Between Partiality And Wholeness In Architecture, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET
This edition of ARSNET reconsiders part-whole relations in the architectural design process. The articles in this study show how parts and whole can be dependent on, or independent of, each other. This edition expands how parts can be understood in architecture, as objects, broken parts, sequential layers, or material traces. This variation then leads to creative techniques to reveal or reconstruct the whole through collages, tracings, and narrative approaches. Through such inquiry, the architectural whole emerges in more complex ways, existing through narratives of sequences, created from localised interactions, and ever evolving across scales and temporalities. By looking at multiple …
Collaging Stickers: Revealing Objects' Relational Interiority, Mochammad Mirza Yusuf Harahap
Collaging Stickers: Revealing Objects' Relational Interiority, Mochammad Mirza Yusuf Harahap
ARSNET
This paper proposes a methodological approach to learning about an object's interiority, embracing two schools of thought that largely revolve around the study of objects: one that concerns the object's substance, and the other that concerns the object's relationality. In particular, the study sees an opportunity to reveal object's relationality through a deep understanding of the object's substance. In achieving the objective, the presented study found a resonating notion in the concept of interiority, which is understood as an inward-outward dialectic. Thinking of object with interiority posits a process of disassembling object's substance for building inward awareness. This study further …
Designing The Misfit Through Re-Ordering Of Fragmented Materials, Mochammad Suva Nugraha
Designing The Misfit Through Re-Ordering Of Fragmented Materials, Mochammad Suva Nugraha
ARSNET
This study explores how architectural order can be shaped by misfit, focusing on the reuse of building-material fragments as a means of exploration. Existing discourse of architectural order aims to eliminate misfit to achieve the condition of fit. In architecture, misfits such as cracks, breaks, and irregularities are commonly treated as flaws requiring correction. Nevertheless, certain construction practices may enable transformation of these misfits into design opportunities. This study qualitatively examines the use of broken floor tiles at Wisma Kuwera, Semarang, Central Java, to investigate how material misfit can be designed into architectural order. Data were collected through field observations, …
The Staging Grounds Of Architecture, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
The Staging Grounds Of Architecture, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET
The articles in this edition of ARSNET offer various design explorations that investigate the idea of staging as the creative grounds of architecture. This edition discusses different design inquiries that aim to redefine the act and spatiality of staging, beyond the context of a space for performance. Explorations elaborated in this edition outline alternative design approaches, which focuses on the dynamic curation of spaces and celebrates the unscripted and unintentionality of its experiences. Such approaches range from the utilisation of various representation techniques to reveal the multidimensionality of architecture, construction of spatial experiences that juxtaposes and connect spaces dynamically, and …
Liquid Modernity Off-Modernity: A Pop-Up Interior In The Middle Of Nowhere, Ayman Kassem
Liquid Modernity Off-Modernity: A Pop-Up Interior In The Middle Of Nowhere, Ayman Kassem
ARSNET
This visual essay examines the pop-up desert café as a contemporary interior condition shaped by mobility, reversibility, and performative occupation. Framed through Bauman’s (2000) liquid modernity and Branzi’s (2002) diffuse modernity, it argues that temporary desert setups are not informal exceptions but design responses to unstable, event-based ways of living. The essay reads the pop-up as a hybrid interior-exterior assemblage, where carpets, furniture, lighting, signage, and social rituals produce atmosphere and collective presence. Using collages on photography taken by the author-co-created with architect Moustafa Abdulwahed—as a method, the visual essay journey moves from photographic observation to extraction and speculative recomposition, …

This study discusses the design development of a sustainable workplace interior, using PITA office—a furniture company in Indonesia—as the context of study. The design aims to create a sustainable office environment that reflects the company's commitment to sustainability, particularly in relation to various interior material practices. This study applies Nirmal Kishnani's six principles of sustainable design within the Asian context to the interior design of the PITA office, encompassing the principles of efficacy, ecology, wellness, embeddedness, advocacy, and integration. A qualitative approach was implemented through observation, documentation, and interviews to analyse the context based on the six sustainable design principles …
