Global Communities: The Potential Of Street Art And The Public Space, Elena Picech

The Coastal Review

This paper highlights the significance of physical proximity and the potentiality of socio-spatial situations as tools to enrich study abroad programs. Particular attention is given to street art and the public space. While, studying on-site can be somewhat uncomfortable, it can potentially prompt unique reflections, enhance student’s learning and encourage introspection. Being on-site provides the opportunity to come into contact and to connect with the physical objects and their environment. It enables a multisensory and immersive embodied experience. Leveraging art for communicative educational activities can facilitate a participatory experience, promote critical thinking and enhance cultural understanding.

Abstract: Many French fantastic texts from the nineteenth century employ the use of a femme-fatale to highlight and underscore the dangers inherit with the female figure. This can be seen in vampires, ghosts, fairies, and other supernatural phenomena wherein a female character takes on incredible attributes. Propser Mérimée’s Lokis offers readers a tale wherein those same female figures are given traits that resemble the traditional femme-fatale, but in doing so they highlight the deadly nature of the titular half-man/half-bear creature. On Jan. 1, 2022, A.A. Milne’s willy, nilly, silly old bear entered the public domain, but this paper will argue why Disney's version will most likely retain its longevity despite additional competition. Disney's franchise-ation of Winnie the Pooh has left their iteration of the bear at the forefront of audience's minds. While Disney's version retains its iconic image of the bear, however, the release of the character into the public domain will allow others to utilize the bear in new ways. This study used a survey to investigate self-study and university-enrolled Chinese learners’ habits in studying Chinese vocabulary in order to determine what study methods influence a.) learners’ confidence in learning Chinese vocabulary and b.) what aspects of Chinese vocabulary they consider easy or difficult. We were particularly interested in seeing what the data had to say about students’ attitudes towards characters and the written language, given that the field of Chinese language pedagogy is known for a stronger focus on the written language as opposed to the spoken language. Where many define nihilism as the belief that life and all moral principles are meaningless, the French philosopher, Michel Onfray, expounds on this classic definition and argues that true nihilism is the refusal to accept the world as it is. Unlike monotheistic religions and totalitarian regimes that urge their followers to practice asceticism now to attain happiness in the future, Onfray believes that hedonistic pleasure can be found when the individual rediscovers autonomy and returns to an atomistic worldview that is immersed in the imminent.

This article analyzes Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes’ Retrato calado (Silent Portrait) published in 1988, considering the theoretical discussions on testimonio's epistemology—addressing the challenge of narrating trauma and the risk of stylization. It compares Fortes' memoir with Fernando Gabeira's O que é isso, companheiro? (What's This, Comrade?) from 1979, examining diverse approaches to capturing historical trauma through literature and its impact on collective memory about Brazilian Dictatorship (1964-1985).

The neoliberal society we live in encourages a constant maximization of the “project of the self.” The tradition of Christian mysticism, centered on self-denial and passivity, provides an alternative understanding of the self. In this essay, I draw testimonial and theoretical accounts of mysticism from the autobiography of a 16th-century Spanish nun, Teresa of Ávila, and essays from a 20th-century French philosopher, Simone Weil. By bringing these two authors in conversation, I hope to illuminate three aspects of self-effacement in the Christian mystical tradition. This thesis explores the parallels between Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground and Richard Wright's The Man Who Lived Underground, focusing on their shared use of the "Underground Man" archetype to critique philosophical and societal structures. Dostoyevsky's Underground Man embodies the contradictions of Determinism and Rational Egoism in 19th-century Russia, exposing the flaws of these ideologies through satire. In contrast, Wright recontextualizes this character to address racial injustice in mid-20th-century America, using Fred Daniels' descent into a literal underground to highlight systemic oppression. Trailblazing Puerto Rican women in the diaspora have challenged dominant imagery and fought against patriarchy, U.S. imperialism, and white supremacy through their writing. Writers like Esmeralda Santiago and Nicholasa Mohr have transformed the literary canon via the bildungsroman, highlighting the unique struggles of Boricua girlhood and proving that our stories matter. My project is focused on identifying and responding to Christian nationalism in United States politics by utilizing Albert Camus’s novel The Plague. The Plague found heightened popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and its lasting legacy points to what should be long-term prominence in the public eye. With its popularity and anti-fascist content, The Plague is an appropriate text to utilize for addressing America’s Christian nationalism. Does the use of media strategies help social movements or mass protest movements in Southeast Asia achieve their goals? The prominent study in this area argues that social media, in particular, has done more harm than good for grassroots movements. Tufekci (2017) argues that social media provides little help compared to the regime. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทําขึ้นโดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาเรื่องบทบรรยายใต้ภาพ, ความขบขัน, และการเล่นคํา เพื่อทําความเข้าใจการเล่นคําที่ก่อให้เกิดความขบขันในละครซิทคอมเรื่อง Mind Your Language แล้วช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยพบแนวทางการแปลที่หลากหลายซึ่งสามารถสร้างอารมณ์ขันให้ผู้ชมในภาษาปลายทางได้ทั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาแนวทางการแปลบทบรรยายใต้ภาพของเฮนริค ก็อตต์ลีบ (Henrik Gottlieb), การศึกษาความไม่เข้ากัน (Incongruity and Resolution), การศึกษาทฤษฎีความเกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์ (Relevance theory) ของแดน สเปอร์เบอร์ (Dan Sperber) และเดร์เดอร์ วิลสัน (Deirdre Wilson), การศึกษาทฤษฎีระบบภาษา (Register theory) ของไมเคิล ฮัลลิเดย์ (Michael Halliday) และแนวทางการแปลการเล่นคําของเดิร์ก ดิลาบาสทิทา (Dirk Delabastita) เพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท และวิเคราะห์ปัญหาในการถ่ายทอดความขบขันในตัวบทที่เป็นสื่อโสตทัศน์ (Audiovisual work) รวมทั้งวางแผนแก้ปัญหาดังกล่าวผลการศึกษาวิจัยพบว่า ทฤษฎีและแนวทางต่าง ๆ ข้างต้นสามารถช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยเข้าใจกระบวนการสร้างความขบขันของการเล่นคำที่สัมพันธ์กับเนื้อเรื่อง รวมทั้งประเภทของการเล่นคำที่เกิดในแต่ละสถานการณ์ ซึ่งทำให้ผู้วิจัยรู้ว่าควรแปลการเล่นคำในภาษาอังกฤษให้สอดคล้องกับการเล่นคำในภาษาไทยอย่างไร และเมื่อพบการเล่นคำที่มีความแตกต่างด้านวัฒนธรรมร่วมด้วย ผู้วิจัยก็พบว่าควรปรับให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมและสังคมของผู้ชมในภาษาปลายทางเพื่อให้พวกเขาเข้าใจความไม่เข้ากันที่เกิดขึ้นให้เหตุการณ์นั้น ๆ แล้วรู้สึกขบขันตรงตามจุดมุ่งหมายของละครซิทคอม อย่างไรก็ตาม บางกรณีก็มีข้อจำกัดด้านภาพซึ่งปรากฏมาพร้อมกับบทบรรยายใต้ภาพที่มีการเล่นคำ ส่งผลให้ผู้วิจัยไม่อาจคงลักษณะของการเล่นคำตามตัวบทต้นฉบับไว้ได้

สารนิพนธ์นี้เป็นงานวิจัยที่ศึกษาความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างการเคลื่อนที่เกิดขึ้นในกระบวนการแปลปาฐกถาเรื่อง “Democracy and Patronage System of Thailand” กับหน้าที่หรือวัตถุประสงค์ของบทแปลรวมถึงอุดมการณ์ของผู้แปล โดยใช้รูปแบบการวิเคราะห์เชิงระบบสำหรับการแปลเชิงพรรณนาของเจเรมี่ มันเดย์และทฤษฎีเรื่องเล่าของโมนา เบเคอร์การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลมีขั้นตอนทั้งหมด 2 ขั้นตอนหลัก โดยขั้นตอนที่ 1 เป็นการศึกษาต้นฉบับและสำนวนแปล 2 ฉบับโดยใช้รูปแบบการวิเคราะห์เชิงระบบสำหรับการแปลเชิงพรรณนาของมันเดย์ ซึ่งประกอบด้วย 3 ขั้นตอนย่อย ได้แก่ (1) การวิเคราะห์ด้วยทฤษฎีไวยากรณ์ระบบและหน้าที่ (2) การวิเคราะห์ด้วยภาษาศาสตร์คลังข้อมูล และ (3) การวิเคราะห์ร่วมกับบริบททางสังคมและการเมือง และขั้นตอนที่ 2 ได้แก่ได้แก่การนำผลการวิเคราะห์ที่ได้จากขั้นตอนแรกมาวิเคราะห์ร่วมกับทฤษฎีเรื่องเล่า (Narrative Theory) โดยมุ่งศึกษาประเด็นทั้งหมด 3 ประเด็น ได้แก่ (1) ประเภทของเรื่องเล่าที่พบในกระบวนการแปลต้นฉบับ (2) องค์ประกอบของเรื่องเล่าที่เชื่อมโยงกับการเคลื่อนที่พบ (3) กลวิธีในการกำหนดกรอบเรื่องเล่าที่เชื่อมโยงกับการเคลื่อนที่พบจากการวิเคราะห์ต้นฉบับและสำนวนแปล 2 ฉบับตามขั้นตอนข้างต้น ทำให้พิสูจน์สมมติฐานได้ว่าการเคลื่อนที่เกิดขึ้นมีความเชื่อมโยงกับวัตถุประสงค์ในการแปลรวมถึงอุดมการณ์ของผู้แปล ผ่านการใช้ภาษาไม่ว่าจะในเชิงการสื่อความคิด เชิงการสื่อบุคคลสัมพันธ์ และเชิงความเรียง และการที่มีการเคลื่อนที่สามารถเชื่อมโยงได้กับองค์ประกอบของเรื่องเล่าทั้ง 4 องค์ประกอบ ได้แก่การลำดับเรื่อง ความเชื่อมโยงของเรื่องเล่า การวางโครงเรื่อง และ การเลือกสรรข้อมูล และการใช้กลวิธีในการวางกรอบเรื่องเล่า ได้แก่การเลือกสรรข้อมูล การใช้ถ้อยคำตีตรา และการเปลี่ยนตำแหน่งผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้องในเหตุการณ์ แสดงให้เห็นว่าการเคลื่อนเหล่านั้นมีส่วนในการประกอบสร้างเรื่องเล่าของผู้แปลแต่ละคนให้มีความสอดคล้องกับวัตถุประสงค์ของบทแปลและอุดมการณ์ของผู้แปลนอกจากนั้น การวิเคราะห์ด้วยทฤษฎีเรื่องเล่าทำให้พบว่าการแปลปาฐกถาเรื่อง “Democracy and Patronage System of Thailand” นำเสนอเรื่องเล่าปัจเจกบุคคล 1 เรื่องได้แก่เรื่องเล่าที่แสดงถึงจุดยืนของนายจักรภพต่อระบบอุปถัมภ์ เรื่องเล่าสาธารณะ 1 เรื่องได้แก่เรื่องเล่าสาธารณะว่าด้วยบทบาทของพระมหากษัตริย์ในสังคมไทย เรื่องเล่าวิชาการ 1 เรื่องได้แก่เรื่องเล่าวิชาการว่าด้วยระบบอุปถัมภ์และประชาธิปไตย และเรื่องเล่าแม่บท 1 เรื่องได้แก่เรื่องเล่าแม่บทว่าด้วยการเข้าสู่ประชาธิปไตย
