It is important to understand the different types of house museums and their purposes before we offer information about our own house museum.

There are three basic types of house museums: Documentary, Representative, Decorative. Each type has its purpose and distinct interpretive thrust.

Having very little information about the Felts family, it is impossible to present our museum as the documentary Felts House. A much more realistic interpretive goal is as a representative 1815 Log House. Interior Design Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Lincoln, Nebraska, resident Eloise Andrews Kruger began collecting 1:12 scale miniatures in the late 1930s. Over the course of fifty years, her dedication to acquiring historically accurate pieces led to the development of one of the most impressive miniature collections in the country. Ms. Kruger’s collection of miniature furniture, decorative arts and accessories, and architectural elements represents nearly all the major English and American design styles from the Renaissance through the Early Modern period. The collection includes the work of top miniature artists including Eric Pearson, Eugene Kupjack, Bob Carlisle, Warren Dick, Mell Prescott, and Betty Valentine.

After having learned, during the course of my studies in interior design, about the methodology of biophilic design (literally, “life-loving”)—which deals with the human psychological affinity for the natural world and attempting to reconcile that with the built environment, in order to create spaces that protect both body and mind—I wanted to experiment within that philosophy, to build my own biophilic design skills. Political Renewal And Architectural Revival During The French Regency: Oppenord's Palais-Royal, Jean-François Bedard

Author links Oppenord's 'revivalist' attitude to the politics of his patron, Philippe II, duc d'Orleans, regent of France between 1715 and 1723. The author uses eight drawings by Oppenord, acquired by the Carnavalet in 1999, as well as others known, to show how the Palais-Royal and its apartments were transformed to be a surrogate Versailles. Includes a checklist of drawings and prints by and after Oppenord for the Palais-Royal (1713-1723).

The article presents information on academic libraries that can create a user-centered learning space for library users with limited resources. It notes that students desire user-centered facilities that encourage learner participation and social engagement. It reveals the findings of an online open-ended survey which investigated the needs of library users. Information is given on some of the ways accomplished at minimum cost including, reuse furniture, reuse more furniture, rearranging furniture, and adding some color to the facility.

The first train stations were built more than 150 years ago. Their floor plans both developed from and were informed by circulation requirements arising from the need to move passengers and trains safely and efficiently. While the prominent route of movement through stations was largely determined by their layout, certain architectural elements appeared in many stations regardless of their plans. Many of these features first appeared in response to functional needs but later acquired symbolic significance, transforming them into railway iconography. The resulting iconography not only helped distinguish train stations from other types of architecture but enhanced the legibility of …

This research project used quantitative research method to evaluate interior designers' and interior design students' perceptions about CAD (computer aided design) in interior design. Survey method was used to collect data about demographics, perceptions regarding CAD use, difficulties with its use, and expectations of CAD in near future. Descriptive analysis was used to summarize data from self-administered questionnaires for students and interior designers.

This essay traces the evolution of themed environment design from theme parks to a series of new architectural types – Urban Entertainment Destinations, Lifestyle Enhancement Centers, and Lifestyle Villages – as a chronicle of spatial mediation from urban décor to urban design technique. Culled partly through semiotic deconstruction and partly through ethnographic investigation, this history examines the environmental design techniques employed in these spaces in order to better understand the relationship of design practice to the cultural practices of work and leisure.

In addition, poor indoor air quality contributes to deterioration of employee health and well-being, which further reduces productivity.

Profound effects of global warming, species extinction, pollution of air and water, resource depletion, and population growth demand that India, the second most populated country in the world, address the need for ecological responsibility. This phenomenological study explored awareness and perceptions of green/sustainable (G/S) design in India’s design community. Architects in the five geographic regions were interviewed. All were familiar with S/G design and said knowledge was “very important.” However, none felt “well-versed.” They believed lack of client awareness (49%) and materials (28%) were the major problems encountered. A Conceptual Plan For The Detroit Book And Tower Building: Exploration Of The Conjunction Of Historic Preservation And Sustainable Design Concepts, Chi-Ying Luo

This conceptual project generated an adaptive reuse proposal for the Book and Tower Building in a registered historic district. Louis Kamper designed the thirteen-story Book Building in 1917, in the Beaux Arts style, to create elite shops and offices. In 1926 the thirty-six-story Tower Building extended the leaseable space. This proposal preserved and rehabilitated the historic features in the lobby area and renovated the retail spaces. An Asian Café was designed to contrast, but blend with, the Beaux Arts style. The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation were followed in the lobby area so as to make the renovation …
