally Waggoner

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This project explores the nature of the self’s relationship to language, particularly creative linguistic expression, and aims to illustrate the ways in which creative linguistic expression or, in other words, poetic expression, can be spiritually beneficial to the speaker, writer, reader, or listener. Of course, this could mean a variety of things. In this project, I take it to mean that poetic expression has the potential to subvert ego discourse (expression that only serves to create, reinforce, and protect the ego or self-identity).

First, in the introduction, I use Gilles Deleuze’s text, Bergsonism, along with a quotation by Paul …

Governing Boyhood In The Novels Of George Macdonald And Robert Louis Stevenson, Meredith Louise Hale May 2009

Governing Boyhood In The Novels Of George Macdonald And Robert Louis Stevenson, Meredith Louise Hale

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In a literary world in which a girl is capable of passing herself off as a man and a young boy is pleased when others tell him that he is “as good...as if [he] were a girl,” one questions what defines masculinity (MacDonald, ABNW 146). These individuals are two characters created by the Scottish novelists George MacDonald and Robert Louis Stevenson in the late 1800s. This project analyzes how novels by MacDonald and Stevenson depict boyhood and includes MacDonald’s At the Back of the North Wind (1871), The Princess and the Goblin (1872), and The Princess and Curdie (1883) as …

Spanish Language Acquisition: Gender-Marking Parameter, Marissa T.Y.O Kanemura May 2009

Spanish Language Acquisition: Gender-Marking Parameter, Marissa T.Y.O Kanemura

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This study further examines past studies that have examined the gender marking value of a parameter of variation allowed by UG in L1 and L2 speakers of French and Spanish. Child L1 French speakers were found to make few errors in assigning gender to both actual nouns and nonsense nouns. An L2 Spanish learner was found to default one gender for the definite article and another gender for the indefinite article. Adult L2 French speakers were found to display similar defaulting, to a lesser degree, perhaps attributed to experience with exceptions to patterns.

To enhance these results, I conducted a …

Religious Implications Of The Berlin Wall, Michelle Mcclafferty May 2009

Religious Implications Of The Berlin Wall, Michelle Mcclafferty

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In this paper, I take a close look at the present condition of the Jewish Community in Berlin. Being a community that, within the last century, has faced the devastation of the Holocaust and the subjugation of the Berlin Wall and accompanying Soviet regime, the Jewish community in Berlin represented, to me, one with an amazing challenge and opportunity to rebuild itself. The aim of this paper was to separate the Jewish community from other communities in Berlin, separate the presence of the Berlin Wall from other historical events, and then consider the possibility that the Wall itself has an …

Exploring Faith Communities In Syracuse, Rachel Dudley May 2009

Exploring Faith Communities In Syracuse, Rachel Dudley

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The United States of America is now the most religiously diverse country in the world. Living side by side are not only Catholics, Protestants, and Jews, but Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and people from a multitude of other religious groups as well. However, while Americans inevitably encounter religious diversity every day, very few take the time to engage in it. There is a lot of ignorance surrounding the multitude of religious traditions present in America, and this ignorance can easily lead to fear, hatred, discrimination, and violence.

The course “Exploring Faith Communities in Syracuse” tries to put a stop to this …

Becoming A Boy: Disability & Masculinity In Rodman Philbrick’S Freak The Mighty, Courtney Cohen May 2009

Becoming A Boy: Disability & Masculinity In Rodman Philbrick’S Freak The Mighty, Courtney Cohen

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My Capstone thesis is a discussion of the various representations of disability in Rodman Philbrick’s children’s book and the film it was made into. In analyzing the characters, relationships between the characters and vernacular used within the text, I came to the conclusion that certain parts of the book, including the inclusion of not one, but two characters with impairments as main characters, serve to engage the book in a complex discourse with various concepts of disability and masculinity.

In order to place Philbrick’s text within a larger discourse of disability studies, I analyze it with regard to theories of …

Disarming Affirmative Action: Why The Concept As We Know It, Cannot Solve The Racial Issue, Daniel J. Cianchetta May 2009

Disarming Affirmative Action: Why The Concept As We Know It, Cannot Solve The Racial Issue, Daniel J. Cianchetta

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The following is a study on the use of affirmative action in higher education, particularly with respect to race. Because admission into institutions of higher education has traditionally been perceived as a reflection on one’s merit, the application of race-conscious affirmative action programs has undermined the meritorious prestige of a college education for graduates of all races alike. The use of an uncontrollable trait determined at birth as a factor in gaining admission to one of these institutions raised questions of fairness, legality, and purpose. The consequences of such a policy’s application raised further questions regarding fairness, its success, and …

Blocked: Short Story Manuscript, Christopher Hazle-Cary May 2009

Blocked: Short Story Manuscript, Christopher Hazle-Cary

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Blocked is a manuscript of short stories designed to explore conceptions of selfhood as represented in the fictional story. In the manuscript, I investigate issues of performance and authority as they relate to how characters define themselves in relation to the other—both the other characters in the story as well as the socio-cultural structures they have come to inhabit.

The loss of authority is a theme that I explore throughout my work. I am interested in authority as another aspect of performance—another role that people play, a mask (or face) that they take on. It also relates directly to the …

Natural Horn Performance In The 19th Century, Paula Kinev May 2009

Natural Horn Performance In The 19th Century, Paula Kinev

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The natural horn developed from an instrument of the hunt into an orchestral instrument in the 18th century. The switch from outdoors to concert hall was helped along by the development of hand horn technique, which allowed for all chromatic notes to be played on the instrument. This led to an extremely fruitful time of virtuoso hand horn soloists through outEurope. The instrument evoked a very particular aesthetic: light, nimble, virtuosic, “natural”, voice-like, etc. Then when the invention of the valves was applied to the natural horn it was met with a fair amount of resistance. The natural horn …
