Between 2013 and 2015, Arcadia University in partnership with the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology and the University of Catania undertook new excavation campaigns in the Catacombs of St. Lucy at Siracusa. The research focuses on some very problematic parts of Region C of the complex, including Oratory C, the so-called Pagan Shrine and Crypt VI. These areas document most effectively the long life of this Christian hypogeum, which incorporated previous structures and artefacts related to the Greek period and continued to be used until the Middle Ages. Housed in the Museum of Chinese in America is the Fly to Freedom collection of paper art, which were produced by a traditional folk method of Chinese paper folding. The 123 paper works were created by detainees of the Golden Venture, a freighter used to smuggle undocumented immigrants into the U.S. On the evening of June 6, 1993, the ship ran aground off the Rockaways in New York City and nearly 300 migrants, gaunt from the four-month ordeal at sea, poured out of the cramped windowless hold of the vessel. While focusing on high fashion and architecture, this thesis explores an aesthetic transition between the early 20^th century’s “modern” style and the later 20^th century style of “deconstruction.” We believe the style of “deconstruction” revolutionized visual metaphors for modern gender identity through the manipulation and experimentation of surfaces. These metaphors were accomplished through transformation relationships between surface, structure, and ornament. Artist Relatives in Provincetown, Massachusetts explores the practices of eight families of artists across two or three generations who have lived and worked in Provincetown, a town on the very tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Provincetown is one of the oldest and most significant art colonies, dating back to the early 20th century.

This journal article looks at the space of art in the digital age in order to establish whether virtual art practices will eventually render the physicality of art as obsolete. The article draws focus on the construction of virtual spaces to investigate the possibility of a consequential collapse in real space. Two key aspects that I have concentrated on are the social experience of these modes of artistic practice and the inversion of public and private spheres.

Buildings can only be seen through images, including sensory impressions (perceptual images), views created by artists and photographers (pictorial images), the analytical graphics of architects (analytical images), and now, digital means of representation. This article is concerned with another level of image: the themes or metaphors the building was intended to convey (intended images); the image projected by contingent factors such as age, condition, and location (projected images), and the collective image generated by the interaction of the building’s appearance with the norms and expectations of its users and beholders. In a survey of their lives, and a brief exploration of their work, one will come to understand the personal events that contributed to the fear-inducing tones of their art. Their willingness to air their personal grievances has given them credibility in the art world to this day.

Violence And Warfare In The Late Prehistoric Southwest : A Ritual Explanation, Nia Michelle Alecksynas

The last four decades of research regarding the late prehistoric American Southwest has produced abundant evidence for violence, warfare and cannibalism among the Ancestral Puebloan peoples. Most archaeologists attribute this rise in violence and subsequent abandonment of the Four Corners region to degrading environmental conditions. While ecological factors surely contributed, it is hard to accept that this alone led to the extreme mutilation of hundreds of human remains found throughout the Pueblo territory. It is proposed that increasing social complexity along with new ritual practices resulted in intense and violent attacks throughout the Pueblo expanse.

This dissertation investigates the relationship between economic and political complexity through the examination of chipped stone tool procurement, production, consumption, and exchange within Middle, Late, and Terminal Preclassic (1000 B.C. – 250 A.D.) households across Maya lowland political centers. In this study, lithic chert tool and debitage assemblages were collected from midden deposits located at residential areas from the eastern Maya lowland center of San Estevan, located in northern Belize, and from K’o and Hamontún, located in northeastern Petén, Guatemala. During the Preclassic period, Maya centers transitioned from villages to urban centers with burgeoning, state-like institutions, but were also accompanied …

This research is a technofunctional analysis of the by-products of stone tool manufacture. It is a straightforward look at how people were making tools in eastern New York between the Late Archaic and Woodland period. The purpose of the study is to examine whether there is evidence to support models of widespread change in subsistence and settlement practices from the Late Archaic through the Mid-Late Woodland in Eastern New York. Analysis of lithic assemblages from a multitude of sites suggests a gradual settling in of past populations. This dissertation investigates the leading causes behind mortuary behaviors in the Capital District of New York during the Rural Cemetery Movement. Four cemeteries were sampled: Oakwood Rural Cemetery, an established rural cemetery; Waterford Rural Cemetery and Blooming Grove Rural Cemetery, two smaller, non-sectarian cemeteries; and St. John’s Cemetery, a Catholic cemetery. The built and natural landscape was the focus during data collection and analysis, to reveal how the cemetery was experienced and how that experience was affected by and affected society. This project analyzes efforts to remake the relationship between water and city in São Paulo, Brazil. Currently experiencing overlapping problems of flooding, scarcity, and pollution, São Paulo illustrates the challenges of managing water in a contemporary mega-city. This dissertation subsequently considers the city’s water management through an approach that borrows from urban political ecology, social studies of science, and post-colonial urban theory. With an epistemological grounding in these literatures, this project analyzes ongoing conversations about water management in São Paulo, and focuses on how water is encountered and engaged with in the landscape by engineers, artists, and activists. “The term ‘portrait bust’ rarely awakens much enthusiasm among contemporary art connoisseurs, most of whom will likely circumvent major museum galleries devoted to this genre of sculpture” (p. 1). Having dispensed with this matter of business in her opening line, author Ronit Milano delves into the task of convincing her readers that such a response is unwarranted. General scholarship on Frida Kahlo focuses on her personal life, so much so that her work is often viewed through a narrow autobiographical lens. Scholars have subjected her work to a psychoanalytical approach, and have overused her personal narrative as the basis of discussing her art. Her dramatic marriage to Rivera, her poor health and the loss of several pregnancies have led scholars to psychoanalyze her paintings.
