Versions Of Pygmalion In The Illuminated Roman De La Rose (Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ms. Douce 195): The Artist And The Work Of Art, Marian Bleeke

The article focuses on the manuscript Douce 195, which is a late fifteenth-century copy of the poem "Roman de la Rose," that contains nine images for the poem's Pygmalion myth digression. According to the article, the manuscript was produced by the illuminator and court artist Robert Testard for Duke Charles d'Orleans. The differences between the story of Pygmalion as it is told in the text of the "Roman de la Rose" and in Testard's miniatures in the manuscript are explored. This is second of a series of volumes publishing the results of the excavations of the late Shmarya Gutmann at Gamla. Gamla is the best preserved, and most extensively excavated Jewish site of the late Second Temple period in northern Israel. This second volume describes the stratigraphy and architecture of the various quarters, the building techniques and decoration, as well as the synagogue and the miqva’ot. The finds are published in later volumes.

This paper presents ongoing research, partly undertaken on behalf of ICOMOS Ireland’s Sub-Committee on Climate Change and the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government, into the effects of climate change on World Heritage (and proposed World Heritage) in Ireland. World Heritage sites in Ireland have been key to the formation of a cutting edge climate change monitoring project. The outlined monitoring scheme should form a legacy for the future, producing quantifiable data over the coming century, vital in the assessment of climate change impacts on cultural heritage. On an April evening in 1859, Louise Corcoran, the only child of fabulously wealthy banker, philanthropist, and art collector William Wilson Corcoran, married George Eustis Jr., a United States congressman from Louisiana, in her father’s Washington, D.C., mansion. A “select circle” of more than one thousand guests witnessed the ceremony, which took place in Corcoran’s private art gallery. Writing of the wedding for Harper’s Weekly, George Washington Jenkins noted that one of the original versions of Hiram Powers’s celebrated marble statue The Greek Slave stood at one end of the gallery, “in a bay window which forms a fitting shrine.” …
