Women’S Health Guides [Review Article], Meg Miner 2009 Illinois Wesleyan University

Women’S Health Guides [Review Article], Meg Miner

Meg Miner

The fight for equal rights for women may be over a hundred years old, but in medical research, women have only been treated equally since the 1990s. That is also the time that evidence-based women’s health handbooks started to appear. Up to that point, most studies only included recommendations for women that had been deduced from analyses of men’s responses to clinical trials.
This article reviews four new publications on women’s health: two that were written for health professionals and two for consumers.

The Karst Information Portal (KIP) is a publicly accessible Internet portal for karst literature and data, hosted by the University of South Florida (USF) libraries. It was created to foster interaction and collaboration among the karst community by identifying, acquiring, and facilitating access to karst literature in a single, centralized location. Karst is a type of terrain typified by soluble rocks, such as limestone, gypsum, and dolomite, where solutional processes are dominant, forming sinkholes, depressions, caves, and enhancing underground drainage. The karst community consists of formal researchers working in academic or governmental institutions along with an informal cohort of recreational …

The popularity of motion pictures in digital form has seen a dramatic increase in recent years, and the global entertainment market has driven demands for subtitles in multiple languages. This paper investigates the informational potential of aggregating a corpus of multilingual subtitles for a digital library. Subtitles are extracted from commercial DVD releases and downloaded from the internet. These subtitles and their bibliographic metadata are then incorporated in an XML-based database structure. A digital library prototype is developed to provide full-text search and browse of the subtitle text with single- or parallel-language displays. The resulting product includes a set of …

Solving The Rubrics Cube: Using Assessment To Sharpen Library Instruction, Elisa Slater Acosta, Susan Gardner

Susan Gardner Archambault

Loyola Marymount University's (LMU) Reference Department designed a rubric to measure student learning outcomes for freshman English. Students sequentially completed an "English 110 Library Research Worksheet” during library instruction. The rubric which is set up to analyze learning outcomes from parts of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education is applied to collected student worksheets. The Department undertook a multi-step process to try to calibrate the rubric and achieve consensus estimates of inter-rater reliability. During fall 2009, reference & instruction librarians collected 755 worksheets and graded a random sample of 100 students. This poster session will present the …

Bibliometric Fingerprints: Name Disambiguation Based On Approximate Structure Equivalence Of Cognitive Maps, Li Tang, John P. Walsh

Li Tang

Authorship identity has long been an Achilles’ heel in bibliometric analyses at the individual level. This problem appears in studies of scientists’ productivity, inventor mobility and scientific collaboration. Using the concepts of cognitive maps from psychology and approximate structural equivalence from network analysis, we develop a novel algorithm for name disambiguation based on knowledge homogeneity scores. We test it on two cases, and the results show that this approach outperforms other common authorship identification methods with the ASE method providing a relatively simple algorithm that yields higher levels of accuracy with reasonable time demands.
