Engineering is becoming increasingly cross-disciplinary, requiring students to develop skills in multiple engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical engineering students having to learn the basics of electronics, instrumentation, and coding) and interprofessional skills to integrate perspectives from people outside their field. The constant evolution of data centers and high-power electronic systems has raised critical challenges in heat dissipation and thermal management. Single-phase immersion cooling, where electronic components are submerged in a thermally conductive but non-electrically conductive liquid (dielectric liquid), offers improved heat dissipation capabilities and emerges as a promising alternative to traditional air-cooling methods, which often fail to meet the thermal demands of densely packed, high-power systems. The shadowgraphy imaging technique was adapted to analyze the droplet field from a spray nozzle inside the gas absorption section of a compact column gas scrubber. This technique in conjunction with a developed image processing technique was able to gain statistical size information at different distances from two types of spray nozzles. The gas scrubber then ran a parametric campaign of eight operating conditions and statistical size information was captured for each case with the goal of understanding how operating conditions affect the droplet field properties.
