Optimization Of Spacecraft Formations About Lagrange Points For The Next Generation Space Weather Prediction Mission, Roberto Cuéllar Rangel

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This thesis’s work serves as proof of concept for the Next Generation Space Weather Prediction Mission, a multi-spacecraft mission at various libration points whose objective is to forecast Space Weather hazards with a 12day warning time. This thesis deals with the design and control of orbits of spacecraft formations at different libration points. The systems studied are SunEarth, SunVenus, SunMercury, and SunMars. The orbit design and formation keeping control of the spacecraft are solved simultaneously using an optimization software called DIDO. Initial conditions are obtained through two different strategies. The first one, by placing the spacecraft in a tetrahedral formation …

Python Implementation Of Batch Least-Squares Filter For Satellite Orbit Determination, Austin Ogle 2020 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Python Implementation Of Batch Least-Squares Filter For Satellite Orbit Determination, Austin Ogle

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Accurate orbit determination techniques are fundamental to the maintenance and execution of any ongoing space-based mission. This project serves as a guide and demonstration of a batch sequential least-squares filter for Earth-orbiting satellites using exclusively open-source technologies. The target audience for this project was an academic institution aiming to keep track of an irregularly documented satellite. The observation function mimics a telescope, accepting right ascension and declination as measured values.

State propagation was handled using the Poliastro library. This package boasts FORTRANlevel speed by utilizing the DOPRI8 integrator, explicitly calling FORTRAN code. Matrix inversion was solved using the SciPy banded …

Development Of High-Density Propulsion System Technologies For Interplanetary Small Satellites And Cubesats, Morgan Andrew Roddy 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Development Of High-Density Propulsion System Technologies For Interplanetary Small Satellites And Cubesats, Morgan Andrew Roddy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to support the development of a novel propulsion system for small satellites (<180 kg) and CubeSats. This was pursued by conducting a collection of studies that were designed to provide engineering data that would be critical in designing a functional prototype. The novel propulsion system was conceived by the author to provide best-in-class performance for the small satellite and CubeSat families of spacecraft. This context presents specific design requirements that the presented technology attempts to satisfy. The most critical among these is high density; the propellant was designed to be stored with high density and the thruster was designed to be as compact as possible. The propulsion system is composed of two primary elements, a propellant generator and a thruster. The propellant generator works by sublimating a solid crystal into vapor and then using this vapor to etch a dense metal. The resulting gaseous byproducts of this reaction are the propellant. This dissertation used xenon difluoride (XeF2) vapor to etch tungsten (W) which react to form xenon gas (Xe) and tungsten hexafluoride (WF6). This approach gave a theoretical propellant storage density 5.40 g/cm3; and 5.17 g/cm3 was demonstrated. The sublimation dynamics of the XeF2 were studied as a function of surface area and temperature and it was found to be suitable for the intended application due to its high effluence rate; that is, it sublimates fast enough to be useful. The sublimation rates are on the order of 10’s of µg/s. The etch rate of XeF2 on W was also studied and found to be suitably fast to provide useful amounts of reactants for use as a propellant, again on the order of 1’s of µg/s. The thruster is an electrostatic radio frequency (RF) ion thruster design and is manufactured with Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (LTCC) materials system and manufacturing technology. Manufacturing samples of the thruster were built at the University of Arkansas in July 2015 and tested at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in May 2018. Testing validated the viability of the LTCC thruster and provided valuable information on how to improve the thruster’s design.

Design, Validation, And Verification Of The Cal Poly Educational Cubesat Kit Structure, Nicholas B. Snyder 2020 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Design, Validation, And Verification Of The Cal Poly Educational Cubesat Kit Structure, Nicholas B. Snyder

Master's Theses

In this thesis, the development of a structure for use in an educational CubeSat kit is explored. The potential uses of this kit include augmenting existing curricula with aspects of hands on learning, developing new ways of training students on proper space systems engineering practices, and overall contributing to academic capacity building at Cal Poly and its collaborators. The design improves on existing CubeSat kit structures by increasing accessibility to internal components by implementing a modular backplane system, as well as adding the ability to be environmentally tested. Manufacturing of the structure is completed with both additive (Fused Deposition Modeling …

Congressional Committee Resources On Space Policy During The 115th Congress (2017-2018): Providing Context And Insight Into Us Government Space Policy, Bert Chapman 2020 Purdue University

Congressional Committee Resources On Space Policy During The 115th Congress (2017-2018): Providing Context And Insight Into Us Government Space Policy, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy, which invite expert witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. Documentation produced by these committees is widely available to the public, …

On The Advantages Of The Disabled In Space., Samantha R. Timmers 2020 University of Louisville

On The Advantages Of The Disabled In Space., Samantha R. Timmers

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Since the start of the astronaut program in the 1960s, candidates have had to prove to be in prime physical shape before being granted clearance to fly, whereas those with physical disabilities such as blindness or deafness are automatically disqualified. The stigma that disabled persons are less qualified to succeed in a physically alien environment has persisted, though little research exists in revisiting the difficulties posed by allowing this group into the space program. This paper aims to reconsider the advantages and disadvantages of a disability-friendly space program, to include cost considerations, potential challenges, and the unique benefits posed by …

Nonlinear Least Squares 3-D Geolocation Solutions Using Time Differences Of Arrival, Michael V. Bredemann 2020 University of New Mexico

Nonlinear Least Squares 3-D Geolocation Solutions Using Time Differences Of Arrival, Michael V. Bredemann

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This thesis uses a geometric approach to derive and solve nonlinear least squares minimization problems to geolocate a signal source in three dimensions using time differences of arrival at multiple sensor locations. There is no restriction on the maximum number of sensors used. Residual errors reach the numerical limits of machine precision. Symmetric sensor orientations are found that prevent closed form solutions of source locations lying within the null space. Maximum uncertainties in relative sensor positions and time difference of arrivals, required to locate a source within a maximum specified error, are found from these results. Examples illustrate potential requirements …

Constrained Motion Analysis And Control Of Spacecraft Asteroid Hovering With Formulation Extension In Geometric Mechanics Framework, Wesley Thomas Stackhouse 2020 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Constrained Motion Analysis And Control Of Spacecraft Asteroid Hovering With Formulation Extension In Geometric Mechanics Framework, Wesley Thomas Stackhouse

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This thesis studies the constrained motion for a spacecraft hovering over an asteroid, where the Udwadia-Kalaba (UK) formulation is applied for nominal control, and an adaptive controller is developed to account for unknowns in the dynamics. Then, the formulation is extended in the geometric mechanics framework to account for rigid body spacecraft asteroid hovering. Constraints are developed and applied for fully constrained and under-constrained asteroid hovering. The fully constrained solutions provided by the UK fundamental equation are compared to an optimal linear quadratic regulator. An adaptive controller is designed using the UK fundamental equation as a basis in the form …

Dynamic And Control Of Air-Bearing Spacecraft Simulator, Jacob Joseph Korczyk 2020 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Dynamic And Control Of Air-Bearing Spacecraft Simulator, Jacob Joseph Korczyk

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

An air bearing is being designed as a spacecraft rotational motion simulator, featuring the Sawyer Robot and its control box. The objective is to maneuver the robot as desired, performing operations specific to on-orbit servicing operations while maintaining stability of the system. Before the control can be designed, the dynamics of the platform and the robot must be modeled. The dynamics of the robot can be derived utilizing a Newton-Euler recursive approach. By beginning with a simple pendulum, then adding links (degrees of freedom) to more closely resemble the Sawyer arm, the equations of motion for the robot can be …
