Designed Physical Environments As Related To Selves, Symbols, And Social Reality: A Proposal For A Humanistic Paradigm Shift For Architecture, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni
Designed Physical Environments As Related To Selves, Symbols, And Social Reality: A Proposal For A Humanistic Paradigm Shift For Architecture, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni
Sociology Faculty Research
In this paper we will begin by briefly describing the concept of self, proceed by discussing the symbolic significance of physical environment, then describe as well as propose a humanist paradigm which we believe should be employed in architectural theory and practice, and finally discuss how the shift to a humanistic paradigm might be accomplished.
Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni
Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni
Sociology Faculty Research
Architectural sociology examines how architectural forms are both the cause and effect of sociocultural phenomena. As illustration of both but especially the former relationship, we could examine the role of architecture in the creation of contemporary Las Vegas, a city that has experienced almost unparalleled growth in residents (1.4 mil.) and tourists (35 mil.annually) since 1990. We consider the postmodern characteristics of Las Vegas and architecture’s role in creating this image.

The Politics Of Traditional Contemporary Buildings, Marwan Ghandour
The Politics Of Traditional Contemporary Buildings, Marwan Ghandour
Marwan Ghandour
This paper surveys contemporary Buildings in Lebanon that incorporate traditional Elements, as a way to deconstruct possible meanings of this dominant practice in contemporary Lebanese Architecture. I will start by discussing what is meant by tradition in relationship to building activity in Lebanon and what issues do these buildings engage. Then I will move to discuss the production of the Traditional in architectural practice. I will conclude by looking at "traditional" Contemporary buildings as thlngs around which social relations are problematized.

Architecture Of The Popham Colony, 1607-1608: An Archaeological Portrait Of English Building Practice At The Moment Of Settlement, Peter H. Morrison
Architecture Of The Popham Colony, 1607-1608: An Archaeological Portrait Of English Building Practice At The Moment Of Settlement, Peter H. Morrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From August 1607 to summer or fall 1608, the Popham Colony was established on what is now known as Hossketch Point, in Popham Beach, Maine. Rediscovered in 1994, the archaeological remains of the colony are providing insights into one of England's earliest colonial efforts in North America. Among the most exciting hds, are features relating to early seventeenth-century English building practices. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of the colony's six meter wide by twenty meter long storehouse, the "Admiral's howse," one of two apparently connected buildings, the buttery general or the Corporal's house; and what has tentatively been identified as the …
A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert
A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
The Benedictine Abbey is a product of medieval thought and society; for centuries its architecture signified the cosmology and spirituality not only of the order but also of a widely accepted Christian worldview. Through the design of a Meditation Chapel for the Benedictine Abbey of Subiaco at Paris, Arkansas, this project explored the cultural meaning and technical execution of contemporary sacred architecture. Nearly a millennium ago, the skin and bones of Gothic structure and stained glass represented a sacred ideal. In the contemporary context, however, this research probed the possibilities of using systems (interior and exterior), particularly the design of …
Legacies In Brick And Mortar: The Life And Works Of Charles Thompson, Tilly Carter
Legacies In Brick And Mortar: The Life And Works Of Charles Thompson, Tilly Carter
Honors Theses
Many masterpieces go unnoticed by the public. Men will design works of art which clearly prove their talent and craftsmanship, but the buildings are overlooked and left to wither away with age. Architecture reflects not only the talents of those who design and construct buildings; it also serves as a historical record. A building reflects the romantic notions of the period while looking to the future and revealing a promise of progress. Some structures become so significant to their surroundings because of their endurance, character and historical prominence, that they assume a notable respect within the community and state. This …

The Neighborhood Concept: A Retrospective Of Physical Design And Social Interaction, Nicholas Patricios
The Neighborhood Concept: A Retrospective Of Physical Design And Social Interaction, Nicholas Patricios
Nicholas Patricios
In 1929 the neighborhood concept was published separately in two forms. First was the neighborhood idea of Clarence Stein and Henry Wright, exemplified in their plan for Radburn. Second was the Neighborhood Unit idea of Clarence Perry. Since then, for the past seven decades, the concept has been applied and adapted internationally. Over this period the concepts original principles of neighborhood physical design, in both its forms, have varied with little controversy. What has been and is still an issue is the nature of the relationship between the neighborhood's physical arrangement and the social interaction among its residents. The conceptual …
Urban Design Principles Of The Original Neighborhood Concepts, Nicholas Patricios
Urban Design Principles Of The Original Neighborhood Concepts, Nicholas Patricios
Nicholas Patricios
The neighbourhood concept is arguably one of the major planning landmarks that shaped the urban form of the twentieth century city in many countries. Coincidently, both the neighbourhood idea of Clarence Stein and Henry Wright, exemplified in their plan for Radburn, and the Neighbourhood Unit idea of Clarence Perry were published in 1929. The urban design principles of Stein and Wright included the idea of a superblock of residential units grouped around a central green, the separation of vehicles and pedestrians, and a road hierarchy with culs-de-sac for local access roads. A cluster of superblocks was to form a self-contained …
