Cry The Beloved Media: New Media And Student Perceptions In A World Literature Classroom, Timbre Janiece Newby Greenwood

This qualitative action research project addressed the infusion of media literacy and new media into a standard secondary English language arts curriculum. In examining students' perceptions of South Africa as they interacted with new media texts in conjunction with the traditional literary text Cry, the Beloved Country, this study also explored the manner in which students' media interactions informed their reading of the novel. As a result of the research data, the author asserts that media literacy education can, in fact, play an effective role in teaching literature within the world literature classroom.

‘Just Let Me Fly’ is a three act play by Jim McGovern. The underlying genre is tragedy with some dry humour and incidental music. The main theme is academic rivalry and the feeling of being repressed or bullied. The context is a department of aeronautical engineering at a university. Emeritus Professor, School of Theater Arts John Ficca taught full time in the School of Theater Arts from 1956-2002 and was also Director of the School of Theater Arts.

Ficca comments on entering the Army during the Korean War and his decisions about his education afterwards. He also speaks about the Theatre and Speech programs being part of the English Department at the start of his tenure and how the programs evolved afterwards.

Other memories include performances at different theaters on campus and invited guests; curricular requirements, including a Summer Theater; and changes in campus leadership, governance and institutional benefits.

In a production shaped by simultaneous realities (hospital and coma), the dreamiest jazz composer of our time, Fred Hersch, will debut a full-length work for 11 instruments (trumpet, trombone, clarinet/alto sax/bass clarinet, tenor sax/flute, string quartet, piano, bass, drums/percussion) as well as a speaker/singer. Inspired by the dreams he remembers after two months in a coma in 2008, Fred Hersch (Leaves of Grass), in collaboration with Herschel Garfein (Elmer Gantry librettist) and Sarah Wickliffe, will reveal the dark matter of his own life—and ours, too.

In this thesis, I will document the creative work I completed for my Senior Acting Project. I will also explore my Senior Acting Project from a more ‘conventional’ academic standpoint. I will explore various definitions of tragedy and argue my own definition; I will also investigate who Euripides was as a writer and human being. I will then apply my findings to three different versions of Euripides’ tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis: a classical translation, a more contemporary translation, and the adaptation I performed for my SAP.
