The theoretical framework of Stephen R. Kellert linking nature and the built environment was used as the basis for this research. This case study research was conducted to describe the effect nature had on learning among children 3 to 6 years of age attending two north central Florida Montessori learning environments. Methods were examined by which this phenomenon might be studied in more detail in order to: (a) provide verification of the independent and dependent variables, (b) establish the empirical measure of learning outcomes, and (c) provide the refinement of the variable learning outcomes as influenced by nature.

During the spring semester of 2010, I have been working on the design of a psychiatric residential treatment facility in Wheelwright, Kentucky as part of the requirements for ID 659, Interior Design Graduate Studio. I am a senior, but was allowed permission to enroll in this class because of my interest in research-based design. The facility will offer therapy services in a home environment for seven adolescents between the ages of ten and seventeen. Educators’ perceptions influence academic protocols regarding the level at which evidence-based design is introduced to design students. Evidence-based design, a research methodology based on quantitative and qualitative inquiry that informs design decisions, permeated healthcare design to the point that the two are almost synonymous (Hamilton and Watkins, 2009; Nussbaumer, 2009). As this research based approach spreads throughout the profession, multiple specialty areas in architecture and interior design adopt evidence-based design into their methodologies (Hamilton and Watkins, 2009). The purpose of this exploratory, descriptive study was to determine the firm and practitioner characteristics that impact the adoption of ERD strategies, to ascertain practitioners’ knowledge of ERD strategies and certified products, and to document the adoption of ERD strategies using Rogers’ model of the innovation adoption process.

The objectives of this study evaluated whether interior designer’s had a positive or negative attitude toward sustainable interior design practices.  Next, it evaluated the three areas of perceived barriers interior designers encounter when using sustainable interior design practices (project capabilities, transition to sustainability, and knowledge and skills associated with sustainable design).  The final objectives determined if attitudes and barriers affected the use of sustainable interior design practices, and determined whether the attitudes of interior designers and the barriers encountered by interior designers were related.  Overall, attitudes toward sustainable interior design practices were positive.  Barrier scores indicated that factors affecting project …

This study investigated the perception that mass media perpetuate critique of interior design projects using non-environmentally responsible design (non-ERD) assessment models, based on traditional ideological considerations, as opposed to models based on environmentally responsible design (ERD) philosophies. Using the Delphi technique, thirty keywords were selected, based on educators’ and practitioners’ content knowledge, then categorized into seven dimensions representing ERD or non-ERD attributes. These dimensions formed design assessment models, which included a distinction between ethical ERD attributes and aesthetic non-ERD attributes. Many times, these virtual tours that are produced are slow, methodical, and limit the viewer's perspective of the home. This research looks into using computer game engines to display the virtual tour in real time, thus removing the long render time requirements and limited viewer perspective.
