The Milwaukee Public Library has many special collections. These special collections exist both within MPL's various archives and as part of several reference departments housed at MPL's Central Library. The Milwaukee Public Library's archives consist of the City of Milwaukee Archives, the Great Lakes Marine Collection, the Historic Photo Archives, the Manuscript Collection, the Milwaukee Road Archives, MPL's Own Archives, and the Wisconsin Architectural Archive. In addition, many of Central Library's subject departments have special collections beyond those contained in these seven archives. Most, although not all, of these special collections contain local history resources. Some collections are of broader …

Milwaukee Waterways (Digital Collection), Rose Fortier

Rose Fortier

Milwaukee Waterways illustrates the role Lake Michigan and Milwaukee's rivers have played in the history of Milwaukee. Pictures of the harbor and ships from around the world loading and unloading materials show the variety of materials that passed through the Port over time. Other pictures illustrate the role the rivers played in the commercial development of the city. Aerial views of the harbor and rivers and lakefront show the changing uses of the water and land. Milwaukee was founded at the site where three rivers; the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic, flow into Lake Michigan. Milwaukee began as a Great Lakes …

Using An Interdisciplinary Approach To Teach Undergraduates Communication And Information Literacy Skills, Andrea Dinkelman, Jeanine Aune, Gail Nonnecke

Andrea L. Dinkelman

For successful and productive careers, undergraduate students need effective communication and critical thinking skills; information literacy is a substantial component in the development of these skills. Students often perceive communication courses as distinct and separate from their chosen discipline. Faculty from the Departments of English and Horticulture and the library at Iowa State University collaborated in a foundation communication course (English 250). The course incorporates five components—finding information sources; evaluating information sources; and preparing an annotated bibliography, a research paper, and a research poster—all within the context of horticulture. The objective of the collaboration was to integrate communication and information …

Protection, Not Barriers: Using Social Software Policies To Guide And Safeguard Students And Employees., Brian Kooy, Sarah Steiner

Brian K. Kooy

Academic librarians have been using social software and networking sites for public services since they appeared on the Internet. While issues of privacy, identity management, and self-disclosure when using such technologies have been written about, very little critical attention has been paid to establishing policies or guidelines related to their use. This article is based on the authors’ experience creating a social software policy and internal service guidelines at Georgia State University and on the results of an informal survey study that gauged academic librarians’ need for and awareness of such documents. It provides both reasoning and assistance for developing …

The information in these documents include a parent giving permission for an underage child to marry, an affidavit of there being no impediment to marriage, information on the closeness of the blood relationship, and written permission for the clerk to hand the marriage license to a third party for delivery. These documents generally do not have standardized information, but …
