In previous newsletters we have been somewhat general in arguing how sociology can offer distinct perspectives and possible solutions to architectural design problems. In this article we instead give a specific hypothetical problem that might well confront the architect. In doing so we might be able to see what sociology can offer the architect in terms of possible insights and solutions, and we might also find that in analyzing one problem we may well find connections to still larger problems.

The architectural integrity of the house continues to be impaired by past and on-going alterations. Window and door changes along with major interior reconstruction have altered the house considerably from its original appearance. It is the addition on the southwest corner, however, that is so intrusive as to permanently compromise the house's historic architecture. For this reason, I am recommending denial of the application for historic designation.

The house at 895 7th Street is a two-story, hipped-roof box with 1/1 windows and a central entrance. This house type was built locally in the first decade of the 20th century and is notable for its exterior simplicity and lack of decoration. Removal of the one-story porch across the front, replacement of the original front door, and enclosure of the rear porch are major alterations.

Arcata has several examples of this house type, but only this one and the house at the northwest corner of 15th and I Streets have retained their original character. The house directly across 7th …

In the spring of 1983, several Arlington community groups formed the Performing Arts Coalition. Foremost among their priorities was the establishment of a Performing Arts Center for their community. Arlington undisputedly needs a cultural center and the growth of coalition groups is proof that the city has sufficient interest to sustain such an effort. A performing arts center would be beneficial to the coalition for many reasons. Shared staff and facilities increases the cost effectiveness of the member organizations. A consolidation of facilities would produce the best equipped showcase for the performing arts, and the consolidation of creative talent and …

Energy-efficient designs in clothing, interior architecture and furnishings were evaluated (a) to assess consumers’ attitudes toward the designs, (b) to compare acceptability levels of participants who were knowledgeable in the home energy field with those who were less knowledgeable and (c) to determine if consumers had a preference for using housing, clothing or furnishings in meeting their thermal comfort needs. Four designs generated by the University of Tennessee-Energy Design competition were evaluated: a leisure outfit, a lounging dress, a water-storage collector (room divider and coffee tables) and a solar waterbed. The Sacred Departments For Temple Work In Nauvoo: The Assembly Room And The Council Chamber, Lisle G. Brown

The paper examines the physical layout of two rooms, one in the upper floor Joseph Smith's store, and the other in the attic of the Nauvoo Temple, for administering what is called the Mormon temple endowment. In both cases only temporary modifications were made to the interior rooms, using canvas partitions which were later removed. The text describes the appearance and arrangement of these modified interior spaces, based on contemporary historical sources, because the original buildings were completely destroyed during the 1800s.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the functions: ordinances, meetings, programs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the development of the physical plant. Inversely, the effect of Church house forms on the development of Church function was investigated. It was found that:
1. In Latter-day Saint Church development, form has always followed function.
2. Function has influenced form to a great extent. Priesthood, meeting, or other program needs are a prime factor in changing the form and design of Church buildings.
