“Why Does Google Scholar Sometimes Ask For Money?” Engaging Science Students In Scholarly Communication And The Economics Of Information, Scott Warren, Kim Duckett
Libraries' and Librarians' Publications
This article outlines instructional strategies for teaching students about scholarly communication and the economic realities that surround scientific information. Exposing students to the business side of academic communication provides a foundation for understanding how Google relates to library-subscription resources, how research is both shared and discovered, what the role of libraries is in providing access to costly information, and how disparities arise in information access. Such instruction contextualizes search tools such as article databases as well as Google Scholar, and thereby serves as an appropriate starting point for teaching students to use such tools.

Educating A School Community Implementing A One-To-One Laptop Learning Initiative, Shannon Mcclintock Miller
Graduate Research Papers
As a major technological change is implemented into a school community, such as a one-to-one laptop learning initiative, it is essential to educate everyone involved in order for it to be successful. In this research project, the Van Meter 1:1 Laptop Learning Initiative Google Site was developed to provide the resources and continued support needed for the change. The digital tools created to be used through the Google site brought knowledge, collaboration, creativity, and connections to the students, teachers, parents, and community at Van Meter. The tools also served as a way for Van Meter to connect to the world …

Self-Censorship In Iowa Elementary Libraries, Lacey Fliger
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether or not Iowa elementary school children had access to fiction and non-fiction titles containing potentially controversial topics. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether Iowa elementary schools with professionally certified school librarians hold a greater number of recommended books from ALA Notable Children's Books list from 2002-2009 in which reviews do not indicate potentially controversial topics as compared with those ALA Notable Children's Books from the same years in which reviews indicate potentially controversial topics. The methodology used for this study was quantitative research. The researcher randomly chose 45 …

Testing The Viability Of The Read Scale (Reference Effort Assessment Data)®: Qualitative Statistics For Academic Reference Services, Bella Karr Gerlich, G. Lynn Berard
Library and Learning Resources Faculty Research & Creative Works
The READ Scale (Reference Effort Assessment Data) is a six-point scale tool for recording qualitative statistics by placing an emphasis on recording effort, knowledge, skills, and teaching used by staff during a reference transaction. Institutional research grants enabled the authors to conduct a national study of the READ Scale at 14 diverse academic libraries in spring of 2007 and test its viability as a tool for recording reference statistics. The study data were collected from 170 individuals and 24 service points with over 22,000 transactions analyzed. There was a 52 percent return rate of an online survey of participants, with …
Exploring Library 2.0 On The Social Web, 2010 Eastern Illinois University
Exploring Library 2.0 On The Social Web, Steve Brantley
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Library 2.0 literature has described many of the possibilities Web 2.0 technologies offer libraries. Case studies have assessed local use, but no studies have measured the Library 2.0 phenomenon by searching public social networking sites. This study used library-specific terms to search public social networking sites, blog search engines, and social bookmarking sites for activity associated with librarians and library users. Blog search data about the recentness of activity or the popularity of a blog post indicate Library 2.0 technology has many early adopters but provide less evidence of sustained use. The results follow a curve resembling the 80 / …

'Not Yet Ready': Australian University Libraries And Carnegie Corporation Philanthropy, 1935-1945, Michael J. Birkner
History Faculty Publications
In recent years the Carnegie Corporation's influence on Australian library development has been fruitfully examined from many angles, among them its role in promoting free-library movements in the various states. One piece of the story, however, remains mostly in the shadows: the Corporation's initiatives pointing towards modernizing and professionalizing Australian university libraries. Although the Corporation's philanthropic enterprise at the university level yielded mixed results at best, it was not inconsequential. It provided a blueprint for future university-library development in Australia. In one instance, at the University of Melbourne, it inspired a vice-chancellor to articulate a vision of a library future …

The focus of the Animal Science collection is diverse in nature as it encompasses disciplines that are well established within colleges …
Information-Seeking Behavior Of Basic Science Researchers: Implications For Library Services, 2010 University of Vermont
Information-Seeking Behavior Of Basic Science Researchers: Implications For Library Services, Laura L. Haines, Jeanene Light, Donna O'Malley, Frances A. Delwiche
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
Objectives: This study examined the information-seeking behaviors of basic science researchers to inform the development of customized library services.
Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted on a sample of basic science researchers employed at a university medical school.
Results: The basic science researchers used a variety of information resources ranging from popular Internet search engines to highly technical databases. They generally relied on basic keyword searching, using the simplest interface of a database or search engine. They were highly collegial, interacting primarily with coworkers in their laboratories and colleagues employed at other institutions. They made little use …
Information Use In History Research: A Citation Analysis Of Master's Level Theses, 2010 University of Vermont
Information Use In History Research: A Citation Analysis Of Master's Level Theses, Graham Sherriff
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
This article addresses the need for quantitative investigation into students' use of information resources in historical research. It reports the results of a citation analysis of more than 3,000 citations from master's level history theses submitted between 1998 and 2008 at a mid-sized public university. The study's results support the hypotheses that the predominant format in history research is the monograph and that history research entails use of older resources, and in greater proportions, than other disciplines. Results also support the conclusions that journal usage is comparatively low and that there is a high degree of citation dispersal across journal …
