Survey Of Auditory Brainstem Response Referral Criteria, Shannon N. Felder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of the project was to survey recognized “experts” in the field of neurodiagnostic audiology and practicing audiologists regarding their referral criteria and referral patterns for administering an auditory brainstem response test (ABR). For purposes of this study, “expert” was defined as any recognized audiologist with at least two or more publications and/or seminars in the field of auditory evoked potentials. Responses of experts and practicing audiologists were compared and contrasted to establish: a) if there was a standard referral pattern; b) what, if any, were the apparent critical components of referral patterns; and, c) whether or not …

Difference In Hearing Screening Failure Rates As A Function Of Ethnicity In Well Newborns Screened At Tampa General Hospital, Sybil N. Prewitt Dec 2000

Difference In Hearing Screening Failure Rates As A Function Of Ethnicity In Well Newborns Screened At Tampa General Hospital, Sybil N. Prewitt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The difference in otoacoustic emission (OAE) hearing screening failure rates as a function of ethnic category was investigated in a population of newborns at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, Florida. Clinical observation led to a concern that due to a higher incidence of outer and middle ear dysfunction in Hispanic newborns and children, screening could result in disparate failure rates, with a larger number of these infants requiring further testing. This result would warrant changes in current protocols, as well as screener training, and parent counseling practices.

Between January and July of 2000, 1407 newborns were tested utilizing distortion product otoacoustic emission …

Teaching Ethics At The Primary Level, Joseph R. Sanok Dec 2000

Teaching Ethics At The Primary Level, Joseph R. Sanok

Honors Theses

Over the last century, the teaching of ethics in primary schools has changed greatly. The greatest influence upon public schools has been the shift in parents' attitudes towards teaching ethics in the school setting. Parents have progressively wanted to have more control over their child's ethical learning, thus becoming more critical of the teaching of ethics within public schools. This has led to greater input from parents. Christian ethics had long been the yardstick for ethical teachings, although in 1962 in the Engel v. Vitale case, school prayer was ruled unconstitutional, removing Christian views from the school setting. As a …

The Role Of Audiology Technicians In The Va System, John Terry Berardino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Eligibility reform in the VA and the resulting increased caseloads have brought about unacceptable wait times for new audiology appointments. Mandates to decrease wait times without increased resources have brought new demands on audiology clinics. One proposed solution is the addition of audiology technicians to VA audiology clinic practice.

The first purpose of this study was to survey the attitudes of VA audiologists and service chiefs regarding the use of technicians. The second purpose was to ask the survey respondents to assign as generally appropriate or inappropriate, job duties which might be accomplished by an audiology technician. Following a pre-survey …

Evangelical Episcopalians And The Church Of Jesus In Mexico, 1857–1906, John Steven Rice

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Shortly after the adoption of the 1857 Constitution in Mexico, a small group of Mexican priests left the Roman Catholic Church and attempted to establish a national catholic apostolic church in Mexico. This movement became known as the Church of Jesus. With the help of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States it continued until 1906 when it ceased to be independent and officially became a mission project of the American Episcopal Church. Historians have placed the burden of failure of the Church of Jesus on factors in Mexico and have not taken into account the party strife within …

Dark Side Of The Dream: The Social Gothic In Vietnam Era America, Greg Smith Dec 2000

Dark Side Of The Dream: The Social Gothic In Vietnam Era America, Greg Smith

Dissertations

Gothic horror narratives have been a mainstay of American literature since Charles Brockden Brown's 1798 novel Wieland, and also of our cinema since the celebrated Universal films Dracula and Frankenstein in 1931. Often considered tripe by professional literary and film critics, such tales—both in written and cinematic form—began to gamer intellectual attention during the 1970s as their general popularity soared and as academic interest in American popular culture increased significantly. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Gothic genre became one of the most discussed and debated aspects of American pop culture, with numerous critics weighing in on its potential implications, …

Women, Environment And Development: Sub-Saharan Africa And Latin America, Evaline Tiondi Nov 2000

Women, Environment And Development: Sub-Saharan Africa And Latin America, Evaline Tiondi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Issues related to women, environment and development constitute a major global concern today. Women's roles as agents of change in the environment has increasingly become the focus of both research and policy concerns. Environmental resource management is directly linked to development, and this makes it crucial to examine the activities of women more closely. Women's role in the management of natural resources assumes a multidimensional nature. Unfortunately, the central and crucial role that women play is often both overlooked and unappreciated, rendering them invisible and greatly diminishing their contribution as both producers and active agents in sustainable development. One of …

As America enters the 2V l century, our systems of education must adapt to the changes in culture and technology. Our visions of the modern classroom are no longer limited to a room on a campus with a professor and a blackboard Many classes are going fully online, some are meeting only once a semester if at all. This type of learning and teaching opens the door for many complex questions: What is the most effective style of web site to use? How should the instructor form the requirements of the class? What should the instructor use for academic evaluation …

從童話功能考察金庸武俠小說的敘事特色, Chun To Lau Sep 2000

從童話功能考察金庸武俠小說的敘事特色, Chun To Lau

Theses & Dissertations

Carolina Chameleons : North Carolina Confederate Soldiers Who Joined The Union Army, David E. Arthur

Master's Theses

This thesis traces 862 North Carolina Civil War soldiers who fought for the Confederacy, deserted or were taken prisoner, and then enrolled in the United States army. The pre-war lives, Confederate and United States military service, and post-war experiences of these men are examined to discover why they chose to enlist in the Union army. A sample of 226 soldiers was compiled by selecting every fourth county in the state in which these "Carolina Chameleons" lived. Their pre-war lives were revealed in the 1860 Population Census and their Southern service in Confederate military records compiled in Louis H. Manarin and …

Queen In Peril : The Elizabethan Parliament Of 1584-85, James Vernon Madison Aug 2000

Queen In Peril : The Elizabethan Parliament Of 1584-85, James Vernon Madison

Master's Theses

In November 1584 Queen Elizabeth I summoned her fifth Parliament. Over twelve years had elapsed since Parliamentary elections had been conducted, which resulted in a young and inexperienced House of Commons in 1584. Normally Parliaments addressed the granting of a subsidy, local issues, and concerns of the realm. However, this Parliament's primary concerns were with the protection of Elizabeth and the safety of the realm. In the months preceding the Parliamentary session London began receiving signatures to the Bond of Association. This unique document implemented a unified front against any person or persons involved with the untimely death of Elizabeth. …

White Savages In Hunting Shirts : The Rifleman's Costume Of National Identity And Rebellion In The American Revolution, Byron C. Smith Aug 2000

White Savages In Hunting Shirts : The Rifleman's Costume Of National Identity And Rebellion In The American Revolution, Byron C. Smith

Master's Theses

This thesis relies on primary sources to address the significance of clothing and accoutrements worn by backwoods riflemen during the era of the American Revolution. As North America's rebellious colonies became a nation, they struggled to find cultural symbols that distinguished them from their European cousins. As Europeans often identified America symbolically as the "noble savage," in turn some Americans looked to the Indian for inspiration in their new search for national identity. During the Revolution many Americans from backwoods regions of the middle and southern colonies, wearing uniquely American garments called hunting shirts, openly rebelled against their European heritage …

Mass, Michael J. Miller Aug 2000

Mass, Michael J. Miller

Masters Theses

MASS is a musical setting of the ordinary parts of the mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. These five texts constitute the bulk of Christian liturgy for well over the past millennia. MASS is scored for SATB chorus and small chamber orchestra.

The primary concept from which the movements derive their harmonic material is "chiasmus." A chiasmus is an inverted relationship between the syntactic elements of parallel phrases, as in the phrase "to stop too fearful, and too faint to go." It is a rhetorical device that is the basis of much Hebrew thought and permeates …

Toward A Provident Working Class: French And English Social Reform Rhetoric, 1880-1914, James R. Gavan Aug 2000

Toward A Provident Working Class: French And English Social Reform Rhetoric, 1880-1914, James R. Gavan

Masters Theses

This research examines the rhetoric of belle epoque English and French middle class social observers. Addressing the "social question," they engaged in a debate on how best to appease an impoverished, alienated, and increasingly militant working class. Historians cite this discourse, and the meager legislation it fostered, as a transition from the unbridled nineteenth century laissez-faire to the welfare democracy characteristic of the twentieth century.

Central to the "social question" was the issue of improving social relations without altering existing class hierarchies (which favored the middle classes). Many social commentators shunned the passage of legislative safety nets in favor of …
