Flaked spindle-like CuO nanocrystals were successfully used to modify a GC electrode to detect H2O2 with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometric (AC).The results showed that products were pure monoclinic CuO nanocrystals. The linear range for the determination of hydrogen peroxide is from 1.0 …

Journal of Electrochemistry

TiO2 was used as the support for preparation of Pt/WC/TiO2 composite catalyst. The composites were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM methods. The electrocatalytical activity of Pt/WC/TiO2 composite for oxidation of methanol was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor-Compatible Detector Materials With Enhanced 1550 Nm Responsivity Via Sn-Doping Of Ge/Si(100), Richard T. Beeler, Jay Mathews, Mee-Yi Ryu, Yung-Kee Yeo, Jose Menendez, John Kouvetakis

Faculty Publications

Previously developed methods used to grow Ge1−ySny alloys on Si are extended to Sn concentrations in the 1019−1020 cm−3 range. These concentrations are shown to be sufficient to engineer large increases in the responsivity of detectors operating at 1550 nm. The dopant levels of Sn are incorporated at temperatures in the 370–390 °C range, yielding atomically smooth layers devoid of threading defects at high growth rates of 15–30 nm/min. These conditions are far more compatible with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processing than the high growth and processing temperatures required to achieve the same …

The experiment was part of the Intermetallic Materials Processing in Relation to Earth and Space Solidification (IMPRESS) EU FP6 project. Key objectives were to investigate columnar and equiaxed solidification, and to achieve Columnar-to-Equiaxed Transition (CET) in the alloy. A microgravity experiment was designed to achieve this using a controlled power-down method. Two alloys were tested: one inoculated with a grain refiner and the other without grain refinement. Unrefined samples displayed axial and radial columnar growth. Boride inoculated samples displayed …

Characterization And Implementation Of Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound As A Tool To Apply Physical Load To Scaffolds And Bone Cells For Fracture Repair, Scott Frazee 2011 UConn

Characterization And Implementation Of Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound As A Tool To Apply Physical Load To Scaffolds And Bone Cells For Fracture Repair, Scott Frazee

Master's Theses

One current challenge in treating bone fractures is the effective treatment of non-unions and delayed unions. Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) has been approved by the FDA to treat fresh fractures since 1994 and non-unions since 2000 and is an attractive treatment option because it is non-invasive. The mechanism by which it works, however, is not well understood; what is known is largely confined to the resultant changes in chemical output of cells. In this thesis several concepts and techniques were brought together to investigate the following hypothesis: LIPUS produces a measurable physical load that results in measurable deformation and …

Plasmonic Effect On The Photoluminescence Of Inas Quantum Dot Nanostructures, David Fryauf

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

New materials for thin film photovoltaic applications are being explored worldwide, and one of the most popular new implementations is the introduction of an intermediate band gap in the semiconductor energy structure. Careful manipulation of semiconductor lattice material can form nanostructures such as quantum dots, which can be tuned to control specific intermediate energy levels. The introduction of an intermediate band in photovoltaic devices has a theoretical potential sunlight-toelectricity efficiency of roughly 63%. However, a specific material challenge of these thin film devices is limited absorption of long wavelengths of light. To increase absorption of the sun's visible spectrum, plasmonic …

Mechanical Properties Of Pecvd Boron Carbide, Dhairyashil Aher

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

To the best of our knowledge, the mechanical properties of PECVD boron carbide (BC) grown using ortho-carborane as a source molecule have never been investigated before. Therefore, this thesis is an attempt to apply the bulge test and the nanoindentation technique for the mechanical characterization of PECVD BC thin films. Mechanical properties such as the Young’s modulus, hardness and residual stress were investigated. The bulge test system using an interferometry technique to measure the deflection of membrane has been designed. Commercially available LPCVD SiNx membrane windows were used as a substrate to deposit BC films for the bulge test. …
