Accurate prediction of seismic performance of structures is important in reducing risks from earthquakes. Within the context of emerging performance-based earthquake engineering trends, seismic performance is measured with respect to the demand of engineering systems during a seismic event as opposed to the conventional factor of safety approach. Investigation of the correlation between so-called engineering demand parameters and various intensity measures has received substantial attention in earthquake engineering, as accurate prediction of seismic demand is desired in performance based seismic design. This paper summarizes geological, geophysical and seismological studies in two accepted and one candidate seismic zones in the central United States. The area was shaken by as many as 2,000 felt earthquakes in 1811-12, including four events greater than Magnitudes 7.0. These occurred before the area west of the Mississippi River was settled, so the intensity of shaking was not recorded over much of the affected region. Earthquakes in the central United States are felt over a much broader area than similar magnitude earthquakes in the western United States because of the low attenuation associated with undeformed Paleozoic age strata …

The paper presents an overview of recent advances in earthquake geotechnical engineering with respect to the seismic design of geotechnical structures. The modern principles in seismic design are described along the framework of performance-based design as adopted in the International Standard (ISO23469). With the growing awareness of the need to understand the effect of non-linearity in soils and soil-structure interaction, the paper discusses the highly non-linear response of ground during strong earthquake motions with a peak ground acceleration exceeding 1g, and the highly non-linear behavior of soil-pile interaction, including soil-pile separation. The interaction between a surface foundation and the supporting inelastic soil under the action of monotonic, cyclic, and seismic loading is studied numerically. The foundation supports an elastic tall system, the horizontal loading of which induces primarily an overturning moment and secondarily a shear force. Starting from linear elastic behavior, the footing eventually uplifts from the soil, provoking strong inelastic soil response culminating in development of a bearing–capacity failure mechanism and progressive settlement. The substantial lateral displacement of the pier mass induces an additional aggravating moment due to P–δ effect. A comparison is conducted between clean sand liquefaction charts based, respectively, on normalized point penetration resistance in CPT static cone tests (qc1N) and shear wave velocity (Vs1). Examination of the shape of these field-calibrated curves, review of the factors influencing liquefaction resistance in the laboratory, field correlations between qc1N and Vs1, and field and laboratory evidence related to some of the factors influencing cone penetration resistance and shear wave velocity in sands, are all used in the discussion. Although loess liquefaction is not very common during earthquakes in Northwest of China, it is disastrous if it happens. Both study and valid evidence from Haiyuan 8.5 Earthquake in 1920 and Tajikistan 5.9 Earthquake in 1989 have proved that loess liquefaction could be very disastrous under certain conditions. In this paper, the criterions of loess liquefaction are discussed to show that unlike typical liquefaction of sand, loess which falls into the category of both silt clay and clayey silt has unique characteristics during liquefaction test. Lateral load tests were performed on a full-scale pile cap in untreated clay along with pile groups involving (a) excavation and replacement with sand backfill, (b) a soilcrete wall along the side of the pile group, and (c) a jet grouted zone below the pile cap. The average compressive strength of the soft, plastic clay increased from an average of 50 kPa to an average of about 1000 kPa with soil mixing (10% cement) and to 3000 kPa with jet grouting (20% cement). Excavation and replacement only increased resistance by about 20%; however, the soil mixed wall increased resistance by …

Soil liquefaction following earthquakes leads to excessive damage to a wide variety of structures. Settlement and rotation of structures following liquefaction have been witnessed in many of the recent earthquakes. Investigation of the mechanisms of failure of structure when the foundation soil suffers either partial or full liquefaction is therefore very important. Dynamic centrifuge tests were conducted at Cambridge and elsewhere on different boundary value problems in which liquefaction of soil models was investigated. During the past five years, geotechnical earthquake engineering and ground deformation research has benefited from the advent of terrestrial LIDAR technology, a revolutionary tool for characterizing fine-scale changes in topography. For ground deformation research, LIDAR is particularly useful for characterizing the dimensions of failures and for monitoring subtle deformations through time. Tripod mounted LIDAR systems have accuracies of approximately 0.4-2.0 cm, and can illuminate targets up to one kilometer away from the sensor. During several minutes of LIDAR scanning, millions of survey position points are collected and processed into an ultra-high resolution terrain model. Recently middle class earthquakes have occurred and caused various geotechnical damages every year in Japan. Among them geotechnical damages during five earthquakes from 2004 to 2008 are introduced. The 2004 Niigataken-chuetsu earthquake caused failure of expressway embankments and uplift of sewage manholes. Liquefaction-induced damage to quay walls and tanks occurred in artificially reclaimed lands during the 2005 Fukuokaken-seiho-oki earthquake. Liquefiable area had been predicted about 17 years before the earthquake. Liquefied zones were fairly coincided with the predicted liquefiable zones. Very severe slide of highway embankments occurred at 11 sites during the 2007 Notohanto earthquake. During the 2007 Niigataken-chuetsu-oki earthquake, …

California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) initiated a seismic retrofit program in early 1990 following the Loma Prieta and Northridge Earthquakes to strengthen existing toll bridges and many regular bridges in California. Prior to the CALTRANS’ seismic retrofit program, there were very little guidelines and criteria available to undertake seismic retrofit of existing bridges and design of new structures to withstand potentially large magnitude future earthquakes. Significant advancements have been made since the beginning of the seismic retrofit program. Nonlinear earthquake analyzes of structures are increasingly required by building codes and other seismic design regulations. An essential component of these analyses is that the geotechnical engineer has to provide the structural engineer with a set of strong motion time histories, typically three or seven sets containing two orthogonal horizontal components, and one vertical component if needed. Based on a request by ENSI (Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Switzerland) to update the existing probabilistic earthquake hazard studies, Swissnuclear, the association of the nuclear power plants in Switzerland, initiated the PEAGASOS Project. The project started in 2001 and finished in 2004. It is for Europe a unique study, which aimed to evaluate uncertainties systematically and comprehensively. It was decided to perform the study on SSHAC-level 4. Level 4, defined by the Senior Seismic Hazard-Committee, is the highest level and was used only once before for the Yucca-Mountain-Project in the USA.
