This thesis explores the power struggle between the widows and young men in Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. The focus is specifically on the power struggle regarding marriage: the widow endeavors to arrange the man’s marriage, while the man fights to regain his agency and masculinity by manying whom he chooses. This thesis examines the implications of these struggles between male and female and arranged and companionate marriages.

This thesis will also discuss the stylistic reflection of these struggles in the text. Jane Austen gives us male characters who are under the domination of a wealthy widow. While …

This work is my graduate thesis documenting the creative process behind my performance of the role of Edgar in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s 2009 production of King Lear by William Shakespeare. It is comprised of five sections including an introduction, pre-rehearsal research, rehearsal and performance journal, post-production responses and conclusion. The introduction outlines my impressions of Edgar and King Lear prior to researching or rehearsing the role. Most will remember Tim O’Brien’s Vietnam War narrative, The Things They Carried, for its exploration of the war experience of American soldiers and for its original style and form. While less conspicuous, O’Brien also provides a complex account of the role of things in relation to his characters throughout the collection of short stories. In my paper, I argue that the soldier characters depend on things to help them survive the war (physically and mentally) and that this strong dependence on things ends up having a damaging effect on the men. Turning `The Angel Of The House' Out Of The House: Privacy In The Nineteenth Century Sensation Novel, Ashley Crider

This thesis explores nineteenth-century transatlantic sensation fiction. My examination of George Lippard's The Quaker City: Or the Monks of Monk HallThe Quaker City: Or the Monks of Monk Hall (1845) and Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret investigates the construction of the Angel of the House in both the domestic and public spheres. I pay particular attention to `feminine' spaces such as the boudoir, and how the sensation novel represents physical space and commodity culture to comment on female sexual agency and how nineteenth century classes constructed womanhood.
