Neural Network Burst Pressure Prediction In Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels Using Mathematically Modeled Acoustic Emission Data, Junya Iizuka 2010 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Neural Network Burst Pressure Prediction In Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels Using Mathematically Modeled Acoustic Emission Data, Junya Iizuka

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this research was to predict burst pressures in composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) using mathematically modeled acoustic emission (AE) data. The AE data were collected during hydrostatic burst (hydroburst) testing often 15-inch (380 mm) diameter COP Vs. The data gathered during these tests were filtered in order to remove long duration hits, multiple hit data, and obvious outliers. Based on the duration, energy, and amplitude of the AE hits, the filtered data were classified into the various failure mechanisms of composites using a MATLAB based self-organizing map (SOM) neural network. Previous research has demonstrated that the parameters …

Investigation Of Scaling Effects For A Synthetic Jet Actuator Using High And Low Fidelity Analyses, Amandine Bourlier 2010 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Investigation Of Scaling Effects For A Synthetic Jet Actuator Using High And Low Fidelity Analyses, Amandine Bourlier

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This research presents an investigation on the scaling effects for synthetic jet actuators using Ansys-CFX and a Lumped Element Model (LEM). Synthetic jets or zero net mass-flux devices use a vibrating diaphragm to generate an oscillatory flow through a small orifice. A synthetic jet actuator can be used on MAVs as thrust generator or fixed on an airfoil for flow separation control. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was created, using Ansys-CFX, to be validated against referred publications. The use of mesh adaption is discussed. This baseline model was then used to complete a scaling analysis using a set of …

Defining An Abrasion Index For Lunar Surface Systems As A Function Of Dust Interaction Modes And Variable Concentration Zones, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus, Kenneth W. Street Jr. 2010 University of Colorado Boulder

Defining An Abrasion Index For Lunar Surface Systems As A Function Of Dust Interaction Modes And Variable Concentration Zones, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus, Kenneth W. Street Jr.

Publications

Unexpected issues were encountered during the Apollo era of lunar exploration due to detrimental abrasion of materials upon exposure to the fine-grained, irregular shaped dust on the surface of the Moon. For critical design features involving contact with the lunar surface and for astronaut safety concerns, operational concepts and dust tolerance must be considered in the early phases of mission planning. To systematically define material selection criteria, dust interaction can be characterized by two-body or three-body abrasion testing, and sub-categorically by physical interactions of compression, rolling, sliding and bending representing specific applications within the system. Two-body abrasion occurs when a …

Estimation Of Air Flow Angles Derived From An Inertial Navigation System, Brett Douglas Mather 2010 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Daytona Beach

Estimation Of Air Flow Angles Derived From An Inertial Navigation System, Brett Douglas Mather

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study is to explore the use of an Inertial Navigation System as a primary method for measuring aircraft air flow angles in flight testing. The traditional methods used to measure air flow angles consist of sensors external to the aircraft, such as an air data boom or an angle of attack probe. The advantage of using INS to measure air flow angles would be in the simplicity of the instrumentation. All components could be fixed internally, leaving minimal external modifications to the aircraft necessary for instrumentation. This would reduce costs and instrumentation time and enable air …

Optimization And Oscillation Of A Two-Dimensional Bump To Enhance Airfoil Performance, Dinesh Atchala

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this project is to improve the aerodynamic performance of an aircraft in transonic speed using a two dimensional contour bump. A natural laminar flow airfoil, RAE5243, has been chosen for the validation case to demonstrate the adequacy of the flow solver used in this study. 2D contour bump is parameterized as the bump position via airfoil, the crest position via bump, maximum height and length of the bump for the parametric study. After these studies, one of the gradient based optimization techniques is utilized to optimize the 2D bump parameters to achieve an augmentation in lift-to-drag …

Mission Performance As Point Performance, Robert A. McDonald 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Mission Performance As Point Performance, Robert A. Mcdonald

Aerospace Engineering

The cruise or loiter performance of an aircraft is intimately tied to its wing loading (W/S) and its thrust to weight ratio (T/W). Paradoxically, mission performance is often not considered when these fundamental aircraft parameters are determined in conceptual design. In this research, the traditional constraint diagram is extended to include contours of range parameter. This point performance metric represents the mission performance capability of the aircraft without sizing the aircraft to a particular mission. This gives the designer an immediate and intuitive understanding of the tradeoff between the point and mission performance of the aircraft. This improved constraint diagram …

Orbital Tori Construction Using Trajectory Following Spectral Methods, Ralph E. Bordner III 2010 Air Force Institute of Technology

Orbital Tori Construction Using Trajectory Following Spectral Methods, Ralph E. Bordner Iii

Theses and Dissertations

By assuming the motion of a satellite about the earth’s geopotential mimics the known Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) solution of a lightly perturbed integrable Hamiltonian system, this research focused on applying trajectory following spectral methods to estimate orbital tori from sampled orbital data. From an estimated basis frequency set, orbital data was decomposed into multi-periodic Fourier series, essentially compressing ephemerides for long-term use. Real-world Global Positioning System (GPS) orbital tracks were decomposed and reconstructed with error from as low as few kilometers per coordinate axis over a 10-week span to tens of kilometers per coordinate axis over the same time period, depending …

Exploring The Effects Of International Traffic In Arms Regulations Restrictions On Innovation In The U.S. Space Industrial Base, Kalliroi L. Landry 2010 Air Force Institute of Technology

Exploring The Effects Of International Traffic In Arms Regulations Restrictions On Innovation In The U.S. Space Industrial Base, Kalliroi L. Landry

Theses and Dissertations

The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) are used to protect United States (U.S.) military technologies. However, changes to ITAR export controls regarding space technologies have had a major impact to the U.S. space industry. The literature mentions a concern for the health of lower-tier firms because they are a major source of innovation, but there is no additional information considering the effects of ITAR on space innovation at those lower tiers. The purpose of this thesis was to explore the implications of continuing the current ITAR restrictions with regard to innovation in the space industry. This research used a …

Satellite Capabilities Mapping - Utilizing Small Satellites, David A. Grigsby 2010 Air Force Institute of Technology

Satellite Capabilities Mapping - Utilizing Small Satellites, David A. Grigsby

Theses and Dissertations

The cost and schedule advantages small satellites have over larger legacy systems have been studied, but there has been very little experimentation performed to determine whether small satellites can actually deliver the capabilities of larger spacecraft. To date, a desired operational capability has not been fully realized by a scalable satellite design. Advances in sensor technology have led to significant reductions in size, weight, and power (SWaP) presenting an opportunity to exploit the evolution of space operations by using small satellites to perform specific missions. This paper describes a methodology that maps a specific set of large space vehicle capabilities …

Uncertainty Quantification Integrated To Cfd Modeling Of Synthetic Jet Actuators, Srikanth Adya, Daoru Frank Han, Serhat Hosder

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Point-Collocation Non-intrusive Polynomial Chaos (NIPC) method has been applied to a stochastic synthetic jet actuator problem used as one of the test cases in the CFDVAL2004 workshop to demonstrate the integration of computationally efficient uncertainty quantification to the high-fidelity CFD modeling of synthetic jet actuators. The test case included the simulation of an actuator generating a synthetic jet issued into quiescent air. The Point-Collocation NIPC method is used to quantify the uncertainty in the long-time averaged u and v-velocities at several locations in the flow field due to the uniformly distributed uncertainty introduced in the amplitude and frequency of …

Stochastic Optimal Control In Nonlinear Systems, Celestin Nkundineza

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Stochastic control is an important area of research in engineering systems that undergo disturbances. Controlling individual states in such systems is critical. The present investigation is concerned with the application of the stochastic optimal control strategy developed by To (2010) and its implementation as well as providing computed results of linear and nonlinear systems under stationary and nonstationary random excitations. In the strategy the feedback matrix is designed based on the achievement of the objectives for individual states in the system through the application of the Lyapunov equation for the system. Each diagonal element in the gain or associated gain …

"Pull-In" Of A Pre-Stressed Thin Film By An Electrostatic Potential: A 1-D Rectangular Bridge And A 2-D Circular Diaphragm, Gang Duan, Kai Tak Wan 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

"Pull-In" Of A Pre-Stressed Thin Film By An Electrostatic Potential: A 1-D Rectangular Bridge And A 2-D Circular Diaphragm, Gang Duan, Kai Tak Wan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A one-dimensional (1-D) rectangular pre-stressed thin film clamped at two opposite ends is actuated by an electrostatic voltage applied to a pad directly underneath. the pre-stress is allowed to be either tensile or compressive in nature. at a critical applied voltage, the film becomes unstable and makes direct contact with the pad, leading to "pull-in". an elastic model is constructed to account for the phenomenon over ranges of film pad gap and residual stress. the results compare favorably with finite element analysis (FEA) in literature and experimental data and possess distinct advantages over other available closed-form solutions. the model is …

Parameter Estimation Of Fundamental Technical Aircraft Information Applied To Aircraft Performance, Michael Vallone 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Parameter Estimation Of Fundamental Technical Aircraft Information Applied To Aircraft Performance, Michael Vallone

Master's Theses

Inverse problems can be applied to aircraft in many areas. One of the disciplines within the aerospace industry with the most openly published data is in the area of aircraft performance. Many aircraft manufacturers publish performance claims, flight manuals and Standard Aircraft Characteristics (SAC) charts without any mention of the more fundamental technical information of the drag and engine data. With accurate tools, generalized aircraft models and a few curve-fitting techniques, it is possible to evaluate vehicle performance and estimate the drag, thrust and fuel consumption (TSFC) with some accuracy. This thesis is intended to research the use of aircraft …

An Investigation Of Damage Arrestment Devices Application With Fastener/Hole Interaction, Richard Vincent S. Balatbat 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

An Investigation Of Damage Arrestment Devices Application With Fastener/Hole Interaction, Richard Vincent S. Balatbat

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a parametric study on the effects of how damage arrestment devices application interacts with a fastener in a composite sandwich panel. The primary objective of the damage arrestment device was to prevent the failure of the composite face sheet, such as crack propagation, around the hole/fastener joint. The damage arrestment devices are made of composite strips that are inserted under the face sheet to increase the overall structural strength of the panel and to prevent the propagation of failure along the hole. This was supposed to be a quicker and stronger alternative to potted inserts for composite …
