Beyond The Tally Sheet: Communicating Data, 2013 Georgia Institute of Technology - Main Campus
Beyond The Tally Sheet: Communicating Data, Jay Forrest, Raeanne Forrest
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
Ten years ago, the Georgia Tech Library created an electronic Tally Sheet to record transaction statistics. In the last decade, this system has been used by each of our public service departments and has evolved to make recording transactions easier for library staff to use. The system started as a unified single-page sheet with drop-downs to reflect multiple transactions and transaction details to sidebars individualized to each unit with single-click buttons and drop-downs.
Reporting of the transaction statistics has evolved from monthly and annual reports in Excel to a dynamic web-based interface. This data along with attendance data and circulation …

Assessment In Action: Academic Libraries And Student Success, Kara J. Malenfant, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
Academic librarians are connecting with campus partners in novel ways to question and discover how they bring value to their institutions. To foster these partnerships, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), with funding from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, launched “Assessment in Action: Academic Libraries and Student Success” (AiA). This three-year program will to aid 300 postsecondary institutions of all types as they create engaged libraries of the future. Each selected institution has a team with a librarian and at least two people from other campus units. The librarians will participate in a formal 14-month …
Before And After: Planning And Assessment Of New Library Spaces And Services, 2013 North Carolina State University at Raleigh
Before And After: Planning And Assessment Of New Library Spaces And Services, Bertha Chang, Honora Eskridge
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
As academic libraries increasingly focus on user experience as a means of improving spaces, services, and collections, more librarians find themselves conducting studies of varying complexity to provide data supporting decisions. In January 2013, the NCSU Libraries opened a new library building, the James B. Hunt, Jr. Library. With numerous high-tech spaces, the Hunt Library is meant to define the library of the 21st century. For more than two years prior to and in the months since opening the building, subject specialist librarians have conducted studies to learn about user needs, especially those of faculty and graduate students. Faculty were …

Voices In The Library, Frances Maloy, Jon Bodnar, Susan Bailey
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
In early 2012, a team of librarians from Emory University's Robert W Woodruff Library set out to better understand how the library's key user groups work, what they need to do that work, and how the library might better meet those needs. To develop its understanding the team modified the Voice of the Customer FOCUS methodology--a clearly defined and rigorous process for developing and conducting semi-structured interviews and for analyzing the data associated with those interviews.
In this presentation, team members will review their research methodology (including a discussion of its benefits and drawbacks), review their project's findings and its …

Pivot Tables And Data Visualization For The Rookie Analyst, 2013 Georgia State University
Pivot Tables And Data Visualization For The Rookie Analyst, Tricia Clayton
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
Have you heard others wax rhapsodic on the marvels of pivot tables, but you aren’t quite sure what they are or how they can help you? Do you wonder which type of chart or graph is most appropriate for clearly and accurately presenting your findings? If so, then this session is for you.
Assessment has become a ubiquitous component of librarianship, and skilled manipulation of quantitative data is a vital assessment tool. However, many practicing librarians have had little to no formal training in data collection, analysis and presentation. This session is aimed at rookie analysts who are learning to …

Blogging the Library
Have you ever noticed how librarians are stereo-typically portrayed in movies and on TV? There is the perception that librarians are extremely uptight, awkward, and boring, that they require nearly complete silence, and they rarely offer any actual help. That is definitely not what being an academic librarian is about. For me, it’s about helping, learning new ideas, exchanging information, and making the research process (which I love!) a bit easier. Remember the librarians in Matilda or on Arthur? They were always willing to help and make the process of finding resources a little bit easier. That’s what I want …
