State Of The Art Of Piloted Electric Airplanes, Nasa's Centennial Challenge Data And Fundamental Design Implications, Lori Anne Costello 2011 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

State Of The Art Of Piloted Electric Airplanes, Nasa's Centennial Challenge Data And Fundamental Design Implications, Lori Anne Costello

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the current state of the electric airplane as primarily defined by results from NASA's Green Flight Challenge Competition. New equations must be derived in order to determine the endurance and range for electric airplanes since the standard equations depend upon weight change over a flight and the weight of an electric airplane does not change. These new equations could then be solved for the optimal velocity and altitude which were the two driving factors that could change range and endurance for a given airplane configuration. The best velocity for range and endurance …

Experimental Investigation And Cfd Simulation Of Active Damping Mechanism For Propellant Slosh In Spacecraft Launch Systems, Dhawal Leuva 2011 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Experimental Investigation And Cfd Simulation Of Active Damping Mechanism For Propellant Slosh In Spacecraft Launch Systems, Dhawal Leuva

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Motion of propellant in the liquid propellant tanks due to inertial forces transferred from actions like stage separation and trajectory correction of the launch vehicle is known as propellant slosh. If unchecked, propellant slosh can reach resonance and lead to complete loss of the spacecraft stability, it can change the trajectory of the vehicle or increase consumption of propellant from the calculated requirements, thereby causing starvation of the latter stages of the vehicle. Predicting the magnitude of such slosh events is not trivial. Several passive mechanisms with limited operating range are currently used to mitigate the effects of slosh. An …

3d Cfd On An Open Wheel Race Car Front Wing In Ground Effects, Thomas A. Price

Aerospace Engineering

The purpose of the report is to investigate the ability of the Fluent 6.3 k-ε Realizable turbulence model with standard wall functions to model the flow around the front wing of Cal Poly’s 2008 Formula SAE car. The three primary areas of interest are ground effects, the wing wheel interaction, and the wing tip vortices. Fluent was successful at modeling the increase suction from the ground effects, and the upwash due to the wing tip vortices. The results also displayed how the high pressure region in front of the tire propagates forward and interacts with the pressure distribution around the …

Boundary Layer Measurements Related To Wind Tunnel Testing Of Riblets, Emrah Cinar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

With fuel economy being a significant factor in today's world of aviation, aircraft manufacturers have been looking into ways to decrease drag to save fuel. Drag reduction using riblets on wing and fuselage surfaces is . an area that has been studied extensively for the last two decades. In preparation for a larger project which will use several methods to simulate this phenomena, small scale research had to be done to find ways to generate similar conditions on scaled models in a low speed wind tunnel and examine boundary layer behavior.

In this project, boundary layer measurement techniques, such as …

Determination Of The Surface Boundary Layer Using A Quadrotor, Andrew Haviland 2011 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Determination Of The Surface Boundary Layer Using A Quadrotor, Andrew Haviland

Aerospace Engineering

Wind velocity data was taken by a quadrotor UAV using accelerometers, gyroscope, and a barometer. Data was taken at different altitudes over a single position to determine the boundary layer at the surface of the earth. The data taken was compared to the results from numerical methods to determine if this is a practice application for a quadrotor. A few weeks before the test was set to get underway, the quadrotor suffered a very hard crash while testing the GPS and altitude hold function and wasn’t able to completely recover from it. Theoretical results and experiment proposal are covered.

Design, Manufacturing And Testing Of An Environmentally-Green Bipropellant Thruster, Alex Bendoyro, Gabriel Sanchez, Erin Stearns, Phillip Takahashi

Aerospace Engineering

This project reviews the design, manufacturing and experimentation process of a green bi-propellant thruster designed to output 5 lbf. The goals were to successfully design, manufacture and test a thruster, while discovering the complications that arise through out the complete design process of a green thruster. The thruster was successfully designed using ideal rocket equations and the design was successfully confirmed using CFD and FEA. Manufacturing of the thruster was fully planned and revealed mild flaws in thruster design. For example some features were not manufacturable to the exact measurements desired. Testing of the engine gave results inconsistent with expected …

Imu Integration To The Cal Poly Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics Simulator Power System, Wayland Chan 2011 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Imu Integration To The Cal Poly Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics Simulator Power System, Wayland Chan

Electrical Engineering

The Cal Poly Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics Simulator mimics the rotation dynamics of a spacecraft in orbit and acts as a test bed for spacecraft attitude control system development and demonstration. Prior to this project, the simulator measured its attitude dynamics from a total of seven sensors mounted on to the platform, including three micro-electromechanical system (MEMs) gyroscopes, and four motor encoders. This project entails the installation of an LN-200 high performance gyroscope, which will provide a greater measure of accuracy. The goal of this project is to design a power circuit that will integrate the LN-200 inertial measurement unit onto …

Designing The Human-Powered Helicopter: A New Perspective, Gregory Hamilton Gradwell 2011 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Designing The Human-Powered Helicopter: A New Perspective, Gregory Hamilton Gradwell

Master's Theses

The concept of human-powered vertical flight was studied in great depth. Through the manipulation of preexisting theory and analytical methods, a collection of design tools was created to expediently conceptualize and then analyze virtually any rotor. The tools were then arranged as part of a complete helicopter rotor design process. The lessons learned as a result of studying this process—and the tools of which it consists—are presented in the following discussion. It is the belief of the author that by utilizing these tools, as well as the suggestions that accompany them, future engineers may someday build a human-powered helicopter capable …

Guidance, Navigation And Control Of A Fly-By-Wire Transport Category Airship Designed For Hover Cargo Delivery, Harshad H. Lalan

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to develop fly-by-wire pilot controls for a transport category airship propelled with six thrust vectoring engines, and to develop control laws to maintain position, heading, and attitude during hover and cargo operations. Owing to the large body area, most airships require that they be pointed into the wind to maintain their position. This research aims at controlling an airship attitude and position during hover cargo delivery, irrespective of the wind direction.

Control laws were developed for two primary modes of the airship: Flight (High Speed Mode) and Hover (Cargo Delivery Mode). Different sets of …
