Analyzing Stochastically Generated Material Properties For The Use In Mumerical Simulations Of Advanced Laboratory Tests Of Asphalt Concrete, Ken K. Rutabana
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
For such a large country as the US, adequate road transportation is a vital necessity that ensures the safety, prosperity, and development of the people. Covering 94% of the two million miles of paved roads and highways, asphalt concrete is essential to this country. This is one reason why it is crucial to understand the potential and limitations of asphalt concrete. Unfortunately, material testing is a costly and time consuming ordeal. Consequently, numerical modeling of asphalt testing using computer software has been successfully developed in the last decades. These models corroborate those obtained in the lab but are intended as …

Methodologies For Simplified Lifeline System Risk Assessments, Michael Germeraad
Master's Theses
Natural hazards are a growing risk across the globe. As regions have urbanized, single events impact greater proportions of the population, and the populations within those regions have become more dependent on infrastructure systems. Regional resilience has become closely tied to the performance of infrastructure. For a comprehensive risk assessment losses caused by lifeline outage must be considered alongside structural and nonstructural risks. Many well developed techniques quantify structural and nonstructural risk; however, there are insufficient procedures to determine the likelihood of lifeline outages. Including lifelines in seismic assessments will provide a comprehensive risk, improving a decision maker’s capacity to …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Stress State And Bond Strength Of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer/Concrete Interface To Boundary Conditions In Single Shear Pull-Out Test, Tayyebeh Mohammadi, Baolin Wan
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The bond between fiber-reinforced polymer and concrete substrate plays a key role in the performance of concrete structures after strengthened by externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials. The single shear pull-out test is generally used to determine the interface characteristics, and various bond–slip models have been proposed based on the results of this test. However, the sensitivity of the bond strength to the boundary conditions has not yet been considered in the available models in the literatures. This article presents an experimental and numerical study targeted at understanding the influence of the boundary conditions on the bond strength of the …

Bulbous Pier: Alternative To Bridge Pier Extensions, Amilcar Chavez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Bridge deck splashing causes deterioration to the bridge structure and renders the bridge unsafe for motorist and pedestrians. The traditional countermeasure for bridge deck splashing is pier extension, the pier extension moves the pier wave away from the bridge deck, but retrofitting existing bridges with pier extensions is costly. This research proposes the bulbous pier concept as an alternative to pier extension.
The decrease in the pier wave produced by the bulb is due to energy subtracted by the bulb via two forces, the viscous resistance, and the wave-making resistance. The proposed mathematical model for the bulbous pier design follows …

The Use Of Cod, Toc, Fluorescence, And Absorbance Spectroscopy To Estimate Biochemical Oxygen Demand In Wastewater, Evelyn Aramaine Christian
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
All wastewater treatment facilities must obtain a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, which regulates the quality of water that is discharged. Common to all NPDES permits is a limit on organic matter, as determined by the five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) test. More rapid methods, such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), fluorescence, and absorbance spectroscopy are also capable of quantifying organic matter. Previous studies indicate it is possible to develop correlations between these parameters. This study explored the correlations using influent, primary clarifier effluent, and finished effluent samples from an operational wastewater treatment plant …

Prediction Of Shear Strength And Ductility Of Cyclically Loaded Reinforced Concrete Columns Using Artificial Intelligence, Nicholas Gordon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The shear strength and deformation capacities of reinforced concrete (RC) columns are governed by a multitude of variables related to material properties of the steel and concrete used in the design and construction of the columns. Predicting performance of RC columns using design variables is a complex, non-linear problem. The prediction of shear strength and ductility for these types of structural members has historically been performed using empirically or semi-empirically derived formulae based on experimental results. The introduction of cyclical lateral loading, such as the forces imposed on a structure during an earthquake, can result in severe degradation of shear …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), a by-product from steel production, has been used as a partial replacement of portland cement in concrete for over a century. It constitutes a beneficial reuse of a by-product material, less consumption of portland cement concrete. Lower consumption of portland cement concrete can help reduce construction cost. Furthermore, it lowers the industrial carbon footprint, and landfill disposal which is a major environmental issue the world is facing today. The chemical composition of GGBF slag is similar to portland cement with hydraulic properties and additional pozzolanic properties with excellent alkali silica reactivity mitigation and resistance …

Structural Response Of Flexure-Deficient Reinforced Concrete Continuous Slabs Strengthened With Composites, Jwan Ahmad Al Khalil
Theses
Accidental reduction in the amount of steel in continuous reinforced concrete (RC) floor slabs is a typical problem that might occur due to an error in design, unclear drawings, or overlooked verification of reinforcement prior to concrete casting. Existence of such deficiencies would compromise the load capacity and serviceability of RC floor slabs. This research examines the effectiveness of using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) to improve the structural response of flexure-deficient continuous RC slab strips. The study comprised experimental testing and finite element (FE) modeling. Sixteen two-span RC slab strips, 400 x 125 x 3800 mm each, were tested. Test parameters …

Capacity Models For Multilane Roundabouts And Their Evaluation Using Microscopic Simulation Models, Mohamad A. Shrayteh
Theses
Compared to previous versions of the manual, the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 has provided more comprehensive capacity models for single and multilane roundabouts. The Highway Capacity Manual 2010 multilane roundabout capacity models are limited to two-by-two lanes, that is, two entry lanes and two circulating lanes. These capacity models are not valid for the three-by-three–lane roundabouts (three entry lanes and three circulating lanes) due to different traffic flow characteristics and features. This limitation of the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 model is also clearly mentioned in the manual. In this research, capacity models and curves were developed for three-by-three–lane roundabouts. A Study Of The Influence Of Particle Gradation In Bonded Assemblies, Matthew P. Watters
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The discrete element method (DEM) has been used extensively to study soil, rock, and masonry behavior because of its ability to model the materials as individual particles or bonded clumps of particles. DEM allows for examination of the macro- and micro-scale response and provides a means to study the fundamental material behavior, but it is still considered computationally expensive in relation to other methods. To lower computational costs, the smallest particle sizes are often considered negligible and are left out of the model. Additionally, rock or intact materials are often modeled as a bonded assembly of uniform spheres. To date, …
