Laying Out A Space: Spectral Geographies, Fictions Of The Soul, Erin D. Yerby 2023 Virginia Commonwealth University

Laying Out A Space: Spectral Geographies, Fictions Of The Soul, Erin D. Yerby

Theses and Dissertations

Laying out a Space: Spectral Geographies, Fictions of the Soul, arises out of my artistic practice, and thoughts behind my current project and MFA exhibition, Spectral Geographies.

Linking the problem of the world ‘out there’ or external space, to inner experience through painting as both medium and practice, my work expresses what I call inner geographies, spaces where intimate immensities, folding inside and outside, find expression. I think of my paintings as beginning with this gesture of laying out a between-space where the intimacies of waking dreams and visions are opened by, and grow into, actual places, …

Music As Art: A Study Of Expressing Emotion Through Music And Art, Cadence Helleson 2023 South Dakota State University

Music As Art: A Study Of Expressing Emotion Through Music And Art, Cadence Helleson

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

People have been expressing emotion with different art forms throughout history. Emotion has always been something that is hard for us to explain with words, so we have turned to painting, drawing, dancing, and music to add a visual or auditory explanation to what we feel. Depending on the chords or colors that are used, music and art can evoke specific emotions. There are many similarities between art and music, especially in the terms used to describe it. Both artists and musicians refer to their work as “compositions” and “pieces.” The musical term “timbre” means tone color and refers to …

Towards A Performative Migratory Aesthetics In Work By Womxn-Identifying Practitioners In The United States, 1970–2018, Laurel V. Mclaughlin

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Towards a Performative Migratory Aesthetics in Works by Womxn-Identifying Practitioners in the United States, 1970–2018 traces ritual—repeated performative actions across time—in performance, theater, and social practice works by womxn-identifying contemporary artists and collectives working in performance. Using an interdisciplinary methodological approach, including art historical formal analysis, performance studies concepts of embodiment, and decolonial theoretical analyses of socio-cultural landscapes, I theorize, in part through the work of Mieke Bal, what I term a “performative migratory aesthetics.” In such a theorization, I argue that the migratory conditions of movement, memory, heterochrony, and contact double as ritualized strategies of performance, serving to construct …

Critical Exhibition Methods In Museums, Jaimie Davis Ms 2023 University of Montana, Missoula

Critical Exhibition Methods In Museums, Jaimie Davis Ms

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Art and anthropology are intimately intertwined as art is an extension of culture which falls under the purview of anthropology. Utilizing interdisciplinary methodology that incorporates both anthropology's considerations for culture and art's consideration of aesthetic creates the best possible methodology for exhibition in museums. Art museums have enough aesthetic and could benefit from the considerations an anthropology's school of thought.

Examining Colonial Impact On Beothuk Technological Traditions On The Island Of Newfoundland, Amanda G. Samuels 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Examining Colonial Impact On Beothuk Technological Traditions On The Island Of Newfoundland, Amanda G. Samuels

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Indigenous technological production and use of tools is often influenced by several cultural factors including, functionality, environment, and cosmological and ideological beliefs. Projectile points are no exception, and they are often imbued with rich, symbolic meaning. While projectile points across North America have been extensively studied using various methods, there are some Indigenous groups and environments that are often excluded from academic, archaeological research, such as the Beothuk of Newfoundland. Since the Beothuk have seldom been the focus of archaeological research, their lithic and iron technology has not yet been analyzed thoroughly. I have conducted a systematic comparative analysis of …

Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Wahl. El Abanico En La Cultura Maya, Roberto Romero Sandoval

Tejiendo imágenes. Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Homenaje a Victòria Solanilla Demestre

Sana Sana: Unlearning Generational Expectation Through Performance, Jalen R. Ash 2023 Georgia Southern University

Sana Sana: Unlearning Generational Expectation Through Performance, Jalen R. Ash

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

My work is an exploration of identity as a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) body traversing through the generational histories of my family and the struggle of cultural loss to our assimilation of Whiteness. Through the multi-faceted medium of performance, my work uses physical and mental spaces of self and technology to understand how the body functions as a screen. Our bodies house projections of generational expectations that have trickled down from the past into the present. These projections shape our own unique identities along with the personal experiences we gather as we move through the various spaces of …

Artistic Representation And Self Esteem, Brianna Davis 2023 Georgia Southern University

Artistic Representation And Self Esteem, Brianna Davis

Honors College Theses

Dependent upon the constructs of the perception of self and the viewpoint of others, humans base the value of their self esteem on outer perspectives rather than internal ones. For this thesis in particular, the outer perspective to be examined is representation in the field of the arts. This thesis project explores the process of self esteem, artistic representation in the arts, how one affects the other, a history of the correlation between the two, and ways to inform and educate the masses with the tools necessary to advance representation in the arts thus raising the self esteem of its …

21st Century Exhibition Rhetorics, Sabina Eastman 2023 Pitzer College

21st Century Exhibition Rhetorics, Sabina Eastman

Pitzer Senior Theses

The desire to create a language through which reading artwork can be attainable to an inclusive audience is a relatively modern aspiration. Painting and sculpture have been longstanding ideals of elite aesthetic ambition, which are held in containers of cultural and social tradition, removed from the ebb and flow of mundane existence. These containers were initially created to encapsulate historic moments, providing insight into a creator and their ideas which were inaccessible to the audience of that era. Since the early 19th century, the conversation in art theory has turned toward the meaning, purpose, and justification for the design and …
