"Journal Of The Branch Of The Church Of Christ In Pontiac,…1834": Hyrum Smith's Division Of Zion's Camp, Craig K. Manscill

On April 21, 1834, Hyrum Smith and Lyman Wight set out from Kirtland, Ohio, for Pontiac, Michigan, to recruit volunteers for the march of Zion's Camp. Their objective was to lead their recruits on a six-hundred-mile march to a prearranged rendezvous with Joseph Smith's Kirtland division in Missouri. Typically, scholarly treatments of the march of Zion's Camp have focused on the accounts of the Kirtland, Ohio, legion while overlooking the Hyrum Smith-Lyman Wight division of Zion's Camp. Yet Hyrum's group, when compared with Joseph's command, demonstrated a similarly significant commitment to addressing the needs of their fellow Saints in Missouri. …

War Games: Odysseus At Troy, Corinne Ondine Pache

This paper examines two aspects of Odysseus' behavior that fundamentally set him apart from the other Greek heroes in the Iliad. Odysseus at Troy superficially appears to share many traits with the other Homeric heroes: he is a prominent participant both in assemblies and in combat, and he takes part in many of the decisive episodes of the narrative. He shares in the kleos ("glory") of the other renowned warriors by association, but closer examination shows that he speaks and behaves in an idiosyncratic, often unconventional, manner, and that many of his words and deeds reflect a stance of …

One purpose of our paper is to present a final pre-publication report on our efforts to publish the approximately 2900 fragments from Qumran Cave 4 that comprise our allotment, designated "4QMiscellaneous and Unidentified." These fragments are found on 40 PAM plates, 43.660-43.686, and 43.688-43.701. We have examined all of the plates in the Rockefeller Museum that contain our fragments, have compared them with the PAM photographic plates received from the Israel Antiquities Authority, and are now working to finish preparing our transcriptions of and notes on these fragments. We will submit our work for publication in DJD XXXIII in 1999.

On 11 September 1887, the front page of the Norfolk Virginian had a bold headline, "Four Hundred Mormons," along with the following information: "The Old Dominion steamer Richmond, which arrived from New York yesterday, had on board four-hundred and twenty Mormon immigrants from the British Isles who had arrived in New York on Thursday on the steamship Wisconsin. The immigrants are all new converts to the Mormon religion and will swell the number of adherents to the Brigham Young faith in the territory considerably. It is my view, and here, no doubt, I am pre-empting my conclusion, that what literary and feminist historicism recognizes as the querelle des femmes, the debate as to the status and political role of women, is in fact underpinned and motivated by a much less explicit, yet nonetheless portentous, querelle des lois. The querelle des femmes, in other words, was always a polemic as to the legal status of women, as to their definition and role in theology and jurisprudence, canon and civil law. In this paper, we use the case of Chinese religion in Singapore to examine the relationships between religion and modernity, and between social processes, on the one hand, and spatial conceptions, forms and structures and temporal practices, on the other. Specifically, we look at how traditional Chinese rituals are being modified, reinterpreted and invented to fit with modern living. Such ritual transformations entail reconstructed notions of space and time. Through such transformations, modernity does not simply lead to the demise of religious beliefs and practices but allows for a continued role for religion in providing a meaning system for Chinese …

Los testimonios que confinnan el desarrollo del proceso de debilitamiento y la subsecuente desaparición de la consonante /d/ intervocálica en español, se remontan a fechas muy antiguas. En la actualidad, frente a palabras que han conservado la /d/, como crudo (de crudu), nido (de nidu), hay otras donde se ha perdido, como oir (de audire), creer (de credere), pie (de pede(m)). Sin embargo, las demás sonoras, /b, g/, se han conservado con mayor regularidad. Se trata de un fenómeno revelador de que posiblemente las dentales se caractericen por un grado menor de fuerza consonántica que las labiales o las velares.

This photo essay provides an overview of the history of the Angel Moroni statues, beginning with the angel atop the Nauvoo Temple and continuing through to designs used on the Salt Lake Temple, the Washington D.C. Chapel, the Los Angeles California Temple, the Washington D.C. Temple, and other temples built through 2000. Angel Moroni statues have come to symbolize for Latter-day Saints the restoration of the gospel in the latter days. The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch is a charming children's picture book. Part of its charm lies in its ability to anticipate the conventions of the fairy tale genre, creating expectations for readers, then pushing the boundaries of the genre in novel ways. As the story moves outside traditional expectations with its unexpected reversals (the princess fights the dragon to save the prince, and the fight is more mental trickery than physical battle), the boundaries of the genre are muddied, making my secondary students smile when I read to them. But it is the ending that surprises them most. …

Multicultural issues in psychotherapy have increasingly been recognized as important in the provision of mental health services to our diverse population. Issues such as beliefs about mental health, attitudes toward authority, and even world view affect how clients access and make use of psychotherapy. Cultural views are essential to how one sees the world, and consequently there is much debate about whether clients would benefit from having therapists from the same cultural background.
