Design Of A Test For Research On Architectural Features Of Streetscape, Maria E. M. Carlier, Cristian A. Maestre, Gladys E. Maestre
Research Symposium
Background: The architectural experience may impact people’s behavior, health, and well-being, engaging several neural networks. Sensory-motor networks mediate motor responses such as approach and avoidance and spatial navigation in response to stimuli. Limbic networks process feelings and emotions. Memory-related networks support personal experiences, education, and culture. The interaction between architecture and brain sciences is known as neuroarchitecture which promises to offer biologically inspired insights into the design of spaces. We are interested in the study of neuroarchitecture applied to the streetscapes of neighborhoods in South Texas. The primary purpose of this study is to design a cognitive test to assess …

Collection And Analysis Of Architectural Features In Streetscapes In South Texas, Cristian Maestre, Maria E. M. Carlier, Gladys E. Maestre
Research Symposium
Background: The built environment of neighborhoods influences the health and well-being of residents. One approach to studying the impact of such a built environment on people's health is through the study of the memorability of the architectural features (AFs) in streetscapes. In this direction, we raise the question: what AFs are more memorable? Understanding how AFs impact cognition will allow us to propose neighborhood designs that consider this finding to foster people's health and well-being. However, AFs in streetscapes are not universal they need to be studied in specific historical, cultural, and geographical contexts. In order to analyze the memorability …

Reframing Perceptions Of Signares In French Colonial Senegal, Gabriela E. Weaver
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
Fifteenth to nineteenth-century French Colonial Senegal was a period of unprecedented cultural contact and convergence in Western Africa. With these interactions came new social hierarchies and the emergence of the signare identity. Signares were wealthy mixed-race and African Women who became involved with French men. This paper examines nineteenth-century art by Frenchman David Boilat and Stanislas Darondeau, and the eighteenth-century house of signare Anne Pepin. It critiques the racism and sexism depicted within Boilat and Darondeau’s work as well as its misinterpretations by contemporary scholars Mark Hinchman and George E. Brooks. Signares were knowledgeable entrepreneurs rather than manipulative and seductive …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cellulose Microfibril-Reinforced Polyvinyl Alcohol Biodegradable Composites, Fatemeh Mahdiyeh-Boroujeni, Gabriella Fioravanti, Ronald Kander
School of Design and Engineering Papers
The pursuit of an environmentally sustainable manufacturing process requires the substitution of less damaging and recyclable solutions for harmful reagents. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of using cellulose microfibrils synthesized via different hydrolysis reactions as reinforcing agents in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at varying concentrations. The investigation explores the morphology, thermal properties, and chemical behavior of the cellulose particles. The cellulose microfibrils (CMFs) produced using citric acid exhibited the highest yield and aspect ratio. Notably, particles from organic acids demonstrated greater thermal stability, with oxalic acid-derived particles displaying the maximum thermal degradation temperature. Subsequently, cast films of PVA reinforced …

An Investigation Of The Physical And Thermal Properties Of Irish Hemp Fibres As A Loose-Fill Insulation Product, Killian Markey, Sameer Mehra Dr., David Palmer, David Knight, Timothy O'Leary
Conference papers
Construction and built environment sectors account for approximately 37% of Ireland’s carbon emissions. Of this 37%, 14% of the emissions consist of embodied carbon emissions from the construction materials from the production to the end-of-disposal of buildings. The construction industry can reduce its embodied carbon by using materials with a lower embodied carbon. Hemp fibre batt insulation is an example of a bio-based material and a lower embodied carbon alternative to conventional insulations. The existing hemp fibre batt insulation is typically composed of hemp fibres with a polyester binder. These polyester binders have higher embodied carbon while also being a …

Exploring The Impact Of Design Professionals On The Energy Retrofit Of Dwellings In Ireland: A Qualitative Methodology, Olivia Golden
Conference papers
A qualitative approach was taken to investigate the role of design professionals in the energy retrofit of external wall insulation to dwellings in Ireland. The research method combines document analysis with semi structured interviews. Document analysis is used to both inform the questions for the interviews and for validation. The SEAI One Stop Shop grant scheme and PAS 2035 framework were selected for detailed document analysis to gain an understanding of the context in which design professionals are working in Ireland and compare it to the energy retrofit framework in the United Kingdom. This was investigated by mapping the data …

A Bent Laminated Glass is commonly used in the residential and commercial structures, its methodology is not present in the curves and tables at the ASTM E1300. Therefore, it has become a need for architects to use basis for this type of glass. To the best of authors ‘knowledge, no one study the bent laminated glass in details. A variety of safety glass that has lately gained popularity in the construction sector is modern laminated glass. Given that it offers a safe failover capability, it is perfect for the automotive industry. Double-lite glass is produced using two or more …

Market Analysis And Bidding Strategy Of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems Considering Emissions, Fatma Elzahraa, Mohamed Elnemr, Samir Dawoud
Journal of Engineering Research
The competition in the electricity markets makes it difficult to choose a suitable strategy for maximizing profit while reducing harmful emissions. To have an adequate energy price for consumers while minimizing the harmful emissions to the atmosphere and maximizing profits of all participants in the electricity market needs an aggressive bidding strategy. Developing these bidding strategies with the integration of renewable energy (RE) in the electricity market became important. This research studies various bidding strategies for maximizing profits in the deregulated energy market since participants are keen on developing bidding strategies considering emissions. These bidding strategies will consider the integration …

Kinetic Applications Of Smart Materials In Architecture: A Descriptive Analysis, Youssef Elkhayat
Journal of Engineering Research
In recent years, many smart materials for architectural applications have been invented. Some smart materials can adapt and interact with the surrounding environment and its variants, whether temperature, humidity, daylight or electric current. Smart material changes its shape without any need for assistance, and it can return to its original state without any significant deformation in shape with the end of the external influence. The invention of smart materials stimulated several architects and facade designers to consider using them in various architectural applications such as sun shading, sun breakers, and windows, significantly impacting the concept and technology of movement in …

Journal of Engineering Research
A turbulent flow field has a major effect on the premixed flame structure and temperature distribution that specifically determines the effectiveness of the burned fuel and the amounts of produced emissions. However, the premixed flame tangential and axial velocity distribution through the flame length help to predict the combustion and emissions attributes of the burned fuel. In this regard, an experimental and analytical investigation on premixed turbulent burners at different equivalence fuel-air ratios with different swirl vane angles has been achieved in the present work to assess the combustion performance and emissions characteristics. A theoretical methodology was carried out to …

Architecture reflects a nation’s cultural, social, and environmental characteristics. As a result of the recent globalization, countries have lost their distinctive architectural identities; due to this, it is difficult to identify A country’s unique identity locally and regionally. Specifically, in Egypt, houses in the traditional style are considered one of the most iconic architectural styles. There is an amazing local identity and a unique spatial quality in the region that characterizes Egypt. On the other hand, Western influences have caused many of the values and attributes of houses to fade. One of the most prominent values is the home’s loss …
