Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This project documents the historical, technical, and creative significance of recording studios through both industry examples and the design and construction of a personal backyard studio. By examining iconic studios such as Abbey Road and Capitol Records, the paper highlights how technological innovation, acoustic engineering, and architectural design have shaped the evolution of recorded music. These concepts are then applied to the planning and construction of a custom-built recording studio, emphasizing room dimensions, sound isolation techniques, acoustic treatment, lighting, and sustainable design choices. In addition, the project addresses the importance of aesthetics and emotional comfort in creating a space that …

From A Shtetl House To An Urban Apartment: The Soviet Jewish Home Negotiated, Transformed, And Reimagined, Anna Kushkova
Jewish Folklore and Ethnology
This essay argues that despite the powerful forces of assimilation, official campaigns against Jewish religion/languages, and grassroots/state antisemitism, the “Jewish home” did not disappear, as is sometimes assumed, but continued to present a site of Jewish ethnic production and transmission, creativity, and resistance during the Soviet regime. In the Soviet Union, especially in the postwar period, Jewish ethnic culture was forced to leave the public sphere, where it became unwelcome and even dangerous, and withdrew into the less visible space of domestic interiors. The degree of Jewish public presence varied geographically: the situation was generally better in the Baltic Republics, …

The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In Changing The Traditional Design Form Of Children's Museums: Towards Integrating Artificial Intelligence Technologies In Architectural Design Education., Nevine Ismail Mahmoud, Amira Fawzy Helmy Almaz, Heba Jahin
Journal of Engineering Research
Children's museums are crucial for their educational and entertainment value, but they also need to adapt to technological advancements to maintain their appeal, especially for older children. The design of these museums should vary between permanent and mobile spaces to maximize their benefits in different areas. Interactive exhibits in children's museums can bridge the gap between traditional and modern education, appealing to a wider age range, and adapting to changing educational needs in different communities by offering a mix of permanent and mobile museums.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the design process by enhancing efficiency and creativity. It helps architects …
Effect Of Workplace Design On Collaboration And Satisfaction In Space System Command, Joshua A. Hagood
Effect Of Workplace Design On Collaboration And Satisfaction In Space System Command, Joshua A. Hagood
Theses and Dissertations
This study addresses a significant knowledge gap regarding the influence of physical workplace design on employee collaboration and satisfaction with the physical environment within U.S. Space Force technical military organizations. While seminal industry research consistently demonstrates that physical design and indoor environmental quality influence employee satisfaction and collaboration (e.g., Candido et al., 2015; Sailer et al., 2021), the understanding of these impacts within military contexts remains limited. Using a quantitative post-occupancy evaluation survey, adapted from the Sustainable Post Occupancy Evaluation Survey (SPOES), multiple regression analyses revealed that physical elements collectively predict both satisfaction and collaboration. The final simplified model showed …

A Green Concrete Mixture Using Rice Husk As Partially Cement Replacement, Khloud Khalid Eldamshiry, Zeina Salama, Amany Micheal, Rania Rushdy Moussa, Ayatallah Raafat
Architectural Engineering
Egypt's agricultural waste production has increased significantly in recent decades, leading to improper disposal methods and environmental pollution. Rice husks are the most common agricultural solid waste in Egypt, contributing to "black clouds" and causing health issues. On the other hand, Cement, a crucial component of construction materials, generates unsound residues and greenhouse gas emissions. Green concrete with rice husks could be a profitable solution for environmentally sound construction, reducing cement consumption and increasing the durability and integrity of new materials. This study investigates the use untreated rice husk fibres with a concrete mixture, avoiding burning and contributing to environmental …
Shared Kitchens Changing The Housing Development, Agniya Seliuzhytskaya
Shared Kitchens Changing The Housing Development, Agniya Seliuzhytskaya
McNair Summer Research Program
In response to the escalating housing crisis and ongoing economic disruptions, many individuals have turned to home-based food entrepreneurship as a means of financial stability. The Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) program enables residents to legally operate small-scale food businesses from their private kitchens, effectively blurring the line between domestic and commercial space. This research investigates how MEHKOs challenge conventional understandings of housing, domesticity, and zoning, and considers how shared or adaptable kitchen models might inform emerging housing typologies.
The study combines spatial and policy analysis by mapping the distribution of approved MEHKO sites in San Diego and overlaying that …

Future Interior Of The Past: An Air Terminal Comes Of Age At Detroit-Willow Run, Joss Kiely
Future Interior Of The Past: An Air Terminal Comes Of Age At Detroit-Willow Run, Joss Kiely
Interiority
After the Second World War, manufacturing plants were no longer needed for wartime production levels, prompting the closure and repurposing of industrial facilities that became obsolescent overnight across the United States and in the manufacturing region of Southeastern Michigan. Located twenty miles west of Detroit, the Willow Run airfield in Ypsilanti was one such case. Best known for the massive B-24 Liberator manufacturing plant designed by Albert Kahn that opened in 1942 as Air Force Plant 31, the airfield played a key role in ending the war. Just to the south, a Kahn-designed hangar was loosely repurposed in 1946–1947 as …
Flex-Spatialities: Interior Spaces, Play, And Fantasy, Camilo Lozano-Rivera
Flex-Spatialities: Interior Spaces, Play, And Fantasy, Camilo Lozano-Rivera
Interiority
This article examines how interior spaces in the digital age have evolved into flexible, adaptive environments shaped by technological mediation and shifting everyday practices. Focusing on smart homes and home offices, this article introduces the concept of flex-spatiality to describe how these spaces continually reconfigure in response to changes in needs and digital interfaces. Grounded in Gregory Bateson’s (1972) theory of play and fantasy, the study explores how interior spatiality operates on two levels: as a locus for expressing identities and as a structure for organising social interaction. Through Bateson’s distinction between metalinguistic and metacommunicative functions, flex-spatiality is framed as …

Interior Ecology Of Rural Houses In Çamlıhemşin, İrem Karadeniz Dündar, Tülay Zorlu
Interiority
Rural houses form a significant part of the rural architectural heritage, showing the region's lifestyle in their spatial organisation, types of spaces, and interior furnishings. This study examines the spatial characteristics of rural houses in Çamlıhemşin from the perspective of ecosophy, Guattari's (2005) approach of emphasising the reciprocity and intertwining of social, mental, and environmental ecologies. The impact of living culture on the spatial organisation and residential usage norms within the dwellings was evaluated and elucidated through an analysis of data gathered from on-site surveys, relevant literature, and archival scans. These data are interpreted according to the different characteristics and …
Interior As Ecosystem, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interior As Ecosystem, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interiority
The idea of interior as an ecosystem views the emergence of interior as a dynamic and relational environment. Rather than viewing the interior as a static or enclosed environment, the ecological perspective considers the interior as an ecosystem, constructed by the systems of relations that involve a multiplicity of actors and entities. This issue of Interiority presents the emergence of various interior occupation and adaptation models that have emerged as an integral part of the ecosystem. The collection of articles in this issue presents a range of cases, ranging from traditional, modern, to contemporary lifestyles and contexts. The works demonstrate …
Feeling At Home Outdoors: The Courtyard Of The Rozes House, Marta García-Casabán
Feeling At Home Outdoors: The Courtyard Of The Rozes House, Marta García-Casabán
Interiority
Although the courtyard was not a central element in the early stages of the Modernist movement, it later became a key transitional space between the interior and the exterior. This concept was reinterpreted in Spain through a balance between modernity and tradition, particularly in holiday homes along the Costa Brava. This research explores the role of the outdoor room in modern Mediterranean architecture and its relationship with the environment, using José Antonio Coderch's Rozes House as a case study. Through redrawing, the text aims to analyse how the 'outdoor room' in Rozes House enhances spatial continuity and strengthens the relationship …
Family Homemaking Tactics In Tyneside Flats: Contemporary Interpretations Of Victorian Domestic Interior, Heba Sarhan, Rosie Parnell
Family Homemaking Tactics In Tyneside Flats: Contemporary Interpretations Of Victorian Domestic Interior, Heba Sarhan, Rosie Parnell
Interiority
This study addresses the gap between knowledge of adaptable design and the socio-spatial practices within the interior spaces of contemporary domestic settings. The aim is to support the sustainability of residential environments by enhancing the adaptability of dwellings to changing and diverse home life needs. Consequently, this paper delves into design features that enhance the adaptability of interior domestic spaces, informed by everyday family homemaking processes. Through a case study of the Tyneside flat, this paper illustrates challenges of transitioning this flat from Victorian to contemporary family home. Drawing on data gathered using multimodal methods, the findings demonstrate homemaking tactics …
Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk
Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk
Interiority
Interior design has traditionally prioritised human experiences, often neglecting ecological and nonhuman perspectives on interiority. This anthropocentric focus limits the discipline's ability to address the spatial and sensory needs of nonhuman persons, including teleost fishes. It overlooks interiority as a universal and relational phenomenon shared by all living beings. This research challenges these boundaries by proposing a biosemiotic framework that integrates the body, interiority, and inhabitation as interdependent constructs shaped by physiological, mental, and environmental interactions. By developing Jakob von Uexküll's (1982) biosemiotic schema, the study investigates the sentient experiences of teleost fishes to establish interiority as a capability inherent …

Revisiting The Post-Tsunami Aceh School: A Community-Based Evaluation Framework For Improving Build Back Better Projects, Muhammad Naufal Fadhil, Aji Sofiana Putri, Muhammad Fadli Muslimin
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
This study proposes a community-based evaluation framework to assess and improve the existing conditions of post-tsunami schools based on the occupants’ evaluations. Rapid, donor-driven reconstruction often defaults to ‘fit-for-all’ solutions that bypass community needs, resulting in facilities that are misaligned with local contexts. This project focused on Lampageu State Elementary School in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, which was reconstructed in 2009 by a German NGO after the 2004 tsunami. The project began by observing the school’s physical condition through the community engagement team, followed by a review and exploration of the school’s design needs with the school community. The community-based evaluation …

Through a qualitative analysis of multiple case studies from various regions, it is found that offices using sustainable materials, like low-emission paints and natural fiber insulation, showed a 30% improvement in IAQ compared to traditional settings. Additionally, essential criteria are identified for selecting sustainable materials, such as embodied energy and local sourcing. The findings offer practical recommendations for designers …
Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu
Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu
Masters Theses
With the rapid development of urbanization in China, people's connection with nature has weakened, leading to an increasingly common phenomenon of nature-deficit disorder. The high-paced, information-saturated lifestyle of cities has further reduced people’s sensitivity to natural rhythms. This is especially true for the younger generation, who are accustomed to fast, dense information flows and find it difficult to slow down and engage meaningfully with nature, even when visiting rural areas.
This study uses the ruins of Puji Temple, located about 50 miles from downtown Beijing, to explore how spatial design can offer urban youth opportunities to reconnect with nature while …
Cohabitation At Threshold: Carpenter House Reimagined For Multispecies Living, Zhixiao Yang
Cohabitation At Threshold: Carpenter House Reimagined For Multispecies Living, Zhixiao Yang
Masters Theses
With the rapid growth of the human population, we are encroaching further into wildlife habitats, particularly those surrounding urban environments. This accelerating urbanization leads to biodiversity loss, the degradation of ecological services essential to human health and well-being, and a diminishing connection between city dwellers and the natural world.
Today, urban planners, architects, economists, and other advocates for the future of humanity and the health of the planet are actively questioning how we might build greener, more resilient cities. While much of the focus has been on large-scale interventions — such as the use of sustainable materials, the creation of …
Unseen, But There, Xinyu Dong
Unseen, But There, Xinyu Dong
Masters Theses
Pedestrians often arrive at the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge in a hurry—rushing through daily routines—only to slow down or stop at its center. Here, they are drawn by the openness of the view, the rhythm of the wind, and a sense of pause that floats above the surface of the Providence River.
This thesis is an ongoing experiment in direct, sensory experience. It centers on this pedestrian bridge not just as a site of circulation, but as a space of unintentional stillness and layered perception. While many passersby are drawn to its scenic beauty, few pause to consider …

Buddha, Resituated, Min Sun
Masters Theses
The Asian Arts Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art presents significant cultural artifacts in a minimalist, neutral environment that disconnects them from their original historical and spatial contexts. By proposing display techniques that emphasize the origin and background of objects, it asks whether audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds can be enabled to connect empathetically with and learn from the heritage represented by these objects displayed out of context.
This thesis explores how exhibition design can reframe decontextualized artifacts to restore cultural meaning. By unpacking the room chronologically and geographically, and drawing from the spatial language of the Yungang Grottoes, …
Stranded In Time: Reawakening The Crook Point Bascule Bridge Through Temporality, Zhipeng Wang
Stranded In Time: Reawakening The Crook Point Bascule Bridge Through Temporality, Zhipeng Wang
Masters Theses
Many urban structures fall into a “stranded” state—physically present, yet socially invisible. The Crook Point Bridge in Providence is a prime example: a decommissioned piece of industrial infrastructure, too large and symbolically heavy to vanish entirely, yet gradually fading from public awareness. This thesis explores how temporary, experience-driven interventions can reawaken the social relevance of such neglected spaces. Rather than proposing a fixed future, the project seeks to prompt public reconsideration through fleeting spatial experiences that require no irreversible transformation. The first intervention utilizes balloons—fragile, inflated, and inevitably collapsing—to embody the theme of accelerated disappearance, echoing how memories fade faster …
Silent Witnesses: Reconnecting Landscape Through Lost Narratives, Abeer Aljohani
Silent Witnesses: Reconnecting Landscape Through Lost Narratives, Abeer Aljohani
Masters Theses
In the heart of the vast Arabian desert, a forgotten tale of tragic love unfolds. Aja and Salma, figures from two different tribes in pre-Islamic Arabia, embody a romance that has long faded into obscurity. The two mountain ranges in Hail, Saudi Arabia, bear their names, standing as silent witnesses to a love story that ends in tragedy—one in which each is killed on separate peaks. Over time, the story has faded, leaving a gap between the landscape and its cultural significance. Could a narrative-based tourism experience revive this link, blending the mountains’ natural beauty with their forgotten story?
This …
A Seat At The Table: Expanding The Narrative Of Period Rooms, Jade Mcpike
A Seat At The Table: Expanding The Narrative Of Period Rooms, Jade Mcpike
Masters Theses
A period room represents the interior design and decorative art of a particular historical social setting, typically found in museums. Unlike the white cube gallery, period rooms offer immersive spaces that provide visitors a glimpse into domestic life and the experiences of those who lived in that moment. Stepping into a period room is like traveling back in time, where every piece of furniture and decoration tells us something about the past.
However, despite their immersive qualities, these rooms often lack broader historical context, misrepresenting socio-economic, political, and cultural dynamics of the periods they attempt to depict. They often glorify …
Looped Logic & Wild Lines, Shuting Shao
Looped Logic & Wild Lines, Shuting Shao
Masters Theses
What if an exhibition didn’t just present objects but actively pulled visitors into their world? This thesis explores that possibility by reimagining how furniture can be exhibited, using Misha Kahn’s All Tied Up Chair and Michael Thonet’s No. 14 Bentwood Chair as case studies. These two works sit at opposite ends of the design spectrum—Kahn’s chair is an explosion of color, texture, and playful chaos, while Thonet’s is an icon of industrial efficiency and graceful simplicity. Through spatial design, this exhibition translates their contrasting philosophies into immersive environments that extend beyond mere observation. The conventional use of neutral “White Cube” …
Post Salt: Adaptive Architecture For An Uncertain Climate, Mallorie Beckner
Post Salt: Adaptive Architecture For An Uncertain Climate, Mallorie Beckner
Masters Theses
Climate change is rapidly altering seasonal patterns, particularly in the Northeastern U.S., where winter temperatures have risen by approximately 3°F over the past century. As a result, infrastructure designed to support communities during winter conditions, such as road salt storage facilities, faces obsolescence. New York State, the largest consumer of road salt in North America, has 40 salt storage facilities in New York City alone, all of which are sited along interconnected waterways. Though often overlooked, this network of structures forms a critical part of the city’s response to winter weather. As these structures face a paradigm shift, their future …
The Afterlife Of Walls / Reimagining The Museum Beyond Possession, Bensu Girgin
The Afterlife Of Walls / Reimagining The Museum Beyond Possession, Bensu Girgin
Masters Theses
When artifacts are returned, whether to their original sites or to communities with enduring cultural and ancestral ties, what might museums become in their absence? Once defined by possession, these spaces could shift toward empathy: not through institutional authority, but through shared presence and living memory.
This thesis critiques how Eurocentric museum practices have long sustained a colonial logic by detaching artifacts from the cultural, spiritual, and embodied contexts that gave them meaning. In doing so, museums render objects static, symbols of conquest rather than continuity, and reinforce historical narratives rooted in domination and erasure. Centering the British Museum as …
