The utilization of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) subjected to carbonation processing represents a viable strategy to mitigate anthropogenic CO₂ emissions associated with concrete production, potentially contributing to the achievement of carbon neutrality. However, existing studies have limitations in effectively predicting the varying carbonation capacities of different SCMs, a gap that this research aims to address. Recent research efforts focused on the carbonation of waste-material-sourced SCMs are reviewed, along with a comparative discussion on diverse carbonation methods. This research investigates the rightsizing strategies of a mid-sized, shrinking city in Ohio, to explore the tensions and complexities that rightsizing efforts introduce into the urban governance landscape. The questions that guide this research draw on the theories of rightsizing to reveal the ways in which rightsizing efforts implemented by city officials enabled economic revitalization as well as cultivated a pipeline to urban growth efforts. The research findings contribute to our understanding of rightsizing by revealing the ways that shrinking cities struggle to fully adopt rightsizing as its own end goal, rather than a means to a growth-oriented urban landscape. …

This dissertation analyzes the effects of the employment sub-centers on the surrounding area. It does so by examining the percentage changes in workers' socioeconomic characteristics such as age, earnings, and industry sectors from 2002 to 2020 while controlling for job and population density. The data for this study is derived from the Workplace Area Characteristics (WAC) data set.

The dissertation aims to answer five crucial research questions. These questions delve into how the percentage change of socioeconomic characteristics of employment sub-centers affects households' income, ethnicity, age, and gender in the surrounding area of the employment sub-centers. In North American cities, the land use and transportation systems are associated with low-density, suburban-type urban development, where the built environment contributes to a mobility pattern that is extremely reliant on automobiles. Several studies in the past decades have documented noticeable and concerning patterns of unjust and unsustainable transportation in this context. As a result, for those population groups with limited access to private transportation, this form of urban structure is equivalent to limited access to opportunities, leading to various environmental and social problems. This thesis analyzes the current state of High-Speed Rail (HSR) development within the United States and the reasoning behind its historical failure. Through frameworks such as funding and organizational structure of public or private entities (or both), this paper focuses on three case studies: The Northeast Corridor Improvement Project, Florida’s Brightline, and the California High-Speed Rail Project. The COVID-19 pandemic brought into focus that outdoor activities in natural settings have a positive impact on mental health, and individuals participating in outdoor activity report higher rates of emotional well-being than individuals who do not participate in such activity. Biophilic design is an architectural practice that aims to connect people to nature through design concepts with one of the benefits being psychological. The struggle for women’s rights was long fought throughout American history and Michigan played a vital role in the movement’s success. This thesis explores three monumental eras that shaped the struggle for women’s suffrage in Michigan, detailing the evolution from the 1860s Civil War Era through the late 19th and early 20th century Progressive Era. The first era highlights how the Civil War provided women opportunities to challenge prevailing gender conventions and express political opinions.
