An Analysis Of The Female Experience In The School Superintendency: Understanding Female Motivations For Assuming And Exiting The Superintendency With Relevant Applications For Mentoring Programs, Laura Allport Hammack

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There were three primary purposes of this study. First, the study sought to increase the knowledge base of motivations that females hold for assuming the school superintendency while simultaneously comparing and contrasting results with male counterparts. Second, the study analyzed the degree to which motivations for assuming the superintendency were realized once the female assumes the position. The third purpose of the study was to analyze the degree to which female superintendents have profited from a role model, or mentor, to help them find their way through the unexpected anxieties while assuming the profession. 111 Of the 222 respondents, 32 …

Spiritual Struggles And Self-Discrepancy, Robert Carlisle

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spiritual Struggles occur when a person's spirituality has been threatened and must be modified or changed. Researchers explain that there are three types of struggles - divine, interpersonal and intrapersonal. In this study it was proposed that religious discrepancies could lead to spiritual struggles. There are two major types of discrepancies: actual/ideal and actual/ought. Actual/ideal discrepancies exist when there is a difference between what people think they ideally should be like and what they are actually. An actual/ought discrepancy is a difference between what people think they ought to be and what they actually are. It was proposed that religious …

That Others May Live: The Cold War Sacrifice Of Ellenton, South Carolina, Samuel Ritchie May 2009

That Others May Live: The Cold War Sacrifice Of Ellenton, South Carolina, Samuel Ritchie

All Theses

The forced evacuation of Ellenton, South Carolina, beginning in November 1950 was the direct result of increasing international tension following the Soviet acquisition of an atomic weapon. Facing the loss of the American monopoly on nuclear weapons and an increasing Communist threat, the Truman administration authorized the construction of a nuclear facility near Ellenton, South Carolina, which would prove vital in the development of a hydrogen bomb. The people of Ellenton and the surrounding towns of Dunbarton, Meyers Mill, Robbins, and Leigh were required to sacrifice their homes and communities to provide land for the Savannah River Plant. The reaction …

Yes We Can: The Impact Membership In Black Greek Sororities Has On The Experience And Persistence Of Black Women Students At Predominantly White 4-Year Institutions, Rosiline D. Floyd May 2009

Yes We Can: The Impact Membership In Black Greek Sororities Has On The Experience And Persistence Of Black Women Students At Predominantly White 4-Year Institutions, Rosiline D. Floyd

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact Black Greek Sorority membership has on the experience and persistence of Black women students at predominantly White 4-year institutions. Scholarly research has generally ignored both the postsecondary experiences of Black women and the relevance of Black Greek sororities. Existing research on Blacks in college primarily concentrated on negative statistics such as low graduation and attrition rates. Studies lump Black males and Black females together, failing to address the uniqueness of Black women. Consequently, the voice of Black women remains ignored or unheard and her experiences unsubstantiated. Similarly, Black Greek Letter …

Representations Of The Field In Graduate Courses: Using Parody To Question All Positions, Nancy Mack May 2009

Representations Of The Field In Graduate Courses: Using Parody To Question All Positions, Nancy Mack

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

The author reports on and analyzes the inclusion of parody in her sequence of assignments for a graduate composition theory seminar. She contends that having students write parodies of particular theorists and theoretical camps enables them to gain critical leverage that they might not otherwise obtain on a field (in this case, composition studies).

On ‘Chrism’ And ‘Anti-Christs’ In 1 John 2:18-27: A Hypothesis, Martin F. Connell May 2009

On ‘Chrism’ And ‘Anti-Christs’ In 1 John 2:18-27: A Hypothesis, Martin F. Connell

Theology Faculty Publications

This inquiry studies 1 John because it has the most explicit testimony in the New Testament to initiation by anointing and the unique word χρίσμα, "chrism." Chrism was — and in some churches still is — an ointment whose name is rooted in the verb χριειν, "to anoint." Critical studies have amply demonstrated that the title "Christ" had theological carriage in the first century, but rarely, if ever, has it been suggested that the theological title also had liturgical bearing. It seems almost too blithe a suggestion to posit that those who became members of the body of Christ, the …

Ambiguity And Apocalypse: Metafictional Reading Strategies In The Crying Of Lot 49 And One Hundred Years Of Solitude, David Foltz May 2009

Ambiguity And Apocalypse: Metafictional Reading Strategies In The Crying Of Lot 49 And One Hundred Years Of Solitude, David Foltz

All Theses

Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 and Gabriel Garc’a M‡rquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude posit reading strategies linked by similar methodologies and complementary conclusions. The exposition in the following chapters examines the novels' methodologies on three levels--the utilization of historical background, the Principle of Uncertainty, and apocalyptic endings--to establish a basis for the novels' shared perspective on narrative and, by default, approaches to engaging narrative. This thesis argues that the novels demonstrate that as uncertainty increases within narrative the potential for meaning increases, and the converse--as uncertainty decreases, the potential for meaning decreases. The resultant apocalyptic endings of …

The New Military History : General Jonathan M. Wainwright And His Experiences As A Prisoner Of The Japanese During World War Ii, John H. Chase May 2009

The New Military History : General Jonathan M. Wainwright And His Experiences As A Prisoner Of The Japanese During World War Ii, John H. Chase

Honors Theses

This thesis applies the principles of the "new military history" to the experiences of General Jonathan Wainwright from his surrender to the Japanese on Corregidor on May 6, 1942, until his liberation by the Russian Red Army three years, three months, and eighteen days later. At its core, the basics of this "new" historical methodology are seductively simple and direct. It is an effort to capture in research and writing the multiple layers of events, people, places and cultures to present a greatly enhanced, and more genuine, interpretation of the past.

Perceptions And Practices Of Pre-School Through Eighth-Grade Christian School International Administrators In The Selection Process Of Teachers, Timothy Van Soelen May 2009

Perceptions And Practices Of Pre-School Through Eighth-Grade Christian School International Administrators In The Selection Process Of Teachers, Timothy Van Soelen

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Principals are the primary influencers in the teacher selection process. They have the opportunity to improve the quality their school each time a teacher vacancy occurs through the process of determining of their school’s need, recruiting candidates who might be a good match, and selecting what they hope will be a highly effective teacher. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare existing perceptions and practices that preschool through eighth-grade principals hold to during the teacher selection process. Specific characteristics of principals and the schools they serve were analyzed by the dimensions of a candidate’s personal traits, professional …
