Postmodernism & Paradise Lost: Reconsidering Knowledge, Politics And Literature, Mary Smith May 2009

Postmodernism & Paradise Lost: Reconsidering Knowledge, Politics And Literature, Mary Smith

Senior Honors Projects

“Postmodernism & Paradise Lost: Reconsidering Knowledge, Politics and Literature” is an interdisciplinary approach to interpreting John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, one that magnetizes literary, historical, and philosophical discourse as a means ultimately to redefine the concept of radicalism. Christopher Hill’s historical text, Milton and the English Revolution draws parallels between Milton’s poem and the radical ideas that flecked England’s political landscape in the 17th century. These parallels provide a sound basis to argue in the poetic realm that Milton’s poem is primarily a political text, more specifically a radical one. Such a claim poses a metaphysical question: what is …

French Fashion Industry: The Introduction Of A Fashion Brand To The French Market, Kristen Thomas

Senior Honors Projects

France has always thrived in the fashion forefront. Known for its couture and prêt-a-porter industries, it has developed into the fashion capital of the world. Therefore, the dual study of Fashion and French Language is a relevant, exciting, and dynamic combination.

As a senior, I am about to complete the Textiles, Merchandising, & Design and French Language dual degree program. Thus, I wanted to create a project that would combine both of my respective majors.

I have created a fashion line and brand that I will be presenting to the French market. My line Kristen Thomas en Luxe consists of …

Categorizing Humans, Animals, And Machines In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Martha Bellows May 2009

Categorizing Humans, Animals, And Machines In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Martha Bellows

Senior Honors Projects

From Plato to Descartes and Kant and now to modern day, there is a general idea that pervades Western society. This idea is about the uniqueness and superiority of the human being. We are rational and conscious beings that apparently stand alone in the world, separated intellectually from animals and biologically from machines. The relationship between humans, animals, and machines is a tumultuous one and it is not easily definable. For many classical philosophers, this relationship has always been a hierarchy. Humans are on the top and animals and machines fall somewhere below. These beliefs have created a distinct category …

Music Therapy And The Families Of Nicu Infants : A Proposed Program For Development And Implementation, Angela Ferraiuolo-Thompson May 2009

Music Therapy And The Families Of Nicu Infants : A Proposed Program For Development And Implementation, Angela Ferraiuolo-Thompson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis proposes a music therapy program for families whose infants are hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The goals of the program include the following: reduction of stress, anxiety and depression; working through trauma responses via the promotion of relaxation and the facilitation of coping skills. A review of the literature leads to the conclusion that families of NICU infants are under-served in terms of populations receiving music therapy as a supportive service. It is important to note that this population is often suffering from the same debilitating symptoms addressed in music therapy treatment of adults with …

A Feminist Revolution On The Popular Front : Muriel Rukeyser's 1930s Poetry, Janis Hubschman May 2009

A Feminist Revolution On The Popular Front : Muriel Rukeyser's 1930s Poetry, Janis Hubschman

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Modern American poet, Muriel Rukeyser (1913-1980) launched her half- century career in the thirties, a decade marked by an economic crisis in the United States, the rising threat of fascism abroad, and, consequently, by a politically-charged literary culture. Although Rukeyser’s deep engagement with social issues identified her from the start as a poet of the left, she maintained her political and artistic autonomy throughout the decade to shape a highly individualistic radical feminist aesthetic. My analysis of Rukeyser’s three collections from the 1930s: Theory of Flight (1935), U.S. 1 (1938), and A Turning Wind (1939) considers how the poet embraces, …

Literacy Instruction And The Learning Disabled High School Student : Ideas And Applications For A Mindful Classroom, Suzanne E. Kos May 2009

Literacy Instruction And The Learning Disabled High School Student : Ideas And Applications For A Mindful Classroom, Suzanne E. Kos

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis suggests that the emergent field of mindfulness and contemplative pedagogy can be a uniquely effective tool for use in the English classroom for learning disabled (LD) high school students. By first exploring definitions of difference and initiating a conversation about how we, as a society, conceptualize difference and how we provide literacy instruction for students who learn differently, this thesis advocates for a more complex and meaningful understanding of the difficult issues surrounding teaching literature and writing to LD high school students. The discussion then introduces some of the central tenets of mindfulness and contemplative practice and explores, …

Problems Of Connection : The Critique Of Englishness, Empire, And Nationhood In E.M. Forster's A Passage To India, Virginia Woolf's Orlando And George Orwell's "England Your England", Alexandra Megan Schultz May 2009

Problems Of Connection : The Critique Of Englishness, Empire, And Nationhood In E.M. Forster's A Passage To India, Virginia Woolf's Orlando And George Orwell's "England Your England", Alexandra Megan Schultz

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In the introduction to Modernism and Colonialism: British and Irish Literature, 1899-1939, Richard Begam and Michael Moses state that the “historical and cultural reality of modernism more often then not challenged the prevailing values of English culture, including its most powerful institution, the British Empire” (6). The problem of connection can be considered one of these troubled established ideologies. The English not only promoted relations between those of the same socioeconomic status and cultural upbringing, but actively discouraged connections of any other kind. This value system barred the English from any kind of social or political mobility because connections were …

The Use Of The Music Therapist’S Principal Instrument In Clinical Practice, Angela Voyajolu May 2009

The Use Of The Music Therapist’S Principal Instrument In Clinical Practice, Angela Voyajolu

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The purpose of this study is to determine the use of the music therapist’s primary instrument in clinical practice. Specifically, the interest lies in whether there is a relationship between the type of primary instrument reported and the degree to which it is used with clients. In the current study two-hundred and twenty-two therapists completed a survey concerning the use of their principal instrument in clinical practice. The use of the principal instrument was limited to the timeframe of one year so as to obtain results on current practices. Results suggest that many music therapists do use their principal instrument …

Adaptive Piano Pedagogy For The Student With Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Nava Zeevi May 2009

Adaptive Piano Pedagogy For The Student With Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Nava Zeevi

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Music therapy is a well known means of creating emotional, academic and social advances in the life of children with autism. However, private instrumental instructions, a form of music therapy for this population, are not easily accessible. Not many piano teachers have the experience, background or understanding needed to teach students with varying degrees of challenges in sensory integration, information processing, aural and visual discrimination, motor problems and low muscle tone.

The literature review in this thesis includes an overview of autistic spectrum disorder, the special learning needs of the child with autism, and general piano pedagogy theories, strategies and …

Unruly Wives And Dancing Girls : The Objectification Of Women In Aristophanic Comedy, Jessica Marie Berhang May 2009

Unruly Wives And Dancing Girls : The Objectification Of Women In Aristophanic Comedy, Jessica Marie Berhang

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Though the plays of the early Greek comedian Aristophanes are replete with crude humor and buffoonish behavior, it is important to examine the works through a more critical lens rather than discounting them as mere entertainment. Aristophanes expounds upon political conflict and leaders, scoffs at social mores, and highlights the many facets of human nature. In addition, the dynamic between men and women is a central theme in many of Aristophanes’ plays. Comedies such as the Lysistrata, Assemblywomen, and Women at the Thesmophoria feature women who appear to be empowered as they try to fight against patriarchal systems; however, examining …

Adapting The End: Responding To Standards Of Learning In Theatre For Children, Jamie Lish May 2009

Adapting The End: Responding To Standards Of Learning In Theatre For Children, Jamie Lish

Theses and Dissertations

Theatre is the passport to the creation of a balanced educational system in the United States (US), while standardized testing is the downfall of the ideology behind ‘No Child Left Behind’ (NCLB). As an educator, I was greatly influenced by Howard Gardner, theorist of Multiple Intelligences and Neil Fleming theorist of learning modalities. This work has carried over into my work in theatre as a director. Theatre does not have to didactically serve formal education, which emphasizes mathematics and reading/writing, nor does it have to be merely a spectacle. Theatre can be experimental, artistic, cathartic, foster social and intrapersonal skills …

Our Greatest Want: An Examination Of The Rhetorical Tendencies Employed By African American Female Abolitionist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911), Lauren Deborah Nye

You are standing at the doorway of a church in Philadelphia. Looking in, you see a mass of heads, all turned toward the podium, waiting for someone to get behind that podium. Then you see her. She is an attractive African American with “a fair figure, long, lustrous hair, and facial features pleasant to behold” (Logan 49). You overhear one person comment that she looks like “a bronze muse” (Logan 31). A reporter will later write that she has “a strong face, with a shadowed glow upon it, indicative of thoughtful fervor, and of a nature most femininely sensitive, but …

The Synagogue Of Dura Europos: An Inclusive Narrative, Joanna Smith May 2009

The Synagogue Of Dura Europos: An Inclusive Narrative, Joanna Smith

Art & Art History

In 1932, the discovery of the Synagogue of Dura Europos in Syria presented a turning point in the study of art, architecture, and Art History in general. The reason behind the turning point was the fact that this discovery yielded the first ever examples of Jewish art and architecture. Within the Synagogue were fresco panels telling stories from the Hebrew bible. The report of this discovery was felt throughout the entire Art History world not only at this point in time, but in the modern day as well. In addition to the continued discussion surrounding the frescoes, their legitimacy as …

Review Of Sebag-Montefiore, Hugh, Dunkirk: Fight To The Last Man, James V. Koch May 2009

Review Of Sebag-Montefiore, Hugh, Dunkirk: Fight To The Last Man, James V. Koch

Economics Faculty Publications

(First Paragraph) Hugh Sebag-Montefiore correctly notes that multitudes of books already have been written about the evacuation of the British and French troops from Dunkirk in May and June 1940. He argues, however, that these accounts generally have neglected the crucial role of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in making this escape possible. He agrees that great credit must go to Adm. Bertram Ramsay, the Royal Navy, and almost one thousand small boat owners who actually moved the beleaguered troops from France to England. Nevertheless, he asserts, without the BEF, there would have been no evacuation, or at least a …

Health Consequences Of Rural Women’S Productive Role In Agriculture In The Philippines And Other Developing Countries, Ma. Elena Chiong-Javier May 2009

Health Consequences Of Rural Women’S Productive Role In Agriculture In The Philippines And Other Developing Countries, Ma. Elena Chiong-Javier

Journal of International Women's Studies

Agriculture is central to developing countries like the Philippines and rural women contribute a substantial share of the labor that goes into this sector as food producers or agricultural workers. In the wake of numerous studies conducted worldwide about women since the United Nations’ Decade for Women (1976-1984), data appear sparse on the relationship between women’s work and women’s health in the agricultural setting to enable policy makers and program implementors to adequately address their health needs. Thus this study aimed to determine the nature of available information in the gender literature to enable us to understand the link between …

The Role Of Women In Providing And Improving Household Food Security In Sudan: Implications For Reducing Hunger And Malnutrition, Fatma Osman Ibnouf May 2009

The Role Of Women In Providing And Improving Household Food Security In Sudan: Implications For Reducing Hunger And Malnutrition, Fatma Osman Ibnouf

Journal of International Women's Studies

Relevant and consistent with the recent growing interest to assess the contribution of women to economic activities in Sudan, this study seeks to assess women’s contribution to their household food supply and nutrition status in rural Sudan. As for the contribution of the research, the research is expected to contribute to improve the understanding of the important contribution of women to economic activities and in particular in providing and improving household food security in Sudan and thus valuing the potential role of women in reducing hunger and malnutrition.

Agricultural production (farm and livestock products) with supplemental resources (processed and preserved …

What Remains Of Srebrenica? Motherhood, Transitional Justice And Yearning For The Truth, Olivera Simic May 2009

What Remains Of Srebrenica? Motherhood, Transitional Justice And Yearning For The Truth, Olivera Simic

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article explores the role of the local non-governmental association ‘Mothers of Srebrenica’ in the complex transitional justice processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The association gathers women who survived the Srebrenica genocide in July 1995 and creates an important public space for the crying out of their grievances and lobbing for their goals. The ‘Mothers of Srebrenica’ also create a space for widows and displaced women to share their concerns and support each other. While the ‘Mothers of Srebrenica’ use the rhetoric of victimhood and motherhood whenever they speak out, I argue that they, in fact, challenge the notion of …

The Failed Marriage Between Women And The Landless People’S Movement (Mst) In Brazil, Rute Caldeira May 2009

The Failed Marriage Between Women And The Landless People’S Movement (Mst) In Brazil, Rute Caldeira

Journal of International Women's Studies

The present article examines the processes of inequality reproduced inside the MST-run rural encampments; specifically the ones affecting women the most, and in particular women heads of households. This examination leads to the related consideration of the relationship between the MST, its lideranças, and women settlers. Although women are the ones most affected by these processes of inequality, their disadvantaged position is ignored by the movement, in theory an organisation on the Left. This relationship between the MST and women or ‘women’s issues’ mirrors the old question of the ‘failed marriage’ between women, feminism and the Left in Latin …

Reporting From The Edge Of Reality: Writing As Phantom Limb In Goretti Kyomuhendo’S Fiction, Andrew H. Armstrong May 2009

Reporting From The Edge Of Reality: Writing As Phantom Limb In Goretti Kyomuhendo’S Fiction, Andrew H. Armstrong

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this paper I have explored the ways in which Ugandan writer Goretti Kyomuhendo writes of the effects of extreme violence in the African Great Lakes Region on female subjectivities by thematizing the dynamics of oppression and submission in post-colonial Africa. I have paid particular attention to the ways that Kyomuhendo’s fiction focalizeds the narrators’/protagonists’ acts of telling by foregrounding the imperiled female within the dangerous masculine spaces of the socially dislocated and displaced societies. The two texts I have focused on narrate extreme violence from the perspectives of displaced female protagonists, highlighting the notion of displaced subjectivity by foregrounding …
