This document contains a graduate thesis and follows the creative process behind Aaron Sawyer’s direction of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s 2011 theatrical production of the play Dylan by Sidney Michaels. It contains seven sections depicting thesis production from the selection of the material to its completion and final reviews. The introduction establishes the perspectives and experiences that led me to this thesis. The pre-production section is comprised of an analysis of the script as well as research on the time-periods material to the play and its production. This thesis explores various artistic and ritual practices of martial arts in relation to its presentation on stage. As a martial artist and actor I believe there are complementary practices in both crafts interdisciplinary of each other. For a martial artist, the individual’s performance and execution of martial arts techniques can be enhanced through emotional availability and characterization. For the actor, the martial arts can help condition the body physically, mentally and emotionally to create a grounded presence of connectivity to the earth. Using the traditional structure and plot constructs of a murder mystery, the thesis also incorporates elements of comedy to create a unique work. A young couple on their honeymoon hears a strange noise from the room next door and attempts to find an explanation. As they search for a satisfactory conclusion, Emma and Peter meet some of the other guests at the hotel, making new friends and encountering new challenges along the way. Take two sites (66 miles apart) and one artist directing simultaneous performances and you have Whitman on his game, expanding the possibilities of artists’ theater. The idea for this play was first hatched in June of 2010. It was summer in Greencastle and with no cable TV and no air-conditioning my roommate and I found the time for many heated, interesting discussions. My roommate was a particularly enterprising individual; his goal was to start a business on the town square, open a convenience store that would tap into Greencastle’s largest market: the DePauw students. When I began the choreographic process, I was inspired by all of the emotions one might feel at a dance audition. However, with much though and manipulation of my original movement, I realized that the body image a dancer has of herself, and the body image for which she is continuously striving, was the underlying message that I wanted my choreography to communicate.
