The poetry of Native American poet Joy Harjo, one of our living and pre-eminent poets in the United States, is a rich blend of oral and contemporary written traditions.

This dissertation examines three themes in her work: memory, language, and transformation. Each of these elements is present in Native oral ceremonial traditions where memory functions to return individuals and communities to a sense of wholeness and happiness; where language serves as a powerful tool to enact healing; and where spiritual (and sometimes physical) transformation of self and community is made possible through the juncture of all three elements. As women struggle for acceptance as leaders within the Christian community there is no more controversial teachings about women found in the Bible than those ofthe apostle Paul. In one breath he writes to the church in Galatians, "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus" (Gal.3: 28 NRSV). When taken at face value this passage eliminates ethnic, social and gender barriers; in this verse Paul recognizes and addresses the dignity and worth of all humanity.

The Pacific Northwest opened a door of opportunity for people from all over the world. Among those who settled there to pursue the American dream were many Japanese and their descendants. Since the establishment of direct shipping line between the Pacific Northwest and Japan in the late nineteenth century, numerous Japanese immigrants crossed the Pacific Ocean to seek employment in the United States. As the number of lssei (first generation Japanese) increased, they began to organize institutions to help each other and improve their life in the New World. One of the most significant institutions was the Japanese Language School. …

This paper purposes to examine the role and impact of the solecisms found in the Apocalypse. Before one can isolate a discussion about solecisms one must first address the issue of the style of Revelation (and, to some extent, that of the NT in general) and the degree to which Semiticisms appear. Thus, though the paper wishes to focus upon solecisms, a rather large portion of the paper will necessarily first address the whole issue of the nature and style of the Greek in Revelation so that a clear understanding of solecisms might emerge.

Asiatic Cholera And Dysentery On The Oregon Trail: A Historical Medical Geography Study, Brian Lee Altonen

Two disease regions existed on the Oregon Trail. Asiatic cholera impacted the Platte River flood plain from 1849 to 1852. Dysentery developed two endemic foci due to the decay of buffalo carcasses in eastern and middle Nebraska between 1844 and 1848, but later developed a much larger endemic region west of this Great Plains due to the infection of livestock carcasses by opportunistic bacteria.

This study demonstrates that whereas Asiatic cholera diffusion along the Trail was defined primarily by human population features, topography, and regional climate along the Platte River flood plain, the distribution of opportunistic dysentery along the Trail …

This thesis is an exploration in painting via approximately one hundred small works in acrylic, gouache, and graphite on paper. The written discussion clarifies my approach to this body of work: how it was conceived, the use of materials, as well as its purpose.

The paintings in this exhibition are an investigation of the dichotomy between rational and intuitive processes. The scope ranges from a purely historical perspective to include personal history as well. The work references ancient mythologies and the ordering systems that humans have created to explain the world around them as an expression of rational processes. The objects and symbols used derive from my interest in archaeology, mythology, astrology, and astronomy of the ancient world.
