Open Access And Liberal Education: A Look At Armenia, Azerbaijan And Georgia, D. Aram Donabedian, John Carey

Publications and Research

In the post-Soviet era, libraries in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia have faced increasing budgetary challenges. In response to socioeconomic restructuring and the introduction of private enterprise, libraries have been forced to seek alternatives to commercial publishing and licensing models. This paper will assess the status of the open access movement and of Internet filtering controls in the countries of the South Caucasus. It will also argue that developing open models for scholarly communications is crucial to the strengthening of liberal education and civic participation in these aspiring democracies. Libraries, in their role as providers of and advocates for shared information, …

Deserving Of Trust: Ethics In The American Archival Profession, Rachel E. (Rachel Elizabeth) Thompson 2011 Western Washington University

Deserving Of Trust: Ethics In The American Archival Profession, Rachel E. (Rachel Elizabeth) Thompson

WWU Graduate School Collection

This thesis explores ways in which the American archival profession, through the Society of American Archivists (SAA), can promote the trustworthiness of archives and archivists. The further professionalization, which involves the creation of a cohesive organization, standards, and a code of ethics, of the archival field is one proposed starting point. Currently, SAA is already on the path of professionalization. For some occupations, professionalization also includes the enforcement of standards and ethics, as well as the certification of members. I argue that for the American archival profession, however, these are not the paths to take. Enforcement and certification require infrastructure …

Maine Shared Collections Strategy, Deborah Rollins, Clem Guthro, Barbara McDade, Matthew Revitt 2011 Principal Investigator; University of Maine, Orono

Maine Shared Collections Strategy, Deborah Rollins, Clem Guthro, Barbara Mcdade, Matthew Revitt

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

Libraries are facing fundamental changes in user demands for new services and spaces to support the use of digital collections, and new opportunities to offer digital content through large scale e-book collections such as Google Books and the Open Content Alliance. Simultaneously, libraries feel pressures to responsibly steward sizeable, historic print collections. These challenges, together with scarce funding to build new stacks and the increasing cost of housing legacy print collections require libraries to rethink management of print collections and delivery of e-book collections to their users. Print on demand services and delivery of e-book content provide opportunities to plan …

Effective Selectors? Interlibrary Loan Patrons As Monograph Purchasers: A Comparative Examination Of Price And Circulation-Related Performance, David C. Tyler, Joyce C. Melvin, Yang Xu, Marylou Epp, Anita M. Kreps

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

In the library literature, a great deal of interest in patron-driven collection development has recently been expressed, especially in those programs that link acquisitions with interlibrary loan. However, the implementation of such programs has been limited, at least in part because of concerns over the potential for wasteful spending. The authors will attempt to address this common concern by assessing whether monies spent via a patron-driven acquisitions program were more or less effective than monies spent via traditional modes of acquisition.

Finding The Right Metaphor: Restructuring, Realigning, And Repackaging Today’S Research Libraries, Joan Giesecke 2011 Universityof Nebraska-Lincoln

Finding The Right Metaphor: Restructuring, Realigning, And Repackaging Today’S Research Libraries, Joan Giesecke

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

To change from collection-centric to user-centered research libraries and to survive in tough economic times, libraries face 2 major challenges: 1st, libraries need to change how they are viewed by their constituencies so they are seen as indispensable; and 2nd, libraries need to help the librarians and staff change their own mental models of their roles to remain relevant in these changing times. Metaphors are one way to help people connect terms in new ways so they develop new images of those terms. For more than 100 years, libraries have used metaphors to seek connections that will help people see …

Differently Able: A Review Of Academic Library Websites For People With Disabilities, Mary Cassner, Charlene Maxey-Harris, Toni Anaya

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

This research is based on the Library Services for People with Disabilities Policy, which was approved by the American Library Association in 2001. The policy identified focus areas for libraries including library services, facilities, collections, and assistive technology. Library websites frequently convey this information to users. Our study examined and compared academic library websites for the differently able. What services do academic libraries offer to the differently able? Is there a basic level of services that libraries identify or should offer? Are websites for people with disabilities easily located from the library’s home page?

The earthquake in Haiti prompted significant response from both health care workers and health sciences libraries. Individual libraries in the U.S. and elsewhere struggled to determine the best ways to support relief workers with health information resources and services. This column describes the Haiti earthquake and the response of health care workers, one organization’s experience in delivering services on the frontlines, the response of one library and its struggles to make information resources available, and the Emergency Access Initiative (EAI), an effective solution to offering information resources in times of disaster developed and implemented by the National Library of Medicine …
