The Moving Targets Of Teaching And Technology: Virtual Reference As Information Literacy Intermediary, Melanie Mills, Jennifer Robinson 2013 University of Western Ontario

The Moving Targets Of Teaching And Technology: Virtual Reference As Information Literacy Intermediary, Melanie Mills, Jennifer Robinson

Technology in Education Symposium (TIES)

Libraries have been moving traditional services to the digital environment for some time now; first, with a measure of reluctance and now with enthusiasm (Anderson 2011, 290). But is the act of migrating library services to online platforms, in and of itself, enough? Have we sufficiently addressed the challenges and fully realized the opportunities that technology affords? Using virtual reference as a case study, we will explore the pedagogical role of academic librarians in higher education. In particular, we will attempt to address the following questions: What can virtual reference teach us about our role as teachers? Is it possible …

Access Copyright & Technology: Legal And Policy Issues In Education, Lisa Di Valentino 2013 The University of Western Ontario

Access Copyright & Technology: Legal And Policy Issues In Education, Lisa Di Valentino

FIMS Presentations

Access Copyright is a collective organization representing the
copyright interests of publishers and creators. The collective offers
copyright licences that allow certain limited uses of works in the
collective's repertoire. The use of collective licences as part of
copyright management policy was common in post-secondary education
administration until 2010, when many universities opted out of a
contractual relationship with Access Copyright.

The growing movement towards online open access publishing and
Creative Commons public licensing has made information more widely
available without requiring payment and with fewer restrictions on
use. The addition of education to the list of fair dealing purposes …

Institutional Repositories Supporting Community Engagement: Campus And Community Partnerships At Linfield College, Kathleen Spring, Brenda Devore Marshall

Faculty & Staff Presentations

Building partnerships with community-oriented research centers and departments is one of the best ways to develop an institutional repository into a valued community resource. This presentation examines partnerships with the Linfield Center for the Northwest (LCN) and the Department of Theatre and Communication Arts to demonstrate how Linfield’s institutional repository supports faculty research, student internships, multimedia exhibits, oral histories, and original theatrical productions.

One-Shot Or Embedded? Assessing Different Delivery Timing For Information Resources Relevant To Assignments, Amy S. Van Epps, Megan R. Sapp Nelson 2013 Purdue University

One-Shot Or Embedded? Assessing Different Delivery Timing For Information Resources Relevant To Assignments, Amy S. Van Epps, Megan R. Sapp Nelson

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Objective This study aims to determine if the timing of library in-class presentations make a difference in the type and quality of resources students use for each of four assignments in an introductory speech class. This comparison of content delivery timing contrasts a single, 50-minute lecture early in the semester with four, approximately 12-minute lectures offered just before each assignment.

Methods First-year engineering students taking Fundamentals of Speech Communication provide the study group. Each speech assignment requires students to turn in an outline and list of references. The list of references for each student was given to the …

The Anchor, Volume 126.17: March 6, 2013, Hope College

The Anchor: 2013

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Library Faculty Research

OAPEN-UK is the United Kingdom branch of Open Access Publishing in European Networks, a research project that aims to devise a comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable model for Open Access (OA) publishing in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) that is agreeable to all stakeholders: publishers, authors, readers, librarians, and others. The heart of the project is a pilot involving an experimental group of 29 OA titles paired with the same number of traditional route-to-market books in a control group. Matched as closely as possible by subject, timeliness, price, format, and sales over time, the monographs are made discoverable via MARC …

The Purdue University Libraries’ GIS department is working to advance geospatial services campus wide. In addition to conducting data curation profiles research in an IRB approved manner, we aim to validate new ways and means to make GIS services viable for large and diverse student and faculty community of over 40,000 students, all departments and along interdisciplinary boundaries. Here is a prototype of our mobile dissemination GIS of services and development in collaboration with Aalto University Library. Here, we discuss in a 3-fold manner how the GIS Dept. has prototyped a means of mobile GIS knowledge dissemination towards the development …

Measuring Electronic Resource Availability, Sanjeet Mann

Sanjeet Mann

This is the online, archived version of my presentation given at SCELC Research Day on March 5, 2013 at Loyola Marymount University. The data have been updated to correct errors in the initially reported availability rate. Students and faculty face numerous barriers to accessing their academic library's subscribed electronic resources, ranging from confusing interfaces to misconfigured knowledge bases and missing metadata. These issues consume staff time, waste hard-earned subscription dollars, and erode staff and user confidence in the reliability of library systems. Recently, researchers have begun to use availability studies - a systems research method long used to evaluate library …
