An exacting command of language in his employ, journalist Camille Desmoulins was arguably one of the most dangerous and cunning players in the political arena of revolutionary France. His work is a clear synthesis of linguistic and political theory but what, precisely, made it so effective? When his work is regarded collectively, a theme emerges wherein Desmoulins uses language designed to categorically perpetuate suspicion. Using the principles of lexical semantics, rhetoric, and connotation, this project seeks to examine the semantic undercurrents of Desmoulins’s works as they relate specifically to the public perception of suspicion, and to define the linguistic parameters …

In the French Enlightenment writer the Marquis de Sade’s best-known novel, Justine, issues surrounding God, nature, and humankind pose significant problems for the protagonist of the story. Sade’s materialist philosophical work affirms his belief that nature is the most influential factor in the lives of humans and that God does not exist. Sade states that violence, immorality, and vice derive from nature and exist as the basic instincts of man. He argues that these temptations must be praised rather than forbidden. This paper examines how Fatih Akin’s film Head-On/Gegen die Wand (2004), Feo Aladağ’s film When We Leave/Die Fremde (2010), and Feridun Zaimoğlu’s text Kanak Spraak construct a new Turkish-German identity that is established through resistance to a homogenously imagined culture. With the current influx of immigrants to Germany, the debate about integration, hybridity, and divergence has become more important than ever. The emergence of hybrid migrant identities that are being problematized in Turkish-German movies and texts has shown that issues of belonging and identity caused by multipositionality have become an integral part of Turkish-German narratives. In my thesis, I discuss how Herodotus characterizes the similarities and differences between Greek and non-Greek identity. Herodotus provides his readers with a plethora of details about both Greek and non-Greek peoples in his Histories, which has offered scholars plenty of material to use in this topic. I argue that Herodotus purposefully highlights certain aspects that are shared by certain Greek and non-Greek peoples in order to provide a commentary on his own times. Songbook, including lyrics in both French and English and sheet music, of the repertoire of Les Troubadours, an all-women's Franco-American choir based in Lewiston, Maine. Songs included are primarily those representative of day-to-day life, such as lullabies and children's songs. Also includes biographical sketches of three members of Les Troubadours: Aliette Couturier, Irene Mercier, and Jeannine Doucette.

In the last two decades, a considerable number of contemporary French authors have employed metafiction—a narrative mode in which texts themselves purposefully call attention to the fact that they are fiction—when writing novels which attempt to grapple with traumatic events, namely World War II and the Holocaust. In attempting to understand this popular, but controversial literary phenomenon—called historiographic metafiction—, this thesis contextually analyzes Laurent Binet's Himmler's Him heisst Heydrich (2010), a contemporary French novel about the assassination of real-life Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich. Despite this, native languages hold very few domains in Cameroonian society.
